The number of people killed on the state’s highways and of those arrested for driving under the influence over the Memorial Day weekend rose significantly from a year ago, according to figures released Tuesday by the CHP.

At least 35 people were killed in vehicle collisions, up nearly 13 percent from 2020. Of those, 22 were not wearing a seat belt, officers said.

CHP made 979 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, up 14.6 percent from a year ago.

blacks aren’t insulted when they are told they are too dumb to get a drivers license
legal immigrants aren’t insulted when illegals get to go first, get free education/indoctrination for their kids
mind altering drugs are legal, gosh how could that possible go wrong?
if the vaccine works why do those who got it demand those who didn’t, get it?

Happy Fireworks going off every night because that is how things are in tee-a-wan-na…

I understand some not wanting the vaccine but can’t understand not wearing a seat belt. 22 out of 35 killed not wearing a belt should tell you something. That is crazy. That’s a lot of people dead in any case.

I was thinking the same thing,….surprised so many were not wearing seat belts, and how many may have survived if they did.

a 98% survival rate for those who were cited for a DUI. Where have I seen that 98% survival rate number before?

Where have I seen someone not wear something because of safety?

A pretty good haul. Should add about 10 mil to Newsome’s kitty.

While the numbers are tragic (all lives matter), I suspect the rate is significantly lower than last year when there were significantly lower numbers of people out and about on the roads.

Not wearing a seatbelt is one of the dumbest things anyone can do.

Reads like a pandemic. California government should put a ban on certain cars/restrict people who are able to drive a car or maybe have a list of people who shouldn’t be driving cars, or something.

@Ricardoh
I think it is called Darwinism.

For sure.

CHP: 973 DUI arrests, 21 deaths on Memorial Day weekend as of Monday.

From 2019, doesn’t include Monday of that 3 day weekend. Anything is going to look inflated compared to last year.

Exactly. Not sure what the point is of comparing it to 2020.

Well, we have been under a dictatorship for a year now. People are out making bad decisions (drugs and booze) because they are soft and cannot use good coping strategies. Another consequence of having kept things shut down needlessly for so long.

Over last year?

Everything is up over last year other than the things that were up last year which are going to be down this year.

More than half of those killed were not wearing seat belts=thinning of the herd. Don’t worry if you receive any traffic citations. Just refuse to pay them. Claim COVID, RACIAL INJUSTICE, or INDIGENT.

2020 was a statistical outlier in every way. Any comparison made with regard to 2020 in hopes of establishing a trend is completely worthless; the folly of simpletons.
