Once again, aside from (highly restricted) outdoor services, the free exercise of religion has been relegated to the unforeseeable future. Our Bill of Rights places this liberty at the front at of the very first Constitutional amendment. Unfortunately, our state government has moved this all-important American liberty to the end of the line–in fact kicking it out of line altogether. Perhaps California should reconsider whether it intends to continue fashioning itself one of the United States of America.

Martin, you are exactly right.
Some people don’t realize that ALL rights matter.

They want to open the schools first so that the evils of religion can be taught to the children.

The hypocrisy continues in this country with this Political Pandemic. Over 500 people attended George Floyds funeral, including the Minnesota governor all hugging each other and sitting inches apart. The looters and protesters are in groups of 50-100 or more, no social distancing there.
Open your eyes…

Maybe if your institution paid taxes on its amassed wealth Id feel sorry for you?

Im curious if all of these people screaming for freedom to do whatever they want because of theor religion have ever spoken out against Muslims?

Not going to church does not take away from your right to practice your religion. If you NEED a building to worship in then you need to re-evaluate your faith.

Just pack the church as usual and if the authorities object, just inform them it is a “protest”.
AD

Martin, calm down. No one is restricting anyone’s religious freedoms during this pandemic. They never did, and they never will. The Bill of Rights states that the free exercise of religion will not be prohibited. People can follow any religion they please to follow. People pray on their own all the time. Christians pray from home, Muslims celebrated their holiest month from home, and every other religious belief in existence has never stemmed from the need to gather at places of worship. It may be very convenient to have a dedicated place to go to worship, but it has never been a key part of any religion. Telling someone you can’t pray here temporarily is not telling them not to practice their faith, and consequently is not breaking the Bill of Rights. Also quite frankly, your faith should not be seeded in a location, though it should be seeded in your heart and your day to day life.

The government your talking about, HAS failed you and I, but not in the way you are expressing. They failed to take action and left states abandoned to deal with this pandemic themselves. And I must say, Contra Costa County did a spectacular job. They stepped up to the plate when your government left you to die, quite literally.

The members of our County, State, and Country still have all the liberties and rights we had before the pandemic. The only difference is, the few who are not educated on political procedures (such as yourself), are starting to realize how the system is actually set up.

So, as a wise woman named Sarah once said, “Shut up” Martin.

Thanks for your response.
It’s nice to know where you stand..

….”religious belief in existence has never stemmed from the need to gather at places of worship”

Which talking head spewed that insane bit of propaganda?

Ever hear of Stonehenge?
The Pyramids?
The Sistine Chapel?
The canvas Tabernacles constructed by ancient Jews as they wandered the desert?

Religion has ALWAYS stemmed from the need to gather communally.

I really appreciate how the heathens deign to tell the faithful how they must freely exercise their religion.

The Bill of Rights: 1st Amendment

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

I am sure there are already cases pending in Federal District Courts around the nation regarding the Establishment Clause, and exactly what “prohibiting the free exercise there of” means. Not to mention litigation regarding the right to assemble and the Privileges and Immunities Clause (the right of free movement within a state and from state to state).

SCOTUS will be busy defining the Constitution for the foreseeable future.

Restricting or limiting attendance in a building does not actually restrict or limit your right to believe any religion you profess faith in. Attendance to any religion that that requires you to be inside a building of any kind, mashed up against others at the same time, does not seem like it would care all that much about the people who follow that particular version of religious faith during a pandemic.

Jesus said:

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
– Matthew 18:20

In my interpretation, where can be anywhere. I still don’t like what is happening. As @Janus said, SCOTUS will be busy for a while. At this point, this is clearly infringement by the state.

@Justin – Get a clue. The tax-exempt status is to protect churches from government persecution, which enables the free practice of religion.

This whole controlavirus thing is more than some ‘pandemic’, it is the beginning of the end, leading to the ultimate battle between good and evil but good has already won and prevails forever!

@Dorothy:

“Restricting or limiting attendance in a building does not actually restrict or limit your right to believe any religion you profess faith in.”

How is that not “prohibiting the free exercise thereof”?

Some hilarious Constitutional scholarship in this thread from ! It’s okay, guys, you can practice your religion just fine, we’re just going to close this whole “church” thing. We look forward to letting you practice your religion quietly inside your own minds.

In other Constitutional news, the 2nd amendment has been determined to refer to arms, like the arms on your body, so guns are out but the 2nd amendment is intact. You may keep and bear your limbs.

Further, the freedom of the press will be assured in Concerned-ville. Printing presses and internet posting will of course be subject to orders of the local health and safety office. When all dangers of any kind are past, the local offices may allow applications for access to media distribution. But in the meantime all are free to comment on events to themselves within their homes.

this is a rather loose interpretation of the terms “direct response” and “patience” but we’ll take what we can get.

