The Contra Costa County Library is offering help for people with library cards but no internet access.
Library patrons can now check out WiFi hotspots, allowing free internet for those studying or working remotely.
The portable hotspots connect WiFi-enabled devices such as laptops, tablets and smartphones to the internet. One hotspot can connect up to 10 devices at once and works almost anywhere in the continental United States.
“Due to the pandemic, many people in our communities need access to the internet more than ever,” said county librarian Alison McKee. “Reliable internet service will help with work, school, and with staying connected to friends and family members they can’t see right now.”
Hotspots are available for checkout at ccc.lib.org, or by calling any library in the Contra Costa system. Borrowers must have cards and be in good standing with the library.
Lending periods are 21 days and renewable if there’s no waitlist. Hotspots come with a case, instructions and a charging cord. One kit is available at a time. The library also offers printing and scanning service at various locations.
Libraries are currently closed due to the pandemic, but front-door service is available at 24 county branches, except Pinole and Ygnacio Valley. People can go to https://ccclib.org/ to make reservations and schedule a pick-up or call (800) 984-4636.
Wireless internet is available at all library buildings. Access is available in some library parking lots and other outside areas around libraries.

Again should mention that lots of people send perfectly usable laptops and desktops to recycling simply because they don’t know how to shred the hard drive. Shredding is a method of overwriting the drive 10 or more times so any data on it is not recoverable. There is software for that. Then just put something like Linux Mint on it. Linux has a reputation for being geeky maybe along side the buggy Windows 10 but not so much macOS anymore since it is running on top of UNIX. Apps like Zoom are browser based so will run on Linux just fine.

They won’t get anything off computers I take to recycle. I take the hard drive out, smash it with a sledge hammer and trash it. Also remove all the memory cards and break those also. It is easier to wipe it clean but I enjoy the destruction process.☺
Couldn’t have said it better. I do the same. But, also smash the keyboard (and rip off the keys) and break the screen, hammer tooth picks through the usb and power ports. Bust the hinges.
I used to do computer maintenance at government installations. One Defense Contractor wanted us to move a computer system for them. Before we could move it, they reformatted all of their drives with a destructive format, then overwrote the drives with all zeroes and then ones. Then they opened the drives, and ground the platters down to bare metal. Finally, they ran the platters through a crusher, and we were free to move the system.
One can always get a new hard drive and put it into an old computer (as long as it’s not too old).
you are out of touch…there are homeless students trying to do online school. Out of work homeless trying to increase their education in this downtime employment (I personally know some doing that aggressively right now).
