by Tony Hicks – County health director Anna Roth told the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors Tuesday that the number of COVID-19 cases countywide has dropped into the state’s red tier for reopening, meaning Contra Costa restaurants, gyms and retail establishments will likely be able to open indoors, with limits, next week.
In-person instruction for grades 7-12 could also restart next week, assuming the county’s case numbers don’t spike.
“If we remain on the same path, which we expect that we will, that means that there will be some changes for our community early next week, or by mid-next week,” Roth said.
County health officer Dr. Chris Farnitano said the overall case rate per 100,000 people has dropped to 8.1 percent — from 10.4 the previous week — which is still over the state-mandated 7 percent. But Contra Costa’s test positivity rate has dropped from 3.4 to 2.9 percent and the county’s equity metric in the hardest-hit regions has dropped from more than 16 percent in mid-January to 4.8 percent.
Both numbers fall into the state’s orange tier, which qualifies Contra Costa for its first official Tuesday toward the two consecutive Tuesdays mandated for the next level of reopening.
“We expect — if these trends continue — to meet the criteria next Tuesday, which means more business activities can be allowed next Wednesday, a week from tomorrow,” Farnitano said.
It would also mean grades 7 through 12 can return to campus, restaurants could reopen indoors at 25 percent capacity or 100 people, and retail could expand capacity from 25 to 50 percent. Gyms and fitness centers could reopen indoors at 10 percent capacity. Churches would remain capped at the their current 25 percent.
County officials also said they expect the state to expand vaccinations to people of all ages with high-risk conditions by March 15 — the same day the county will open another mass vaccination site at Diablo Valley College’s San Ramon campus.
Farnitano said the county will receive a “significant” increase of vaccine in the coming weeks.
More than 27 percent of Contra Costa residents — about 370,000 people — have received at least their first dose. Farnitano said people should still sign up for vaccination where they can, including multiple lists.
Residents can sign up at multiple sites, including the county health site (www.cchealth.org) and the state’s MyTurn page (www.myturn.ca.gov).

Contra Costa being the last / second to last Bay Area county to open is just one more example of FAILURE by this health department and the county board of directors.
None will stick up for kids or small business, they will all go along with whatever is dictated from above, and nobody wants to stir the pot.

I remember when it was all about flattening the curve and masks are not necessary and come to San Francisco (see aunt Nancy) bc there is nothing to be concerned about other than you are a xenophobe. Don’t overwhelm the hospitals. Again and again. It went from that to you need a vaccine. To herd immunity is vaccines AND people getting it. I also remember it was a conspiracy theory saying that you will need a vaccine passport. Wait. It’s being done in other countries. It’s coming to a city near you.

So that’s two out of 3 numbers, but it’s still allowed to go to red? Wasn’t it supposed to be all 3 metrics? Next Tuesday or next Wednesday? Could you kindly inform us as to where you are moving the goalposts so that we can follow?
Did you know they tried making a mRNA vax before? Yes, they tested it on animals. At first they animals showed an immune response (increased T cells, etc.) and then when the animals were challenged with the virus that they were vaccinated for, the results were horrendous compared to the placebo group. Probably why they skipped the animal studies for Covid, huh? Didn’t want anyone to see the results and went straight to humans.
The CEO of Pfizer even said that they are “hacking the software of life”…referring to how the mRNA rewrites DNA.

I watched Newsom’s speech last evening, and it was horrible. He’s on the ropes and clearly nervous. A lot of restrictions will be lifted regardless of data and science. Too little too late.

Newsom has always been nervous acting about this pandemic stuff. Hence I do believe that the governors were told to “toe the line” or their states would not receive their federal funding. With billions on the line how nervous would you be? I’m not defending him in any way but he would have been a big hero if he had exposed the bribe.

Makes no sense. I thought a country had to meet the requirements of a new tier for two weeks before officially being moved into the new tier. Yesterday, when new tiers were assigned, Contra Costa was still above 7/100,000 cases, and still didn’t meet requirements of red tier. So how could it possible be re-opening anything further next week (other than schools, if some agreement is reached)?
