Catalytic converter thefts are on the rise in Concord, according to the Concord Police Department.
Police say it doesn’t take long for people involved in these crimes to jack up a car and steal the catalytic converter.
It can happen in a matter of seconds, and as you can see in the trunk of the vehicle, the suspects were already able to steal several catalytic converters.

That’s a pretty revealing video. Lot’s of info for the PD to use for investigation. I am sure not every catalytic converter thief wears his pants halfway down to his knees. Also good description of the getaway vehicle.
I couldn’t find anyone to recycle my single converter. Wonder who is accepting these in bulk?

Unfortunately, there are people who will buy them without asking too many questions, because the price of palladium has increased so much in the past year. Search online for “we buy catalytic converters”, and there are websites out of state that will take them.
Some thieves will go so far as to sell them outside the country to buyers who aren’t going to contact US authorities if something doesn’t seem right.
These are organized theft rings, which have front people to run fake businesses to launder the converters, and establish connections with buyers who don’t ask questions.
Theft rings even have their front people sell the stuff on Ebay. If you search for scrap catalytic converters, or search for used catalytic converters, there are lots of listings.
My exhausted OEM cat was worth $100 and I had to pay $40 to ship the trimmed can out of state. I hope that low life driving stolen converters across the country enjoys his/her low margin life on the road.
I harped on this 10 years ago…..if there’s no market = less thefts.

This is not difficult to resolve, if you don’t have a place to sell them, you don’t have a market for stealing them. Do sting operation on the recycling centers buying them.

@Rasonable This is untrue. Big5 sells slingshots/wrist rockets at their Pleasant Hill and Concord stores. And as far as I can tell, Amazon has no restrictions shipping them to California. At the state level, they are not included in the list of prohibited weapons. So. they’re good to go.

Yeap, my brother just had his stolen off his Prius in Concrd. Car is older and they did such extensive damage to the car that it wasn’t even worth fixing. Really sad as he doesn’t make much money and had just finished paying off the car.
First they rip off your converter. Then you get ripped off again by the state of California by having to use CA approved converters. The price to have them replaced in this state compared to other states is ridiculous and there is no real difference in them. If they don’t work your car doesn’t pass.

My bet is they are going to Mexico. You would think metal scrapers around here would be watched. That border is so unwatched they only catch a fraction of what goes back and forth. If I was in charge nothing or nobody would cross the border without being examined.
My cousin lives in San Rafael and told me about 3 “youths” from Oakland were busted stealing these from cars and then rammed a police car. The two males were booked into jail and immediately released on cashless bail, however, the female driver who rammed the police car had to spend the weekend in jail.
I worked at a shop in Lafayette someone came thru offering money for any old Catalytic converters. Pris we worked on replacing the Cats more then any other vehicle.
Looks like the same car that *TRIED* to get my wife’s cat….but I had rivoted a cat shield in place about 6 months back.
Got them on camera, looks like the same black BMW rolled up to my driveway, asshat #1 got out of passenger rear passenger seat and checked underneath the prius, only to find a large plate covering his quest for money.
He jumped right back in the car and they moved onto my neighbors 10 houses down and got what they were seeking.
They seem to enjoy the 3-5am hours of the night, same as their dirtbag cousins who check my mailbox bi-weekly. And NO, I’m not going to get a locking mailbox, I would rather get more video…..I’m waiting on my sub mini IP camera from china that will go INSIDE the mailbox to get face pictures.
