The state’s Department of Water Resources conducted a manual snow survey at Phillips Station in the Sierra Nevada on Wednesday and results indicate that snowpack is below average despite the recent winter storms that struck the Bay Area.
The survey, the second one of the season, recorded 63 inches of snow depth, which is equivalent to 17 inches of snow water. Those results represent 93 percent average for the location.
Statewide, DWR stations’ measurements indicate California’s snowpack snow water equivalent is 12.5 inches, representing 70 percent of the average for the early February time of year.
“The recent blast of winter weather was a welcome sight, but it was not enough to offset this winter’s dry start,” said DWR Director Karla Nemeth. “While there is still a chance we will see additional storms in the coming weeks, the department and other state agencies are preparing for the potential for a second consecutive year of dry conditions.”

93% doesn’t seem that bad to me. However depending on snowfall which could be a problem some years when we have a whole ocean on our border seems really dumb. At least spend big bucks to develop the best and least expensive way to it. Don’t wait until it doesn’t snow one year
It’s like the summer wildfires. No one is coming up with a better plan to fight fires. It is like they want to use emergencies to keep us on our toes. I gave the governor’s people a plan to stop fires immediately before they get large and burn for weeks. It would cost a couple hundred million but still cheaper than fires but they don’t listen. Panic is their way of life.

“… 93 percent average for the location.” What is wrong with this? This sounds like great news! Maybe we should keep track of how much water is released from California lakes by our local government.
A rather useless set of data. A snowpack measurement equivalent of 12.5 inches is 70% of average. Average over how many years? What is the median?
Does the loss of industry from California mean we can manage this apparent reduction in water?
If we stopped siphoning so much of our fresh water to animal agriculture and their feed crops, we’d have more water left over for the PEOPLE to drink and use and crops that PEOPLE directly eat.
I think its preposterous that the water district and state water big wings will tell us to curb OUR water use habits (yard irrigation, teeth brushing,etc) but big agro gets to use as much as they damn well please. And we pay for it, one way or another.
