Contra Costa County COVID-19 data as of Friday March 5, 2021.
All information is from the Contra Costa County Health Dept.:
- Total cases (since March) – 63,142
- Recovered cases – 61,093
- Deaths – 701
- Total active confirmed cases – 1,348
- Nursing home deaths – 302
- 7 active outbreaks in nursing homes
Contra Costa County COVID-19 Hospital Data:
- Patients currently hospitalized – 67
- Occupied ICU beds – 124
- Available ICU beds – 42
The State will move Contra Costa County to the “Red Tier” once the following three criteria have been met for two consecutive weeks:
- Case Rate: Less than 7 new cases per 100,000 residents – (currently 10.5)
- Positivity Rate: Less than 8% of tests countywide are positive – (currently 3.1%)
- Equity Metric: Less than 8% of tests for residents of the lowest quartile of the Healthy Places Index census tracts are positive – (currently 4.9%)
K-6 School Reopening:
Contra Costa County is currently in the Purple Tier. Schools may not reopen for grades 7-12 while in the Purple Tier. K-6 school may reopen for in-person instruction in the Purple Tier if the adjusted case rate has been less than 25 per 100,000 population (currently 8.9) per day for at least 5 consecutive days (schools can now reopen) and the school has an approved COVID Safety Plan. Local school officials will decide whether and when to reopen once these criteria are met.
Bingo! The Healthy Places Index census tracts are positive – (currently 4.9%)…we’ve reached the last component of the equation to move into Red. <5%..this was discussed in the 3/2 Board of Supervisors meeting.

@Bill~They are changing the ‘goal posts’ again…at the 3/2 Health Department update to the Board of Supervisors:
Farnitano said, aside from the state possibly changing the current thresholds, the county could also move from purple to red by what the state calls a “health equity accelerated progression metric.” If the county’s hardest-hit areas move to less than five daily new reported cases per 100,000 rate of daily infections, the county could move into the red, even if overall numbers still exceed seven.
I know, it’s all nonsensical and why have tiers at this point…

The testing/100K residents metric also has to be met for two consecutive weeks and it runs on a 7 day lag. They are currently reporting numbers for 2/24 8.9% adjusted. The first day the county dashboard is projected to be below 7% is on March 3. It will either be 3/16 or 3/23 based on those metrics.
The other thing to consider is the 40% vaccination allocation to the Healthy Places index. Once there have been 2 million does administered statewide we would also be dropped to the red tier. The state expects that to occur within 1-2 weeks.
Note that the Bay Area only had a total of 10 zip codes in the Healthy Places Index that qualified with a single zip code in Contra Costa (Richmond). The rest went to Los Angeles area and the Central Valley.

Huh. I managed to get a vaccine at a mobile clinic in a “healthy places” clinic because a worker at the mobile clinic contacted me when they had a no show. I drove 18 miles each way to get the vaccine. Otherwise, I’d still be waiting. I’m in Tier 1B. I have resisted with the county for an appointment over three weeks ago, but I live in the wrong zip code.
