But if privately owned companies are making these decisions, what do you want done about it?

Companies have been making careful decisions about their archives for years. A few years back, Warner Bros made the decision to no longer air a small handful of cartoons that featured racist depictions of Inuit and Japanese people. Disney famously stopped showing the Song of the South in theaters as it, among other things, had Uncle Remus suggest the South was better off during the days of slavery.
These decisions were made long before cancel culture was a thing.

Many wars were started by victim mentality. Victim mentality only hurts the perceived victimized. When I coached children years ago especially in soccer some teams we played tried intimidation as a game plan. I always told the team do not react to anything they say or do. Do not try to get even.You are playing a game and you must concentrate on what you are playing to succeed. Do not allow yourself to be distracted. Todays perceived victims would be wise to follow that advice.
Back to soccer. We played one very aggressive team from Millbrae CA. They had a young coach who encouraged his team to be intimidating. Throughout the game they insulted my best player and others but the team followed my advice and we won. After the game my best player went up to the main antagonist punched him in the mouth with a mighty blow. Every adult on the field started lecturing the boy except me because I knew what he put up with for the whole game and I never covered what should happen after the game. On top of that the kid deserved it. Basically get on with your life and don’t get bogged down with distractions. Dr Seuss will still be around long after the woke are gone.

The decision by the publishing company mainly bothers me because of the REASON they gave for withdrawing “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas”.
They said it was because “the town only had white people in it”.
But it is a matter of FACT that many, many towns in very cold climates really DO only have white people living in them….. just because no one else cared to settle there!
“The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” isn’t on the list of the 6 books that are being withdrawn from publishing. It’s 6 of the lesser known, lesser read titles that have been pulled.
I am not sure where you read that but The Grinch is not one of the books that will no longer be published.

Dear Democrats: I have in my bookcase a history book covering 1865 to 1920 and published in the early 1920s, used by a family member as a new college textbook, and it has some fun information on race. It is the sort of thing that you would love to grab and burn. No, you can’t have it. You can edit and rewrite Wikipedia, censor children’s books, and take over mass media, but you can’t have everything. Go grind your teeth on that one. The book 1984 was not meant to be an instruction manual.
Nobody is advocating for breaking into people’s homes to take people’s books.
I would be willing to bet that the textbook you speak of hasn’t been in print for years, perhaps even decades. That’s what happens to books when the ideas in them fall out of favor. It’s a normal part of the process of cultural change.
The textbook you speak of is for adults, who can critically parse the ideas in the book as being outdated. Adults can look at old ideas on race theory and understand how those ideas are misguided. Chldren’s books are made for a younger audience who might lack those more advanced critical skills.

Something to the effect, “If you see people that look like you portrayed in a derogatory manner you start to think you don’t matter.” I give children more intelligence than to equate their value in life based on a few negative stereotypes. Certainly, they see enough of others who look like them on a daily basis who are normal, well-adjusted individuals in order to form a more realistic view of who they are. To deny them the experience of anything negative in life is completely unrealistic and harmful. Sooner or later they are going to have one of those negative experiences and it will be made all the more traumatic because they have not had the opportunity to learn how to manage it successfully. This sort of overprotection is nothing short of child abuse.
So you would feel comfortable illustrating Africans and Chinese people in the way that they are depicted in If I Ran the Zoo? You could see yourself drawing them that way?

Companies have been making careful decisions about their archives for years. A few years back, Warner Bros made the decision to no longer air a small handful of cartoons that featured racist depictions of Inuit and Japanese people. Disney famously stopped showing the Song of the South in theaters as it, among other things, had Uncle Remus suggest the South was better off during the days of slavery.
These decisions were made long before cancel culture was a thing.

Many wars were started by victim mentality. Victim mentality only hurts the perceived victimized. When I coached children years ago especially in soccer some teams we played tried intimidation as a game plan. I always told the team do not react to anything they say or do. Do not try to get even.You are playing a game and you must concentrate on what you are playing to succeed. Do not allow yourself to be distracted. Todays perceived victims would be wise to follow that advice.
Back to soccer. We played one very aggressive team from Millbrae CA. They had a young coach who encouraged his team to be intimidating. Throughout the game they insulted my best player and others but the team followed my advice and we won. After the game my best player went up to the main antagonist punched him in the mouth with a mighty blow. Every adult on the field started lecturing the boy except me because I knew what he put up with for the whole game and I never covered what should happen after the game. On top of that the kid deserved it. Basically get on with your life and don’t get bogged down with distractions. Dr Seuss will still be around long after the woke are gone.

The decision by the publishing company mainly bothers me because of the REASON they gave for withdrawing “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas”.
They said it was because “the town only had white people in it”.
But it is a matter of FACT that many, many towns in very cold climates really DO only have white people living in them….. just because no one else cared to settle there!
“The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” isn’t on the list of the 6 books that are being withdrawn from publishing. It’s 6 of the lesser known, lesser read titles that have been pulled.

Dear Democrats: I have in my bookcase a history book covering 1865 to 1920 and published in the early 1920s, used by a family member as a new college textbook, and it has some fun information on race. It is the sort of thing that you would love to grab and burn. No, you can’t have it. You can edit and rewrite Wikipedia, censor children’s books, and take over mass media, but you can’t have everything. Go grind your teeth on that one. The book 1984 was not meant to be an instruction manual.
Nobody is advocating for breaking into people’s homes to take people’s books.
I would be willing to bet that the textbook you speak of hasn’t been in print for years, perhaps even decades. That’s what happens to books when the ideas in them fall out of favor. It’s a normal part of the process of cultural change.
The textbook you speak of is for adults, who can critically parse the ideas in the book as being outdated. Adults can look at old ideas on race theory and understand how those ideas are misguided. Chldren’s books are made for a younger audience who might lack those more advanced critical skills.
While we are on a roll here cancelling potato toys and Muppets we should cancel some 80’s music too. Some titles come to mind…

The Muppets weren’t cancelled. The shows, cartoons and films are still available to view. Only 2 episodes of the original Muppet Show were pulled. 1 was because of a legal issue regarding music rights. The other was because the guest of the episode is a criminal, so they disassociated him from the show by pulling the episode.

The rationalization given for this as stated in the video by the learned Dr. Martin is completely idiotic. Something to the effect, “If you see people that look like you portrayed in a derogatory manner you start to think you don’t matter.” I give children more intelligence than to equate their value in life based on a few negative stereotypes. Certainly, they see enough of others who look like them on a daily basis who are normal, well-adjusted individuals in order to form a more realistic view of who they are. To deny them the experience of anything negative in life is completely unrealistic and harmful. Sooner or later they are going to have one of those negative experiences and it will be made all the more traumatic because they have not had the opportunity to learn how to manage it successfully. This sort of overprotection is nothing short of child abuse.
So you would feel comfortable illustrating Africans and Chinese people in the way that they are depicted in If I Ran the Zoo? You could see yourself drawing them that way?