Hair salons, yes. Nail salons, no.
??????????????????????????

CC County Doctoer Kerdorikan has spoken.

you cannot stay 6 feet away at a nail salon and they cut your feet to shreds with instruments. Women should not wear those ugly gel, long witch nails anyway, they are so bad for your health and looks.
If you have foot issues, see a Podiatrist. These people are not trained for that.

Contra Costa has missed out on a ton of money for OUR people. I’ve been to Napa and Solano counties for dinners, shopping and haircuts. I was honored to tip heavily and give those businesses my money. I may even have some new favorites over there.

We drove to Vacaville Friday night to join family members for dinner at an Indian restaurant. Delicious food, excellent company.

It was really telling, I thought, that the traffic heading north across the Benicia bridge was really heavy. It was backed up in many places, 80 E through Fairfield all the way to Vacaville was pretty heavy. It was similar to the Before Times.

“You are not allowed to leave the county.”

Source, please? I’ve read the SIP and I didn’t see this anywhere.

You can’t accuse the supervisors for hurting the local economy, if you’ve been choosing not to participate in it, by driving to other counties out of spite.

You could have gotten take-out food from restaurants in Contra Costa. If you actually did care about the local economy, you would have done so. It seems like you took the anger you have for local officials out on local restaurants. That’s misplaced spite, which only hurts the restaurateurs and their staff.. We also have outdoor dining now. If you are going to make a point to avoid local restaurants and drive out of county to dine out, you’re actively hurting our county’s economy. You’re making it more likely that your local favorite restaurants won’t survive this year.

We have had in-store non-essential shopping since last week. If you are still leaving county to do shopping, you are hurting businesses here for no good reason. Why should our local small business be the target of the anger that you have for the county supervisors?

@Natalie:

“Why should our local small business be the target of the anger that you have for the county supervisors?”

Because unfortunately the sheep in this county won’t vote the idiot supervisors out.

So thousands can protest side by side but I still can’t go play basketball or other minor things. Hmmmmm.

took the words out of my mouth. And Hotels? “Tourism and Individual travel”. Somebody help me. So what else are they for? Conventions and banquets? Not clear on this.

It’s interesting the gyms can open before theaters like the Brenden. With the large spacious seats the Brenden has they’re much safer than a gym

While what you propose is true, closely tied to the freedom of religion provided by the US Constitution and Bill of Rights is the provision for freedom of assembly which is the right being infringed here by the State of California and the SIP directives. The “… right of the people peaceably to assemble …” would appear to ensure people the right to gather to worship long before it would allow for screaming protestors accompanied by rioters and looters creating chaos and mayhem. The key here is “peaceably to assemble.”

The First Amendment to the Constitution reads as follows:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

I hear you, and fully accept that interpretation of right to peaceful assembly. Though I would considering that interpretations may have changed, as the time and era have also changed.

You cannot change the interpretation of “peaceful”, however, you sure are trying, aren’t you?

Do bars fall under indoor dining? Probably regulating 50% capacity, so that means no fun till July??

I glad to see a lot of things opening up.

I sincerely believe that everything should be opened up now without restrictions ordered by any level of government.

If a business wants to maintain restrictions, that’s great.

People must be free to make their own choices without government interference.

Under the Constitution of our Republic, the Government works for the people.

That concept needs to be reinforced the next time we vote for representatives.

By the way.

Could someone please tell the City Council it’s OK to return to Concord now?

They need to take their bows for their superior leadership during this crisis.

Defund the CC Health Department.

hear, hear

Bourbon Highway was jam packed last night, no masks, no social distancing. After all the protests and riots, their argument for lockdown nowmand in the future is over.

What is Bourbon Highway and where are they located?

Pomeroy Bar in WC @ Civic & Main.

Considering that we are already seeing an uptick of new COVID-19 cases in CCC …. 2 weeks after the Memorial Day assembly/vacationing madness…. this new “loosening of regs” would be leading to a third wave of infections beginning in about mid-July.
Each of us has a personal choice to make. Mine is to continue to wear mask and gloves in hopes of not accidentally infecting others.

. Although I agree with you regarding our freedom of religion in this country, I disagree with you that Trump is responsible for all that ills in each state. Governors Newsome, Pritzer(IL), Whitmer(MI), Murphy(NJ), and Cuomo(NY) have not only mismanaged their budgets but in the cases of Cuomo and Murphy have sent Coronavirus patients to Nursing homes thus exacerbating the virus’ spread. In addition I find it funny that a person like Sarah that states a nasty remark instead of stating facts to back her opinion gets her rant removed from C!aycord. Freedom of speech and respect are one thing, intolerance and willfully ignorance are another.

