Governor Gavin Newsom this week announced he has granted 22 pardons, 13 commutations and four medical reprieves.
The California Constitution gives the Governor the authority to grant executive clemency in the form of a pardon, commutation or reprieve. A clemency grant recognizes a person’s subsequent efforts in self-development or the existence of a medical exigency.
A pardon may remove counterproductive barriers to employment and public service, restore civic rights and responsibilities and prevent unjust collateral consequences of conviction, such as deportation and permanent family separation. A pardon does not expunge or erase a conviction.
A commutation modifies a sentence, often allowing an inmate to go before the Board of Parole Hearings for a hearing at which Parole Commissioners determine whether the individual is suitable for release from prison.
A reprieve allows individuals classified by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation as high medical risk to serve their sentences in appropriate alternative placements in the community, consistent with public health and public safety.
While in office, Governor Newsom has granted a total of 63 pardons, 78 commutations and four reprieves.

Doesn’t our governor have more important things to be doing like reopening our state!!!! I guess not, he is spending his time pardoning convicted murderers, attempted murderers, keeping many of them from deportation so they can see their families. What about the families of those they killed? Anything that happens to CA at the hands of Gov. Newsom is well-deserved as we suffer at the hands of the man we put there by our votes. I hope we learn our lesson and either recall him or vote him out in two years.
Take a look around at what happened here locally during this election cycle, he will be voted in again no matter how we vote…

I don’t think he will be voted in again. In my neighborhood alone, we have one house out of ~20 that supports his actions. My extended family on both sides cannot stand that sad excuse of the male species. I will vote for your cat or dog to take position of governor before I vote for Newsom.
Maybe you are in the minority and support his abuse of powers during this polidemic, his pardons for illegal aliens and the cesspool he allowed SF and now California to fall into. But, I think you are in the minority.

From my comments you pulled out that I support Newsom? I look at people like the county rep voted back in but look at our roads and homeless issue just to start. BART a complete stain and again the board voted back in. I didn’t vote for any of these people and don’t know of a person who did but yet they were voted back in to continue their agenda…he will be voted back in. I am 52 and this state has been blue for decades. I just don’t get it, people scream complain but here we go again…it’s quite depressing

My apologies on saying you support Newsom. I see too many people who do on these forums, so I made an assumption when you stated he would be voted back in.
We are not far apart in age but to be honest, I never really paid attention (BIG MISTAKE) to local politics till a few years ago.

I agree. Newsom is doing what is most attractive to the far left and this probably increases his reputation. Many thought Kamala was hated throughout the US except here and was finished. Don’t be surprised if four years from now Joe drops out cause of age and Newsom is on the Democrat presidential ticket somewhere.

This is something that maybe you should learn people’s stories before you judge. These pardons are not just given out for free. The pardons are earned. They work so hard to get these pardons and they are not given away for free. It also takes many years once the pardon process is even started then once the pardon process is started it’s another few years before it’s finally granted. During this process the person is working as many jobs as they can at very low wages to keep their head above water, while getting caught up on child support etc, state debt, etc. So please don’t be so quick to judge – you don’t know the miles that were walked and trials that were overcome to get to this point.

I had a roommate in college that was a nice guy, everybody liked him. After college we went our separate ways and I never heard from him again. Imagine my shock when 20 later I read in the news that he was just released from prison for committing lewd and lascivious acts with minor children. He was also convicted as a violent sexual predator. What? I asked myself, he was such a nice guy, everybody liked him. Well, they let him out thinking that after 20 years of treatment at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville he should be good to go. One week after his release I read in the news that he was once again arrested and sent back to prison. The charge? Lewd and lascivious acts on a minor.
But he was such a nice guy and everybody liked him.
Thank you Dictator Newsom for helping these remorseful murderers, attempted murderes and robbers. Can you please send them to live with your number one crush and fan @Ilovepopcorn’s neighborhood? 10 of the 22 pardons were for illegal immigrants who committed felonies. The only reason for the pardon is interfere with deportation proceedings.

I despise Newsom, but pardon powers are there for a reason. Some of these cases seem more reasonable than others – e.g., Violet Henderson has been in prison since she was 18, in 1974 – for conspiracy to commit a crime. I don’t know what the planned crime was, but that’s a long time. Seems reasonable. Whereas the dude who got two 25 year sentences and is going to be let out after 20 … I mean, what is the point of sentencing if it doesn’t actually mean anything?
First count Californias vote. Then audit and recount the vote by hand.

I read these missives from Newsom. They aren’t that bad. A few of them agree to be deported. No one seems to be really getting off the hook. Not everything the knucklehead does is bad.

With the exception of possession of marijuana (the sentence was probation) I don’t agree with any of these pardons. Do the crime, do the time. and have it stay on your record for life. If you can’t get a job, you should have though of that beforehand.

Crime victims are given a life sentence NO ONE can free them from. Many crime victims suffer from mental health problems as a result, some of them commit suicide. There is a similarity to Trump, pardons before exiting office in the last days. The key difference is Newsom thinks can easily be reelected, handling of Covid drug Trump down, could do the same for Newsom.

He is angry about losing in court over abuse of power. While that was a good thing, now he obviously intends to do as many destructive things as possible until he is recalled or voted out. He clearly despises the middle class.

That’s not a complete list. He also let one of the young men who murdered my brother go free. He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison with no chance of a parole. We were guaranteed he’d never be released. We could of gone for the death penalty (we had special circumstances on him) but opted to go for life without parole.
