Portions of the Bay Area may have their power shutoff Wednesday by PG&E as forecasted hot, dry and windy conditions are raising the risk of wildfires in the region and elsewhere, PG&E officials said Monday.
About 50,000 customers in 21 counties in the state may be affected by the shutoff. In the Bay Area and elsewhere initial notifications were sent Monday to those who may be affected.
Bay Area customers who are most likely to be affected are in the North Bay mountains near Mt. St. Helena, small areas in the East Bay near Mt. Diablo, the Oakland Hills east of Piedmont, elevated terrain around the Calaveras Reservoir east of Milpitas and parts of the Big Sur and Santa Cruz mountains.
PG&E shuts off power to areas where the conditions for a wildfire are ripe because recently its equipment has failed and started massive blazes that have killed dozens of people in California.
As recently as last week, Cal Fire took possession of some PG&E equipment as part of an investigation into the cause of the Zogg Fire in Shasta County, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Friday by the utility.
Four people died in the Zogg Fire and more than 56,000 acres burned, Cal Fire officials said.
The forecasted windy conditions, which are prompting the potential power shutoff, are expected to subside Thursday morning in some places and Friday morning in others.
PG&E crews will be aiming to restore power to all customers within 12 daylight hours after the winds die down.
In the nine-county Bay Area, the shutoff is expected to affect about 23,000 customers, PG&E officials said. Unaffected counties in the region include just San Francisco and Marin.
Another 1,100 in Monterey County and 1,700 in Santa Cruz County may be affected as well.

At least when Pat Brown was governor, utility system was reliable and well maintained. Then that idiot kid of his and his liberal politician friends proceeded to destroy this state.
You can see from space one of Pat’s legacy the California aqueduct, his dumb kid could only manage part of a toy train set sitting out in middle of nowhere.
If time travel ever becomes a reality, some one, PLEASE !,
go back and give Pat a condom.
Funny Original G. I will call Doc Brown and get the time machine ready !
Ash-why make everything political?? Just to get the name of your choice on a post??
It’s difficult not to get political when California is so poorly run.
Cab, thank you!
@C
sticking ones head in the sand won’t address the problems in this state.
“why make everything political?” – i would say why not keep my fellow voters, especially the low/no information ones thinking about who is running this state into the ground. maybe then we can have a rationally run state rather than one where the power isn’t reliable. where those who have power seek to build yet more homes which will put more of a strain on the power grid. lastly due to the so called green policies of this states administration we can’t keep the lights on at night on hot evening because we can only use power generation technologies that rely on wind and solar. Oh and to add to that all new homes will not have have natural gas so even yet more demands on the grid that is going to be over taxed in 2035 when gas cars cannot be sold in this state.

?Better?
So glad I’m leaving California.
What’s with all the name calling ? This has nothing to do with biden. Kamala. Or the Democrats!!! Such nasty immature comments. Are you adults ?!!?!! Unbelievable b
Yes it does, it’s the Democrats’ fault.
I must agree. I’ve long been dismayed by the name calling, and childish vandalism to names of people that posters apparently dislike. It displays the posters’ education and mindset, especially when the poster has nothing substantial to say.
Back in the 80’s “Blog’s” were called “Bulletin Boards” (BBS’s) and Moderators were called Sysops (System Operators). BBS’s usually had rules for use after their Banners, asking users to be kind to each other and also avoid implied profanities. Rules were enforced.
When I joined Claycord.com many years ago, I swore to myself that I would never resort to name-calling.
Cab, if you grew up behind the iron curtain, like me, you would know a bit about the meaning of power outages. As a matter of fact, if you like socialism, you will throughly enjoy long lines at the gas stations, empty store shelves and extended power outages. Just think back to a few months ago, Bay Area, California, USA.
You have no idea what you are talking about. The type of socialism you supposedly came from is a lot different than the Democratic Socialism many countries have been enjoying. All the Dems want are their tax dollars to go to improving the quality of American lifes, there can still be capitalism, it may be a slightly different view of capitalism but it will still exist, stop fear mongering and spewing B.S. PG&E has passed on major updates for decades because they are a for profit company, they know that billions in upgrades will hurt their profits. I used to work on towers and PG&E passed up an upgrade almost 15 years ago to add tower sensors that will shut lines down in the case of a line break, these sensors could have stopped the Camp fire in 2018 before it started, all for a bit more profit. Community owned utilities like in Sacramento don’t need rolling blackouts and are considerably cheaper because they are not focused on profits over service.
Good to know.
But yes, it invites political comment, obviously. It’s not a law of nature that public utilities are poorly maintained, tht forest management has been so bad that we have gazillions of tons of dry fuel. It’s all part of the pattern: public services in CA suck, and are, all too often, only functional for their employees, not for the citizens of the state. It doesn’t have to be this way. But it is.
About 60% of the forests in California are Federal land.
Where has the Trump Administration been for the last 3 1/2 years on that maintenance?
Rob, … Enviro groups file lawsuits as does CA attorney general who recently celebrated filing his 100th lawsuit against federal government.
@Rob
Thwarted by the Democrats and their environmentalist buddies.
Just like nearly everything this Administration has attempted to do for us.
The people who have been calling Trump a dictator are the first to complain when the President doesn’t act like a dictator.
@ROB
California sued to stop the feds from maintaining federal lands, xavier our AG who replaced kalama, told them to stay off it and we’ll take care of it, so NO it is the dems who failed to maintain the land and are responsible for the fires not the feds or global warming (lies).
In your lifetime, how many days has your power been turned off by PG&E?
No one have an answer?
Okay, here is mine. No days.
I have no complaints with PG&E.
@JJ
ok, here is an answer, more than zero which is too many.
Thank God the PG&E isn’t run by the Government or else there might be problems with power being shutdown and maintencne not being done which leads to wildfires that cost taxpayers massive amounts of money.
@R
don’t forget paying bonuses then declaring bankruptcy
Don’t worry PG&E, you keep murdering people and we’ll pay for it and put up with power outages!
Does anyone know if this will effect the scheduled outage I have for December 1… when I finally move out of this sham of a state.
.
All this push for “green energy” and CA can’t even keep its lights on.
.
Pathetic.
.
On that Zogg fire, 27 structures have been damaged, 204 structures destroyed, and four person have lost their lives.

Hey Gavin! here’s your real GREEN tech dumba$$
A team of physicists in New York has discovered a material that conducts electricity with perfect efficiency at room temperature — a long-sought scientific milestone. The hydrogen, carbon and sulfur compound operates as a superconductor at up to 59 degrees Fahrenheit, the team reported today in Nature. That’s more than 50 degrees hotter than the previous high-temperature superconductivity record set last year.

imagine no line loss over the 1000s of miles of transmission lines.
Get On It Never Going To Be President Newsom!
So I guess when Greasy Gavins100% electric car mandate goes into effect, we just won’t go to work when the decide to turn out power off!