I’m sure that “uptick” couldn’t possibly have anything to do with the increased testing that’s taking place. It has to be the Memorial Day “madness”. In any case, hospitals are no more overwhelmed than they were before Memorial Day and the death toll hasn’t spiked dramatically, if at all.

Obviously, there is going to be some increase in COVID cases when things open up. That’s a trade-off for salvaging what’s left of our economy. I’m willing to take that tiny risk.

,

In that two week period, cases increased by 26%, while testing increased by 38%. Uptick in cases isn’t even close to the increase in testing.

I’m betting that as more things open up that the predicted increase in cases as a result won’t happen. So they’ll want more protests to distract from that. 😉

I WOKE up and finally realized! Do you need to get your prescriptions from the pharmacy, need a haircut, want to gather in groups, have a picnic, swim in the community pool during the current mask/social distancing guidelines??
No problem! Become a protester/looter!!! Duh. You then have all the rights – and more – you used to have as a law abiding citizen. The New Normal.

Great idea Animal. Sorry Socialist leaders of California, I’m protesting floyd so will not be able to abide by your laws

If they cannot arrest the looters, how do you expect the cops to arrest people for not practicing social distancing or wearing masks? Thank goodness our businesses forbid people not to follow the mandates. Our authorities never interfere with people not following the mandated rules anyway.

Nothing makes sense
Health department officials need to be replaced. lets get rid of these clowns, they have been and are abusing their power.

I have to say that I noticed the doctor from CCC whose videos were here seemed a little uncomfortable giving out the edicts. Reading between the lines I suspect he was forced to do so by political interests. Not everything was making sense especially if you’ve had some medical workshops and classes yourself.

I foresee this month will bring a butt load of new cases and a superbug. The date will be changed again and we will have more things taken away and back to house arrest again we go.

Keep the cheery thoughts, Aunt Barbara.

As Donald Sutherland said in the movie “Kelly’s Heroes” “have a little faith baby, have a little faith”.

Have a little faith baby, have a little faith. Donald Sutherland’s quote from the movie “Kelly’s Hero’s with Clint Eastwood.

of course they will play or try to play that card again with this hoax but I don’t know that it will go over very well with a lot of people given the blatantly obvious scope of this ‘pandemic’. I’m sure they’re working on covid 2.0 in a lab somewhere in the world

I saw about an hour ago that Digger’s Diner (a popular burger spot) has tables set up in their parking lot.

At the local W.C. park this morning it was like the pandemic never happened. I counted only three masked per 120 people!

Our leaders have lost credibility.

I boated into a little bar/diner place deep in the delta yesterday and there were about 25 people there (lots of outdoor seating) the only person wearing a mask was the waitress & everybody was having a great time, some were talking about the virus & saying we’ve all been scammed….
Again, not even one customer wearing a mask…. including me.

If you are outside it makes no sense to wear a mask unless it is particularly crowded. And people who exercise in them … that’s nuts. You’re going to pass out from hypoxia and too much CO2.

Pat–
Bourbon Highway a “Comfort” food/bar place in Walnut Creek

It’s far from comfort the next morning….. Good food is not Dudumbs prioirty

Time to let kids play ball.

We’re in church on Sunday, and I don’t see it as discrimination at all. There’s a lot of close contact within the church. Greeters, shaking hands within the congregation, communion, choir, hugs, etc.

Our church will be holding services outdoors, and I’m looking forward to it. A nice cool breeze and plenty of fresh air. We held services outdoors years ago, and we enjoyed it. We’ll return to indoor services eventually. I choose to see the glass “half full.”

Good for your congregation. But if the regulations are harder on churches than other indoor gatherings, they’re unconstitutional and they’ll get struck down. Did you notice that when graduation time came around they allowed for drive-in religious services too. That’s not because it all of a sudden became safe or the CC Health people had a come to Jesus moment. Somebody consulted some legal advice. When gyms open up, they’ll be opening church services indoors again, with the same restrictions they put on other indoor gatherings. Either that, or the county will get some nasty lawyer letters from the DOJ and religious freedom legal defense groups.

What’s with all of these chicken poop opening dates?
What good are we doing by waiting another week or two?
These people have been put through enough grief and loss, quit dicking them and us around and open the flipping state already, this is complete overreaching B.S.

OPEN EVERYTHING……and let people make their own decisions.

You have hurt us enough already, you should be ashamed of yourselves!!!

We are trying to keep the statistics low. We have been given a three month time out and the dang virus has not subsided in anyway. Keep that in mind. Nothing will be the same. We still must practice the social distancing and wear masks. That is reality! We are all frustrated. Don’t blame the local or national pandemic authorities!! Relax and try to be thankful you are well. They are expecting another spike around October too. It is too bad, but the truthfulness of this reality will not disappear no matter how upset you are.

I wish they would open the economy up already, and let people take their own risks. The people who are most worried about getting the virus should self-quarantine.
