Contra Costa County today updated its health order about when and where members of the public should wear face coverings during the COVID-19 pandemic to align it with current state guidance.
The updated order specifies face coverings should be worn in businesses and in areas where people wait in line to enter businesses, and everyone should wear a mask or face covering whenever they are within six feet of another person who is not a member of their household, except in very limited, industry-specific situations.
People who have certain health conditions are exempt from wearing masks that fit snugly over the mouth and nose but must instead wear plastic face shields with cloth draping beneath to contain coughs and sneezes.
The order also requires businesses that are open during the pandemic to ensure their workers and volunteers wear face coverings, and to not serve or allow entry to anyone not wearing face coverings.
“The violation of any provision of this Order constitutes an imminent threat and menace to public health, constitutes a public nuisance, and is punishable by fine, imprisonment, or both,” according to the health department.

However, this order is NOT valid until it is signed. The order shown is not signed, only a typed name. Anyone can create that, so until I see a signature on it (Contra Costa Health does not have one showing a signature) … I can argue against it.

Wow, what a staggering feat of logical thinking – clearly you have more thoroughly adjudicated the efficacy of mask wearing on population-level spread of covid-19 than have public health experts and institutions.
Mask wearing is not a binary switch of risk on/risk off. The greater then percentage of the population that wears them (properly), the more the spread of the virus can be impeded.

Yes, actually, it is. When you’re claustrophobic and suffer from anxiety and generally don’t like anything on your head/face. There are reasons other than “I’m not doing it because the government said I have to”.
Personally, I think those objecting are objecting more because the government is literally in our faces with this mask thing and because so many health officials supported the protests in early June. The constant contradictions are tiring and confusing. They also make government look capricious and arbitrary. Add to that the general murkiness of data being provided, it doesn’t take much to become suspicious and once suspicion level is reached, there’s nothing that can be said without people pissing on it.

Seeing as how the spike in cases came suspiciously after the George Floyd incident, we’re in this situation because of a lot of bellyaching, ignorant people who felt the need to ignore large gatherings and protest. If the shoe fits, wear it!

However, just a little research shows the opposite picture: The virus is in retreat. Look at what happens when you include the volume of testing data with the number of positives being found.
Now, what jumps out is how few positives are seen with the rapidly increasing volume of testing that has been done. The data even include contact tracing that should show an increase the positive rate. Still, the positive volume remains relatively flat compared to the number of tests performed.
The media are engaged in fraud by selective data reporting to incite panic for political gain.
Incompetent government critics who have long used insufficient testing as their rallying cry against Trump are finally getting the testing they asked for, only to use selective bits of it to stoke more fear. Clearly they can’t be trusted.
It is long past time for state and federal leaders to tell us the complete story and end the lockdowns. We can’t let the cure be worse than the disease, especially when the disease is already repidly going away.

How do I know? Let me tell ya!! Recently I went to pick up pizza at our very own local Little Caesar’s on Clayton Rd in the Treat shopping center. I will say, I was beyond frustrated when I entered the establishment and 3 out of 4 of the employees were not wearing masks!! ( at least not properly- like they were hanging around their necks like a scarf or necklace) even the owner!! When I kindly brought it to his attention— he snidely laughed me off and went on about his business.
I am DEFINITELY NO Karen, but I was a little upset. After thinking on it a few days I decided to make a report to their corporate office and follow up with the health department. Much to my dismay… are you all ready for this one?!?! The words out of the health department workers mouth was— we are not fining or following up on said complaints. I was told, it was not a health department issue and I would need to file a report with the police?? Really?!?!
So, not that I am condoning those who desire to not wear a mask, but we do VERY much live in a free country that we do have rights in. Karen lives matter! Anyone actually named Karen must feel very discrimated against. 2020 will be the year to remember that anyone named Karen was thrown under the bus and backed over a few times. Its time to stick up for Karen with lots of “Karen lives Matter” graffiti, I mean murals.
You are a Karen. Whether or not someone wears a mask at work is between the boss and his/her employees. If you don’t feel safe at this business, don’t do business with them. Of course it’s a good idea to wear a mask properly, and it’s also a good idea to respect boundaries, mind your own business and do business with a business you feel comfortable with. You’re not only a Karen, you’re a whiner.
I don’t wear a mask all day (working at home) but I understand that it must be very difficult to do so, especially if you have breathing issues. I’ve been in businesses since the county shutdown where masks weren’t worn or not worn properly, and I cut the employee some slack. You have to, if you’re a reasonable person. Grow up.
What Kentucky Derby said. If you don’t feel safe in a particular establishment, don’t patronize it. It’s not like you can’t live without Little Ceasar’s pizza. Reporting them is a bit over-the-top.
@Just sharing – The SF Chronicle had an article recently on COVID-19 rules for restaurants and enforcement. To say that enforcement is a hodge podge mess in the Bay Area is a severe understatement. In some counties, the County Health Dept is responsible for inspection and enforcement, although all such depts (as I best recall) said they were not issuing citations at that time, but rather emphasizing proper procedures and compliance.
In CoCo County, the article said that the County Health Dept does not classify COVID-19 as a foodborne virus, so it does not inspect or enforced COVID-19 rules in restaurants. The article said such enforcement, and responding to complaints, is the responsibility of law enforcement. Don’t know if this has changed since the article was published, but I’m not surprised you got the response from CoCo County Health that you did.

If the management and staff of a business are putting the general public at risk then this should be investigated to verify it’s true and then reported publicly. Maybe Claycord could do something like the Dirty Dining reports.
Anti-maskers are free to continuing to patronize the business. Others likely would prefer to take their business elsewhere.

It is irritating then that a heath department is creating and changing rules but leaves the dirty work of understanding, implementing, and enforcing them to others. I can see why many sheriffs and others are pushing back.
I can’t help but notice the comparison of the society of total equality in Kurt Vonnegut’s short story “Harrison Bergeron” and how the pandemic is being handled. Instead of just quarantining those at risk who test positive (as some countries do) they are making everyone suffer at the same level. This is why some of us suspect the pandemic is a scheme to distract from the economic crisis which the virus didn’t create but was in the works for years.

I agree with you. First of all for all those objecting to wearing a mask, there are not many place around here you can shop if you don’t. The grocery stores, even most the small convenient store have signs, that you need to wear a mask. I work at Macy’s Sun Valley, both the mall and the store require a mask, I have not had any complaint from customers, and we are told my management that we have the right to politely ask someone to put on a mask if they are not wearing one.
Even in a free country there are limits to freedom, we don’t drive 100 miles an hour, or go through red lights, at least most of us don’t, and if we do and get caught we get ticketed.
