State Sen. Scott Wiener on Thursday announced he’s planning on reintroducing legislation to legalize safe injection sites when the state Legislature reconvenes in December.
Wiener has long been an advocate for the sites, which allow drug users to safely consume in the presence of medical professionals who are equipped with the medication naloxone to prevent overdoses.
Back in 2018, Wiener’s initial legislation pushing for safe injection sites, Assembly Bill 186, was vetoed by then-Gov. Jerry Brown.
After that, Wiener introduced AB 362 earlier this year, but that too has been canned.
“We have a huge problem here in San Francisco and elsewhere with substance use disorder and with people who are overdosing, and all too often dying. We know that overdose deaths have been going up here in San Francisco.
This is a public health crisis,” Wiener said, speaking at Boeddeker Park in the city’s Tenderloin neighborhood.
“We need to treat drug use as the public health issue that it is, not a criminal issue. And we need to stop using the criminal justice system as a way of somehow addressing addiction in our community,” he said.
“When you have people who you know and love who struggle with addiction, the thing that you want most for them is you want a better life for them, you want them to be able to get help, you want to make sure addiction doesn’t take their life. And that’s happened to me,” said Mayor London Breed, referring to her sister who died from an overdose.
“We can’t control people and their addiction, but what we can do is be there for them. And this is a way for being there for people. This is a way for providing a space that doesn’t judge them, so that when they walk through the doors, they’re not treated like a drug addict. They’re treated like a human being,” Breed said.
Overdose deaths have been on the rise in the city in recent years, with 222 reported in 2017, 259 in 2018 and 441 in 2019, according to data from the city’s Department of Public Health. The rise has been linked to the use of the opioid drug fentanyl, although methamphetamine or a combination of both have also been linked to overdose deaths.
In other parts of the world, more than 100 safe injection sites have already been implemented, such as Europe and Canada, and have been shown to prevent overdose deaths, reduce the spread of diseases like hepatitis C and HIV, and help get users into treatment.
“Overdose deaths in our city rose 70 percent in 2019, and unfortunately all signs point to this trend continuing in 2020,” said city Public Health Director Grant Colfax. “Lives will be saved with safe injection sites, also known as safe consumption sites in San Francisco.”
Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf has also been an advocate for implementing safe injection sites in her city.
In a statement, she said, “These sites can help people who suffer from drug addiction get on a path of health, as well as manage the impacts our entire community experiences when we allow drug illness to go untreated.”
Can we get rid of this idiot. First he makes it legal for a HIV positive person to have sex with out telling there partner, then he pushes the new law making it ok for adults to have sex with under age kids as long as it’s within a 10 year age difference. Weiner is a degenerate. Safe injection sites are anything but, there is no such thing as a “safe” way to use Fentanyl outside of a medical setting.
We already have safe injection sites, and they haven’t worked. Free needle exchanges, and they haven’t worked either. Time to switch up the approach, and rid government of activists disguised as serious people interested in solving problems.
The counter argument is we are feeding horrible addictions that ruin lives. I can see injecting centers that are centered on weaning the poor souls off the chemicals that have taken their minds. Just giving them the “feel good” deadly poisons is like herding the homeless into high wall camps away from everybody but not saving or improving society for the long term.

Several Scandinavian countries already do this and it works perfectly. It saves money because less police called for OD(therefore freeing them and EMTs up for other things) Cause less visits to the emergency room, again freeing up beds and saves tons of money and prevents needles and other drug paraphenalia from littering streets.
And typically safe injection sits have trained staff to help transistion off drugs if they want.
But people here just want to kill drug addicts, so they dont care.

In reality death rate from drug overdoses in CA is comparable to that of Sweden (12.8/100,000 vs 10.1/100,000). And you have to remember that Sweden does have safe injection sites and doesn’t have a land border with Mexico, through which heroin flows freely.
And in some states with very harsh drug policies, like Nebraska, death rate from overdoses is even lower, and very much comparable to that of Norway and Denmark (7.4/100,000 vs 7.6/100,000 and 5.7/100,000, respectively). Norway distributes something like 2 million syringes/year to its drug users. Any guesses how many syringes Nebraska distributes?
Now, West Virginia, Delaware, New Hampshire, etc. are another and very sad story. But last I checked, Wiener wasn’t talking about them, was he?
As for, “typically safe injection sites have trained staff to help transition off drugs” – that’s BS as well. Canadian study running for over 20 years showed no difference in long-term mortality of injection drug users with or without injection sites. Other outcomes are similarly unaffected. What does matter is the age at which people start using IV drugs and whether they have stable relationship, either with the family or with a significant other.
And now to the last part about people who just want to kill drug addicts. Sadly, drug addicts are quite successful at doing this themselves. What people here really want is a policy that does help users to kick the habit and not drag them from overdose to overdose. There is no proof that safe injection sites are such a policy.

I get why people want to do this – if we are already spending tons of public money and time on responding to ODs, you can see the appeal of having things on site.
But, this also creates a zone of permanent relapse temptation for anybody trying to get clean. You start to do better but your pals are all hanging out at the open air drug market … It’s not just about current users, it’s about people who fall into it because it a ‘safw zone’ like this exists.

Coming from a family of Alcoholic’s and Heroin users looking for a place to use is not their problem.
The left makes cloaks free needle/safe injection sites in economic and compassion rhetoric. They will tell you that it is cheaper to give needles to addicts in a supervised environment. They say that the OD rate goes down and the supervising staff can promote healthier lifestyles. The economic argument is somewhat true (a few needles are cheaper than full blown re-hab and there are lower costs due to reduced police/EMT calls). But the long term cost is MUCH greater.
What I can’t stand is the “compassion” part. What is compassionate about making it easier for an addict to slowly commit suicide? Is it compassionate to give a shaky drunk a drink to get over his DTs? Is it compassionate to give a 500 lb person another slice of pie? Is it compassionate to give a horny child molester unfettered access to a child?
No, it is not.

Oakland was a beautiful, safe, and pleasant city in the early 1970s. It has sunk into a graffiti-covered trash heap, most notably since Quan and Schaaf were voted into office as Mayors. Quan now runs a marijuana outfit of some kind, so what does that tell you. I’ve never met anyone even remotely connected in any way to marijuana that cared a rat sass about anything. And, Schaaf is such an airhead she thinks Oakland is just hunky dory as she has governed it.
