The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors appointed Alison McKee as the next County Librarian.

McKee has been with the Contra Costa County Library since 2002 and was appointed as interim county librarian in October. She previously served as deputy county librarian and has held positions including library assistant, librarian and senior community library manager in her tenure.

“I am honored to serve this county and its many diverse communities,” McKee said. “I know the public misses coming into our libraries and I pledge to continue to work hard to navigate the Library through these challenging times so that we can welcome our library patrons back inside as soon as possible.”

McKee will receive annual compensation of $281,442.

its a brave new world at the county library
or not brave if you choose otherwise or to not do anything errr or even talk or mime or

How much should the position earn then?

Congratulations! I love the county library system! I wish you well in your new position!

anon – really. The So deals with very little. It’s city PD’s that deal with what you are talking about. The SO staffs 2 jail, plays rent-a-cop to places like Lafayette and drives up and down Hwy 4. Oh and sits in the parking lot of the Ace Hardware on Pacheco Blvd having their chit chat chew club.
They have the most bloated budget in the county

Probably includes benefits but still a lot of money.

did they quiz her on how racism is a public health crisis?

what a joke the leaders of the county are

What a joke…

Wow. I guess late fees really add up.

Our taxes help support the libraries as well as private donations. I have used the public libraries and enjoy what they have to offer. I’m disappointed they closed the buildings to the public. Yeah, you can still check a book out, but its not the same. The staff must really enjoy the peace and quiet especially not dealing with all the homelessness and idiots who are so challenged they can not turn the cellphones off. I guess it will be about another two weeks when we will flatten the curve of COVID and be allowed back into something we pay to use.

Thank you for enlightening the community on the many attributes and qualities of Alison McKee. We need a voice of intellect and reason amid the fray, especially when one who has worked so tirelessly to benefit the community (our families, our friends, our children) is so readily thrown under the bus.

To report on her “earnings” without any context, in that this is not her actual pay, but inclusive of all benefits, retirement, etc., provides a false narrative.

There are those among us that make our communities a better place. Alison McKee is one of them. Not all heroes wear capes.

Salary, health coverage, dental and vision coverage, retirement benefits, vacation days, holidays, and any other perks of the employment agreement (auto, gas reimbursement, gym membership, etc.) are routinely considered part of the compensation package.

The entire compensation package is regularly used for purposes of comparison when examining employment arrangements. For government employment, the information is public knowledge. It is clearly a consideration and the public is entitled to the information to make informed decisions. I can’t imagine why anyone would think this information was controversial.

Gittyup – I might also help if it was explained that County employees pay a portion of their medical (the formula is no longer a clear split) and retirement (based on age of entry & projected years of service). People think it is all “free” which it is not and never has been on the county level.

Thank you Theyellowranger for explaining detail to those that don’t want to know it or can’t understand it. I have for years tried to educate those on Claycord but……You will find out some can’t be educated.

And yes over the past couple of year Claycord has had misleading headlines. I think they would rather stir the pot that explain details,

Of course this figure includes health benefits and retirement. Anyone that understands “annual compensation” knows this. It’s not a “false narrative.” If you don’t understand how compensation works the lack of knowledge is your fault, not Claycord.com. If it was her salary only, it would say annual salary.

I’m sure a lot of the posters here (the ones who work, anyway) would be amazed how much it actually costs their employers to employ them. Spoiler: There are a ton of expenses your employer has to pay in addition to your salary.

To the folks pointing out they knew that the figure was a function of total compensation:

My comment isn’t really speaking to that subject, it’s more pointing out that there seems to be a undercurrent of bitter people around here that feel like no one should make over 100k a year in a public position. This is obviously ridiculous given the cost of living in this area along with the size of the job and responsibility. My point is find a CEO type position in this area with 300 employees and see if they make less than that. It’s really unrealistic to think that 100k is some holy grail that is never deserved. Contra Costa County already pays far less than equivalent positions in neighboring counties as well as the public sector. The board of supervisors have recently admitted this by siting this fact as justification of their latest raise, while leaving the employees out.

Further, I site lazy reporting as this report simply copy/pastes 2 paragraphs and a compensation amount. I assert that this was done knowing the cadre of septuagenarian grumps on this site would be triggered. See the comments from our regular haters as written above.

Again, we are lucky to have our County Librarian. Does that mean all county employee are wonderful? Of course not. But to say that we pay them too much is an under informed position.

That has been the pattern. And if you ever suggest higher taxes for the super rich these SAME people get really bent out of shape.

You’re the only person who was “triggered.” Relax. If you don’t like the way an article is written, don’t read it. If you know her and want an article written about her, create one and send it to her. No one cares.

@ Yellowranger,
Reread the comments, the only one that would truly count as “hateful” is yours… Was there more to say about this announcement?

@Theyellowranger
No, not shame on the Mayor, as he clearly wrote “annual compensation”. HUGE difference between salary and compensation. Learn the difference before shaming someone.
