The Mt. Diablo Education Association (MDEA Union) released a talking points memo for teachers to read at the upcoming school board meeting on Wednesday.
The memo says reopening too soon would be “hazardous,” and forcing people to work in a hazardous environment would be “immoral.”
They also claim the “shock of this announcement has caused unnecessary stress and confusion.”

A HUGE THANK YOU to Parent on the comment. That is exactly correct and I appreciate that. Teachers are trying their best to do what’s right for the students and their families. Please stop the negative post.
Doing the right thing would be returning to work, like every other one else has, without demanding special treatment and an endless, increasingly unrealistic set of demands. Teachers refuse to go to work, all while getting preferential vaccine dosages over the elderly or the immunocompromised. The teachers are clearly happy to laugh about not doing their jobs, all while collecting a check, growing increasingly fat and happy while doing ever less work.
This post is literally just a document the union distributed. If that is bashing it is the union’s own fault.
Teachers are NOT doing the right thing unless they are telling their union to back down and have folks return to work full time. Anything else is utter hogwash.
Teachers should report back to their worksites like the other 1000’s of district employees had to do last year. The office staff, custodians, maintenance workers, district office staff have all been working together the entire time. Why are they any different than a teacher in a classroom that gets cleaned daily? Someone please explain to me how being a teacher gives you more rights than any other employee of the district.
And don’t get me started on how “underpaid” they are…since when is making 75-100K+ per year not a living wage? And I’m positive you know your salary when you sign up for a job.
If kids failing is working hard then I don’t want to see the results of those not working hard. The teachers are the unions in case you weren’t aware of that.

Claycord didn’t say anything about the teachers or the union, let alone bash the union. It simply reported what the union asked its members to say at the School Board meeting. How is that “bashing the union”? The union doesn’t need to be bashed – it bashes itself really well all on its own.

Parent, as I mentioned a few days ago, when I asked an 11th grader when the Middle Ages were in Europe, they guessed the 1700s. So, these teachers you are supporting are graduating kids who think the US revolution with muskets and Thomas Jefferson and George Washington and all was going on at the same time as the Middle Ages in Europe with feudal warlords and serfs and King Arthur. Its great that the two never got together cause knights on horses and jousting poles would not have done well against a lineup of George Washington’s militia.

@Parent: as someone else said, the union is doing an awesome job of bashing themselves right now. Many teachers have worked hard and been very flexible. Lord knows it has not been easy for any of them. However, school districts all around us are going back in some way: Martinez, San Ramon, Lafayette, Orinda, Dublin, Brentwood, Berkeley to name a few (not to mention all of the private schools). Thankfully teachers are getting vaccinated pretty quickly. With that vaccination comes a responsibility to start getting our students back to in-person learning. This memo shows that the union appears to be much more focused on obstruction than on actual negotiations.
The teachers should be angry at their union and the massive PR nightmare they are creating. Students leaving this district in droves. Parents so furious and frustrated by the endless delays and the union’s unwillingness to follow the same damn science that other districts are following. Don’t they realize how badly they are alienating parents? Do they think these parents don’t vote? I have always been an ally to teachers and I want to keep doing that. But its getting harder to do that as I watch my kids struggle for a year, with no end in sight. We have watched friends go back to private school and be fine. We are now starting to watch friends return to public schools. MDUSD kids just getting left to rot at this point and parents are simply not going to stand for it any longer. The union should care about that! The district has a very safe and modest plan to get kids back, even a tiny bit, and the union looks terrible for opposing it. They think they are going to win the battle but they will lose the war. If they keep this strategy going, it will result in layoffs and closures as people flee this district. If someone opened a handful of new charter schools right now, or offered school vouchers, the MDUSD would be decimated overnight. And a lot of really great, dedicated, talented educators will be lost as well, due to this unions short-sighted leadership. Teachers-talk some sense into your union here! Please!
If you’ve watched a city council meeting or board of supervisors, you know prepared scripts are common from interest groups. They’re easily distinguished from callers who are unscripted. Sometimes even the average, independent citizen will have a script just to make their points without forgetting something. If you’re worrying about this being underhanded and subversive it’s not. That said, get back to in-person teaching! If you’re a teacher and willing to wear a mask to grocery shop, then you can teach in-person.

