Health officers from 10 Bay Area counties and one city Friday called for California schools to open for full-time, in-person learning in fall 2021.
Officers from Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Sonoma and the city of Berkeley issued a statement supporting opening schools for all grades.
“The lack of in-person learning has disrupted education, weakened the social supports provided by school communities, negatively impacted mental health, and prevented participation in the rituals and shared milestones that tie our communities together,” according to the group statement.
“The science is now clear that the risk of transmission among children wearing masks is very low, even with reduced spacing between desks,” the group asserted.
Factors supporting this conclusion include that in the Bay Area and throughout the state, there are high rates of vaccination among people at increased risk of severe disease, including older adults and those with a high risk of medical complications, according to the group.
Also, children 12 and older are now eligible for vaccinations and there is low overall community prevalence.
The group noted that “many schools” in California have brought students and teachers back to campus under the guidelines of the California Department of Public Health including requirements for face covering, basic cleaning, enhanced ventilation, and other measures to facilitate a safe return to in-person instruction.
Schools are not legally mandated to reopen in the fall, nor has Gov. Gavin Newsom called for them to do so.
California will reopen on June 15 without any capacity limits or physical distancing requirements for businesses or events, the state’s Health and Human Services secretary said May 21.
Newsom in April had announced the expected June 15 reopening date, which state officials confirmed as COVID-19 case numbers and hospitalizations continue to drop and the number of people vaccinated continues to increase.
Now, if only the Teacher Unions and state elected officials would follow the science…

So California is going to reopen June 15, but it doesn’t mention masks. It’s really past time to ditch the mask requirements. I find them particularly noxious when working out at the gym.

Masks are for Halloween. Leave the children alone already you demented psychos. Nobody even wants what you’re selling. Teachers and indoctrination centers are completely obsolete. You get a way better learning experience from real life and online. Nobody needs your little controlled narrative that isn’t real and has no application to life except to be a good little follower.

Well teachers it’s time to start earning those paychecks again.The vacation is over.
Just so you know, my wife has worked harder this year than in past years, and she always work hard. Being a high school teacher means constant work, and WFH—while simultaneously teaching in-person students along with students on Zoom—isn’t a picnic. This was no vacation I can assure you. Cheating is out-of-control, and very little learning has gone on this year. Students aren’t required to be on camera, so it’s anyone’s guess if they’re “in” class after they sign on. My wife wanted to go back last fall normally, i.e., no mask, distancing, constant hand sanitizing, etc, but the union has a stranglehold on teachers. The union call the shots, pretending to care about students. Although most are, not every teacher, including my wife, is a raging liberal.
Teachers are obsolete, learn to code
The teachers are the union. If parents love their children and want the best for them they would dump public schools and support private and charter schools. The parents should be in control of their kids education, not a bunch of lying, corrupt unions and their politician partners

There are some teachers who deplore what the union supports, so your blanket statement isn’t accurate. The union is a liberal-leaning Democratic PAC, which masquerades as supporters of children. Unfortunately, the school boards and district administration are just as bad—the superintendent of one school district sent out letters to parents after the George Floyd verdict. It was to note that in “…our district, we teach that each and every one of us plays a role in creating a safe, equitable and inclusive school environment that is free from racism and discrimination.”
I am in complete agreement with regard to getting kids out of the public schools, AKA, indoctrination centers. Run!
You do realize charter schools are a fraud and have for the most part failed. Stop wasting our tax dollars on experimental schools with little to no oversight.

Reported statistics have been manipulated to meet the needs of your political agenda.

I just can’t wait to see what you dream up next to try and maintain your power.
So far, an overabundance of caution and following the science has been your main excuse for harming the citizens.

I cannot understand why schools would not be legally mandated to open if the science says they are safe to open? Who legally requires schools to open? I would think that should happen or maybe we need some refunds on the taxes we pay for school buildings and maintenance….

Too bad the schools can’t learn from this. They will be going back to the over crowded classrooms at the high schools. Bullying and fighting in the locker rooms and vaping in the restrooms. Smaller classes work. The schools claim there isn’t money for smaller classes. But the state is giving money away like there is no tomorrow. And, just wait until fall. The schools are going full force into the social justice, BLM, America is racist education. You haven’t seen anything yet.
