For the time being, the scarcity of COVID-19 vaccination doses throughout the San Francisco Bay Area has led health officials in eight jurisdictions to urge all health systems to prioritize shots for patients aged 65 and older because of the virus’ high mortality rate within that group.
County health departments and collaborating health care partners are coordinating efforts to streamline vaccine distribution and administration, moving as quickly as possible to provide shots to the most vulnerable residents.
Marin, Napa, Santa Cruz, and Solano counties are prioritizing residents age 75 and older. Similarly, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties are prioritizing people age 65 and older. This is in addition to continuing vaccine Phase 1A-eligible health care workers, many of whom are now expecting their second doses.
Across the region, most COVID-19 deaths have been in the 65-and-up age group. In Contra Costa, 82% of COVID-19 deaths have been in the 65-and-up age group.
“While we are still in the midst of a severe winter COVID surge, one of our best ways to prevent further deaths is to vaccinate those at greatest risk of dying from COVID, our senior citizens,” said Dr. Chris Farnitano, health officer for Contra Costa County.
The Bay Area continues to receive only a small fraction of the vaccines needed to vaccinate residents aged 65 and older. Across the Bay Area, weekly dose allocations from the State of California – based on a formula designed to ensure fair distribution statewide – have slowed compared to shipments in December and early January. With the current pace of supply, it will take several weeks to offer a first dose to all older adults who would like to be vaccinated.
Limited vaccine supply is resulting in a widespread inability to make new appointments, and in some cases, can lead to cancellations of existing appointments. In addition, administering Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccine requires a parallel effort to provide a second dose a few weeks after the first. The need for second doses limits the number of people who can be newly vaccinated each week.
Well it’s about time. But you might want to let Kaiser know that they need to stop vaccinating their non-essential employees that work from home now and for the future (not doctors and nurses) because they have not even started to call those that are 85+ with health issues. They are still on their non-essential employees. It completely unacceptable and i keep hoping they get exposed for their shady practices. There is protocol to follow and Kaiser is having a difficult time understanding that a stay at home employee that answers patient complaints is not essential. Get your act together Kaiser. Put your vulnerable members first and follow protocol.

RN Absolutely they don’t call and they don’t allow you to make an appointment online. Believe me I have folks in their 80’s and Kaiser Walnut Creek is still vaccinating their staff. You can’t get to a screen to make an appointment (even at 87 with health conditions).. Don’t bother emailing your Doctor because they will forward you their BS form letter. Had to go thru the county because Kaiser does not give a hoot about their most vulnerable. You cannot call Kaiser WC and get an appointment even if you are 80 plus. That is pretty disappointing. And I know first hand that they are giving it to staff that works from home.
Amazing!!!! Kaiser finally opened up for those older than 85 not sure if that includes anyone younger. I have been trying consistently and finally went elsewhere. I checked again this evening for a family member that is 87 and to my surprise they qualified and offered it.
Then why are my 85 year old parents getting nothing but the runaround? Nonsense
It seems that they put more effort in telling stories about the vaccine than they do making and distributing it.
Why would Contra Costa County prioritize 65 year olds when they do not have enough vaccine to accommodate the 75 year olds requesting an appointment?

What is with the unfair distribution of the vaccines to the different areas?? I know someone who traveled to Sac County to get a vaccine because her nieces place of work (a hospital) had more than they needed and told them to contact family members 65 and over, make appointments to use it up. How come those vaccines were not distributed to other places in need?