Claycord reported facts. Some on here have interpreted those facts as an attack on teachers. To me, that says more about the reader than the reporter.
The union does not speak for all teachers. Teachers are forced to join the union, but many of them do not like union politics. These teachers are least likely to speak out.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have Coronavirus fatigue. My boss has had us all in the office since May last year with proper protocols (masks, social distancing, etc.), and not one of us has gotten it. The current system is not sustainable for much longer, as more and more of the population either gets vaccinates, refuses the vaccine, and/or refuses to be governed into submission.
In conclusion: let’s be safe, but not fearmongers.

I must agree that the use of the term moral is a bit odd in the context of a state institution, but please understand that MDEA is truly an organization of hardworking teachers who know each other personally and professionally, and have experienced the district not following through with promises and commitments for years.
The “unnecessary confusion” really lies in the fact that reopening has been proposed since October, and there is still no plan. Don’t worry, we will move to the hybrid model. We just need the district to offer an actual plan that can work.

Couple of items to consider:
Teachers can be vaccinated, I see several 100’s open slots for tomorrow.
CDC says you din’t need a mask if gathering with other vaccinated adults and children and even with others not vaccinated if not high risk.
Vaccinated people cannot spread Covid because load is too low.
CDC guidance for school distancing being lowered to 3 feet.
Bottom line is the union stance is ALL untrue. Follow the science they say unless the science doesn’t fit the agenda.
In the meantime Berkeley opened grade schools full time 5 days a week.
I keep hearing that MSUSD is a BIG district, trustees said it, the super said it, MDEA said it, those words will come back to huant them when this is over!

I am in the teachers union and YES teachers are working very hard during distance learning. HOWEVER the union itself is extremely political and does NOT speak for everyone who is part of it! I am revoking my membership at the end of this year because I have been so disgusted at the way teachers unions have been disregarding the science/evidence based studies. The fear mongering in recent months has been an embarrassment to the profession.

Hello my name is___________. I am the parent of a student at _________ school.
Please approve a schedule for reopening regardless of a MDEA bargaining agreement. MDEA has demonstrated that they do not have the student’s best interests in mind.
1. Not reopening schools is detrimental to student learning outcomes. Continuing to delay the reopening of schools when it has been proven that schools can reopen safely is immoral. (Add one brief supporting detail.)
2. Set a good example for our students. When your supervisor, teacher etc, asks you to do your job, you do it. Your unwillingness to do what you are paid to do should be against the law. You are a public employee earning a salary paid by taxpayers. (Add one brief supporting detail.)
3. I don’t trust MDEA to make decisions on behalf of the students in our community. They have demonstrated that educational inequities are meaningless to them. (Add one brief supporting detail.)

Hazardous? Working in a hospital is hazardous. Kids spreading the virus to adults is very very low, so “they” say. Yeah maybe these teachers are working harder but this is what they are choosing. If it’s easier to be in a classroom then open up our schools! It truly amazes me how no one seems to care how this is affecting our kids and what this will mean for when they finally get to go back to school full time.
They say, pick one bullet point. I choose 1,2,3,& 4. Stand firm. When it is safe, the schools can reopen w full support of staff.

Honestly, how much real-world evidence can people ignore, and for how long? Schools are open all over the place. Data pouring in from across the country. Teachers are getting vaccinated. One thing that’s going to bite teachers in the ass thanks to their over zealous union leaders: they will get no community support whatsoever for the next round of salary negotiations. None. The union bosses have cooked the teacher goose for years to come.

2nd, This is the exact method used by marxists to silence speech and pressure media outlets into not publishing anything that goes against the official narrative. There are many things about the union’s behavior this past year that are just beyond parody. But this has to be the worst: lobby for vaccine priority, succeed, get vaccinated, and … still stonewall about coming back in person.

