Dogs are once again allowed off leash in designated areas of East Bay Regional Park District parks, the district said Wednesday.
Park officials required all dogs to be on a leash in March when the coronavirus pandemic began in an effort to prevent crowds and potentially unsafe interactions between park visitors.
As of Friday, the district’s leash rules have returned to their pre-pandemic state. According to the district, dog walkers account for 39 percent of park users, second only to hikers.
“The restrictions have helped keep parks and trails open and safe,” parks district General Manager Robert Doyle said. “Regional parks, now more than ever, play an important role in maintaining mental health and
providing places where people and their pets can exercise in a safe, socially distant manner.”
Dog owners must keep their pets in view and under control when they are off leash and dogs must be placed back on a leash when they threaten, harass or chase other dogs, wildlife and park visitors.

You really want to start an argument over this? Go review the statistics. 90% of dog bites are inflicted by small, so called “harmless” dogs. The difference is that larger dogs do more damage, so they get a bad rep.

I agree Anon. Pitbulls have been bred to have aggressive traits and their lockjaw makes them particularly dangerous for anyone unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end of their anger. They’ll act sweet and family friendly at first, but the moment someone accidentally steps on their tail they’ll lunge for the nearest child.

Once again dogs are free to roam the parks, biting kids and other hikers. Just waiting for all the delusional dog lovers to chime in and claim this is not the case.
First of all, dog bites on the trails are pretty rare. Second, dog owners are still responsible for their dogs, whether on or off-leash.
Dogs should always be leashed. And I have dogs; I am just not one of those delusional folks who thinks dogs are people too.
For those dog owners that don’t understand:
NOT EVERYONE LOVES DOGS nor do they want your dog in their face or coming toward them. How many of you use “Oh, he’s tame”. “Oh he won’t hurt you”. ???? Well, how is it that people walking in a park are suppose to know that your Fido won’t be a problem?
Leash laws are there for a reason. 1. to allow the owner to control the dog. 2. To keep the animal safe from potential attacks. 3. To allow others to feel safe in a PUBLIC setting.
Please don’t assume everyone loves your animal. Show people you love your animal enough to keep it safe. LEASH YOUR DOG

Not a fan of no leash, especially around little tots.
But how are dogs suppose to get a decent butt sniff of another dog with a mask on?….anyone?
What those off lead enthusiasts don’t understand is that the leash may end up protecting their dog. Especially if it attacks mine who is always on lead.
Any dog breed that has the capacity of being able to kill a person or another dog should be on a leash. I have seen owners with their leashed dogs out in public barely able to control them. These are the same people willing to risk your safety by taking their dogs off a leash. Who comes up with these laws? I have Yorkies who are always on a leash so I can protect them from other dogs. Our laws have made it so the aggressive and dangerous run free.
