The exercises include Contra Costa County Airport Operations, ConFire, Contra Costa County Sheriff, Office of Emergency Services and other mutual aid agencies.

Buchanan Field Airport is the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Logistic Support Area for rotorcraft in the event of major catastrophic events such as earthquakes or fires in the Bay Area.

Cross training with mutual aid agencies helps Buchanan Field Airport prepare for any emergencies that Buchanan Field and the surrounding community may face. Buchanan Field Airport maintains a strong safety record serving a mix of aviation and non-aviation businesses.

Please do not call 911 in regards to these live fire training exercises.

I would be willing to bet that the B17 that just crashed and burned back east is the same B17 that has taken people for rides at Buchanan Field. Seven dead.

Indeed it is.
It’s a sad time for the loved ones of the individuals that happened be aboard that aircraft. The victims were anticipating a ride that they would have remembered for rest of their days.

The loss of the aircraft was also a tragedy.

Terrible and heartbreaking for the families and loved ones of all who perished. I hope and pray for the best possible outcomes for those survivors. I often wanted to be where they all were, flying in that gorgeous machine. I loved to watch and hear it as it flew over our house.

It is the same one. My ex-husband and grandson flew in it as a graduation gift. Very sad

The B17 is part of the Collings Foundation. They tour around the country.

Last year at Buchanan they did the same fire exercise and set the grass on fire on the West side of the airport over by the hangers. I am sure there will be complaints of the black smoke and the Bay Area Air Police will be called.