As per usual, the comments section is rife with misinformation. Allow me to clarify:
1. This script is outrageous and makes anyone who uses it sounds like a zealot, and doesn’t really come from a facts first standpoint. I cannot imagine using the word “immoral” to convince the board to wait until there is an agreement in place. I hate that the Union put out such a misguided post out there, and I hate that someone in the union felt the need to share it with Claycord, a site rife with people clawing to disparage the hard-working teachers of our community. Most teachers are frustrated with the union AND the district because it seems like they have been going in circles for almost a year.
2. There is currently no agreed upon health and safety protocol. There are “suggestions,” and there have been “preparations” made, but there is no guarantee for teachers, staff, and students that keeps them safe and holds the district accountable. If you have been on any of the school campuses prior to the pandemic, you might know that basic needs were not being met, and if there is no guarantee that soap or sanitizer will be available at ALL TIMES, there is no holding the district accountable. I cannot tell you how many times I have said, “there’s no soap in the restroom” and the response is, “we’re out campus-wide.” That was unacceptable pre-pandemic. It’s just plain dangerous now.
3. The district is attempting to require ALL staff to return on March 17. I was lucky enough to get my first dose of the Pfizer vaccine last week. My 2nd dose is scheduled for April 4. This means that I will be considered “fully vaccinated” by April 16, one day short of a month after they suggest I return. This seems inappropriate, and if you know anything about the money promised from the governor for schools that return prior to April 1st, you should recognize that the dates selected for teachers and students to return are NOT inconsequential. It’s a money grab that they most likely will not go accounted for, similar to much of the CARES money.
4 I, like many other teachers and staff, am at high risk for complications of Covid. I have requested accommodations because of this (formal request was made in August 2020, meeting with Risk Management was September of 2020). There has been no agreement made for anyone who has requested accommodations. The district has made it clear that children of parents who wish to keep their children in distance learning for their safety will be guaranteed that this school year as well as into 2021-2022. Why are they not willing to do the same for staff? Being 100% honest, I never saw myself as an online educator, but I also never saw myself putting myself at risk of death because of my choice to be an educator. I recognize that many followers of Claycord think that there is no risk in teaching, and that there’s limited evidence of spread among children, but I teach high school. There is far higher risk among teenagers, and I’m not comfortable returning when the district doesn’t even know how/when/where/with whom students will attend. I think asking for clear guidelines and parameters isn’t asking too much.
5. MDEA has been attempting to reach an agreement with the district for a LONG time. Despite having an MOU in place that clearly states that there must be an agreement in place regarding health and safety protocols PRIOR to returning to school, the superintendent released a statement claiming that the return date for all staff members would be March 17. This is not only ill-advised, but goes against fair labor practices, making it illegal. The way the union and the district have handled negotiations has been a disappointment to most.
6. Do not equate the teachers not burning their union cards and protesting as a sign of approval or complacency. A lot of this is bigger than we are. A lot of this is out of our hands. What would you have of me? Should I go and open my classroom and hold class in spite of the regulations? People are claiming I should protest my union… as disappointed that I am with my union’s current negotiations, I do not want to eliminate the protections to my job provided by the union. In a community like this where some members are champing at the bit to find any fault with educators and get them fired, I’m lucky to have the protections to my job afforded to me by the union. I know many followers of this site equate a union with socialism and that there is some sort of democratic conspiracy led by the members of the CTA (lol), and to you I say, THIS IS WHY WE HAVE A UNION. (Also, THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS).
7. I’m proud of my colleagues who have been working the hardest they’ve ever worked in their lives. The ones who teach to a brick wall of students names because the parents do not encourage their kids to have their cameras on and teachers cannot require it for class. The ones who cry after they sign off because their tech didn’t work, or their students didn’t seem to understand, or because they just want to hug a kid who told you they were having a bad day. Sure, there might be some teachers out there who have dropped the ball, but that’s the same as in person, as well as in EVERY PROFESSION EVER. Sometimes people don’t do a great job. Do not equate the ones who don’t do well with all the ones who are genuinely trying everything they can to help the kids they care about succeed.

