The Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s Spare the Air season started Monday, but the district said record-low numbers of cars on the region’s roads due to COVID-19 coronavirus-related shelter-in-place orders have led to good air quality throughout the area.
According to the air district, there has been a reduction in traffic by about 70 percent since the shelter orders initially went into effect in March, and that has led to a resulting drop in various pollutants of 20 percent or more.
During the Spare the Air summer season, the air district will issue alerts when smog, otherwise known as ozone, is forecast to reach unhealthy levels in the region.
Air district executive officer Jack Broadbent said in a news release that the COVID-19 pandemic has shown that “teleworking can be a viable, flexible work option for many that benefits not only our air quality, but employers and employees as well.”
Broadbent said, “As employers create plans to safely reopen their doors and continue operations once shelter-in-place orders are eased, we should not lose sight of the benefits that reducing traffic can bring — teleworking can be part of the solution to keeping our skies blue.”
Stick it Broadbent. You non elected tyrant.
Really Claycord?? Don’t get me started on these guys now
I do all those things before my morning coffee
I would hope that the good people of this area would be sick to death of unelected taxpayer-paid employees playing tyrants and loving every minute of it.
Their illusions of greatness are as overstated as their panic-stricken mandates that tear the Consitution to shreds.
Of course, there are the elected representatives of the people who are inept and egotistical following the advice of political scientists who follow the dictates of the Chinese.
The unelected and politically appointed people who believe in power over the people, such as the Air District, simply state employees attempting to control the people.
Well, the voters have spoken – so they’re all ok with this (creeping) tyranny.
Don’t like it? Then get out there in FORCE and protest instead of lounging behind a keyboard.
Both the keyboard and physical protests are equally important for winning hearts and minds. The most important thing is to inform yourself with your own research and talking with other people before voting. Its hard but being truly informed and shutting them down when they try and in wiggle bs is the only way. It’s gonna take years to reverse the damage but a few lawsuits should get the ball rolling.
An isn’t a coincidence some monitoring stations are next to heavily traveled freeways and all that fine particulate matter from tires and brakes.
Perhaps spare the air days could be eliminated if more people worked from home. Air district could be pioneers in reducing pollution simply by getting state legislature to promote working from home.
@John P
Apparently, it’s you.
It’s time to get serious about protecting every single word of our constitution. Every unelected, non profit, 503c, NGO, quasi government, public/private partnership, agency, department, organization, council, board needs strict oversight by we the people. And I meet real oversight. The kind that makes them accountable. Philanthropy needs to be scrutinized to the fullest degree at all times. It’s nice to hear about rich people giving back, but what do they want from your community? The saying “quid pro quo” has been the big gotcha lately but what about conflict of interest. This is the swamp. Cooking my food on my barbecue is my business. Why would I ever listen or better why do I even have to hear I’m not supposed to something..under threat of penalty. We can’t vote them out but we can demand our representatives tell them we don’t want their services any longer. How much of our tax money do we pay for them to tell us how to live?
According to the BAAQMD 200 page budget, salaries and benefits for their 415 full time employees for 2020 is over $74 million for personnel and benefits. Total expenditures is over $250 million.

well… Today I bought a new GAS LEAF BLOWER!
Get ready for the Gas blowing mongrels to pretend to clean the streets as they blow down the gutters and dirty up the air, stirring up allergies and damaging your lungs during this pandemic!
Mongrels.. honestly, you can be better then that. You don’t like blowers I don’t ether.
Hey! I’M a mongrel.
My landscape guy has actually named his leaf blower “Aunt Barbara”.
With only a few Bay Area residents able to go to actual work, why is the National Socialist Air District still a thing?
Why not? Our ‘green’ power seems to be coming not from wind and solar, but from biomass. Bye bye forests, hello smog.
This is simply Lord Broadbent struggling to look relevant.
He’s not.
You will comply or you will be contained.
With all that we are dealing with right now screw the spare the air baloney.
Just like with recycle bags all of a sudden it is gone.
Wake up citizens. Remove this spare the air propaganda. I am disabled and an asthmatic so don’t even go there.
@johnp I’m not the one who attempted to make a ridiculous joke about people standing up for their rights. You don’t get to shame people because they won’t follow a tyrannical unelected organization who threatens punishment. This is America we follow laws not whims. NOBODY WANTS TO BURN TIRES OR LIGHT CANS OF OIL ON FIRE. That’s you attempting to remove free thought and free speech with asinine comparisons to further an agenda. Shame appears to be the preferred method of subversion at this time. If you had a valid argument, you wouldn’t need to make false equations. Those days are over. Your either an agent working against the people’s rights or your a parrot repeating talking points.
Problem is all the tech giants want their serfs coming to the castle so they can make sure than none of their secret wonders in development don’t escape. 😀
I rat out violators in a hot second and will always do so.
“reduction in traffic by about 70 percent since the shelter orders initially went into effect in March, and that has led to a resulting drop in various pollutants of 20 percent or more.”
ONLY 20%??
Exactly!
Boom..Real Eyes, Realize, Real Lies
Hey that slogan needs to be on t shirts
I love it
May I use it ?
Reading here has completely changed my view of California. I do not have a party but it’s so clear now. In a blue state, you put a spin on everything. Honesty is “negative”. Illegal is “undocumented”. Collective is king. Even now that minority is majority, everything is highly sensitive and you must always cover your verbal tracks, stand up for your criminals, deny your shortcomings — and create sanctuary with everyone else’s money. Call everyone else’s opinion a shame, act more educated and informed despite your schooling, and make all comments personal like a big pansie. Always wondered why people visiting from other states say this one has the strangest people and now it’s clear is the Denmark-ocrats/Hypocrats who prefer to live in sanctuary than reality. Now, as it relates to spare the air, how can you take a pro-action political stance on climate change but want to keep gas leafblowers a booming business to suit your desire to not do yardwork? Get a rake, fakes.
You forgot to mention the moratorium on the death penalty while at the same time soliciting out of state residents for abortions.
Woah man I was just a joking mista..is a pitiful excuse for openly displaying contempt for people who won’t submit through ridicule. You are pushing a narrative that will ultimately be used against you. You can come at me all you want, accuse me of being selfish or “right-wing”. Like I already said your an agent working against people’s rights or a parrot repeating talking points. From your last post I’ll assume anyone who mentions the constitution or freedom is an extreme right winger. Nice attempt to paint people you don’t agree with as extreme. I know the playbook, your mind tricks don’t work here. I’m as independent as they come, but I do respect the constitution. Sorry that triggers you so much
