Wildfire smoke from the Glass Fire in Napa County and expected smog has prompted the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to extend its Spare the Air Alert through today.
Air district officials said that smoke from the Glass Fire that broke out Sunday morning will have consequences for the North Bay. In addition, smoke combined with high inland temperatures and vehicle exhaust is
expected to cause unhealthy smog accumulation in the Bay Area, mainly in the South and East Bay.
The alert means it is illegal for Bay Area residents and businesses to burn wood or manufactured firelogs in fireplaces, woodstoves and inserts, pellet stoves, outdoor fire pits, or any other wood burning devices.
During a Spare the Air Alert, outdoor exercise should take place only in the early morning, when smog levels are lower. When smoke reaches unhealthy levels, residents should stay inside if possible with windows and
doors closed until it subsides, if temperatures allow. When it’s too hot, residents are urged to visit an air-cooling center or other building that provides filtered air.

There is no excuse for these fires. We do not fight them correctly. By the time the first fire truck got to the Glass fire it had already consumed 20 acres. We need more fire lookout stations and we need a fleet of 747 tanker airplanes. If five 747s had taken off the same time the call came in they would have knock the fire down to where trucks could have put it out. This Glass fire will cost an easy billion dollars so we can afford the airplanes. This fire I am betting was started by an arsonists. It is not global warming causing these fires.
Nobody is saying that global warming caused the Glass Fire. There was no lightening, so it could not have been started by the weather. It was a man-made fire. It could have been arson, it could have been faulty power equipment, or an errant spark from some other man-made source.However, climate change is making fires worse because weather conditions are getting drier and California is getting more high wind events.
California needs to make a major investment into fire monitoring, and fire fighting personnel and equipment. In 2013, scientists at UC Berkeley proposed using a satellite to detect fires when they are small. Used in conjunction with drones, firefighters could be sent to stop fires before they get big. The state also needs to train and hire more fire fighters, as well as set up more fire-stations. The government and the tech industry need to figure this all out, or the entire state of California will be unsuitable for human habitation.
Natalie unfortunately you are incorrect even our governor is blaming this on global warming or climate change or whatever it is called today. I have lived in California for over seventy years and we are no drier now than seventy years ago and I don’t care what bias statistics say. We have wet years and not so wet years and that has been going on forever. Weather does not start fires. Lightning and man start fires. That includes PG&E. We have always had wind incidents, ever hear of the Santa Ana’s or the Diablo winds? We need the aircraft not more firefighters.

@Ash. Ok, I didn’t know he had said that. He’s definitely wrong to say that the fire was caused by climate change, because the ignition wasn’t caused by weather. There were no lightening strikes this weekend. This fire was either caused intentionally or unintentionally by a man-made source.

We have one cable news station that is somewhat conservative and every other station local or national is liberal. On top of that our newspapers are liberal. Couple that with people who can’t think rationally and that’s where we are at.
Anyone think these fires are just clearing ground for giant solar farms and wind turbines everywhere so we can have electric powered cars in 2035 in CA. I’m not a conspiracy theorist, just putting it out there. Who knows, Gabbin’ might have thought this all up during a 3 or 4 day coke binge.
There would be no reason to burn the state to the ground to put up solar panels and wind turbines. There’s plenty of open space to have these already. Much of the fire is grassland and chaparral, which wouldn’t need to be cleared by fire to put up solar and wind infrastructure..