What a fine person you are, Thank goodness you aren’t a doctor, a nurse, a cop, or a paramedic, tasked with doing your job every day despite the risks. Heck, thank goodness you don’t stock shelves at the grocery store or deliver mail, because I’m sure those jobs would be too scary for you as well.
I hope you feel good about taking two vaccine doses from people who are actually out in the front lines while you sit at home and collect your paycheck.
@attempted : I hear you, and I am not unsympathetic to you. I do not like the “teachers are so lazy” comments. I know this has been a terrible year for teachers.
I also know that: my kids are suffering greatly. I have to deal with almost daily meltdowns for months on end. The screen addiction is a constant battle. There is frustration, anger, tears, bitter hatred of distance learning, camera battles. The isolation has affected them deeply. And people say “kids are resilient “ but damn, we have been asking them to be resilient for a year. And it’s too much now. It’s too much.
There is no zero risk return to school for any staff. With all due respect to you, I cannot watch my kids fall apart after a year, see them suffer deep emotional effects from schools being closed. This is why I think people are so angry. There has never been a lower risk time than now to start on the path to reopening. I am very appreciative of teachers and I care about them, I really do. But i hand to put my kids first now, because no one else will.
@Attempted, There’s a “heads I win tails you lose” dynamic here. There’s no plan that will hold the district accountable, you say. What do you mean by that? It appears you mean there is no *agreed-upon* plan that has passed through collective bargaining. Exactly. That’s what everybody is outraged about: the union has refused to agree to anything and has used that leverage to delay and delay and delay.
I feel for anyone who is at higher risk who is asked to work in person. That includes some of my colleagues as well, and it is understandable that they are worried about it. But the union supposedly representing you didn’t even come to the negotiating table until October. Half a year after the pandemic hit the US. They won’t even agree to a four hours per week “hybrid”. There’s just no credibility left. It’s all out in the open. The union is hell-bent on keeping work-related risk to staff at zero. The kids and families are collateral damage.
But none of that makes it okay to sacrifice the well-being, health, and education of children.

We will longer be a part of MDUSD, because of MDEA.
Sad times we live in, when an immoral and dysfunctional joke of a union is more important than CHILDREN.
MDEA has FAILED our kids for the last time.
It’s so pathetic what these people are doing. For real the union leader is trying to pull some shady communist stuff. Hazardous working environment? All businesses need a picture of union members and teachers who agree with this nonsense and deny services to them. Just like they’re trying to deny working like the rest of us.
The MDUSD Parent Advocates response is great to see, they could have even gone further into the CDC saying teachers were at very low risk and it was safe to go back to school. The union and leadership is really being short sighted damaging this relationship for the long term for a few months on the front end. Every hour, every day counts, our kids need to go back to school.

Hold out the amounts on your property taxes that support the school district.
Teachers – either stand up to your union or find another job. Time to decertify the union. I’m tired of you playing the victim.
If this a legal strategy, then absolutely we should all do this.
Dan and Anita need to resign. If not, they need to be recalled for incompetence and inability to fulfill their job.

Parent – posting a memo from the union is hardly “bashing.”

And for those teachers hiding behind the union, demanding the vaccine as essential workers, refusing to return to work until EVERYONE is vaccinated, refusing to stand up to the union and teaching kids your own (liberal) opinions – go find another job…. maybe as an unpaid intern for the DNC. You’re just playing the victim.
For this teachers that are working full days, not hiding behind the union, and demanding that the schools open – this is not directed towards you.

I’m confused as to why now, it is unsafe for teachers to return to school? I’ve been a school volunteer for ten years. My child and I have been exposed to so many colds, flus, viruses, strep throat, etc., for years while attending school and school events. If a teacher is really too immunocompromised to return for Covid, how have they’ve survived teaching kids for all these years. They’d be dead by now.

If a teacher is THAT immunocompromised, they should not be in a public setting – I whole heartedly agree.
I have tried calling the MDEA a couple of times today, no answer or a busy tone. I wanted to express my opinions to them, politely of course. I did send them an email and I did submit my comments to the Board for tonight’s board meeting. I am still waiting for my code so I can listen in though …

Anyway, if public-school teachers want to leave the profession, nobody is stopping them. Being a teacher is a pain in a lot of ways. So what?
It is up to the adults to protect the children. If a teacher get sick then the whole class risks illness. PROTECT THE CHILDREN.

Salacious is an adjective meaning “encouraging sexual desire or containing too much sexual detail”. It seems like an incorrect choice of word on your part. Furthermore, describing school children as “vile” (morally bad; completely unacceptable) is a bit over the top. Hopefully you aren’t a teacher.
I agree with Led, if teachers don’t like the profession they are free to leave.
Someone wrote this before but it bears repeating. No politician that receives an endorsement from MDEA, CTA or any other teacher’s union will ever receive my vote. Those organizations have damaged our school system beyond recognition.
