The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved a new statewide benefit program to feed eligible children in need in California.
As the pandemic closed almost half of the state’s child care facilities, young children who depended on school and day care meal programs to be fed ran into difficulties accessing nutritious meals.
“The pandemic has placed additional strain on many families that were already struggling to provide healthy meals for their kids,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, who, on Wednesday, announced the approval of the program. “This program provides critical assistance so that our low-income young children can get the nutritious foods at home they need to thrive.”
The Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) program will reimburse children ages 6 and younger for breakfast, lunch and snack. The USDA estimates that about $984 million is to be administered to a million eligible children in the state.
To qualify for benefits, children must have received CalFresh benefits for at least a month since Oct. 1, 2020, and live in an area that has a closed school or one with reduced hours. Eligible children will automatically receive the benefits without application, and the state will begin issuing P-EBT debit cards as soon as early July.
The P-EBT plan will expand to children over the age of 6 if approved by the USDA.
The language used in that article presents children as independent entitles that require help from the state to survive. They totally ignored the fact it’s on the parents to feed and care for their own children. We really are living in a clown world.
In any case, the majority of that food aid will got to illegal alien children as it always does and we will pay for it.
If you can not feed them don’t breed them.
So, let’s get this straight. We are continuing to reward people for making bad decisions? If you can’t afford kids, we will just steal money from those who planned and give you free stuff. Yeah. This seems fair. And, then we are trusting these people who can’t even feed their kids to then actually take care of those kids? Yep. Totally makes sense.
Schools are planning to open this fall and qualified children will get free meals at school. Does anybody really think parents will use this P-EBT card for food for their children? What could possibly go wrong?
Giving bad parents more free money. Can’t possibly go wrong.
This kind of welfare is simply dysgenics.
The really SICK part is we can assume these children are still alive and not already dead from starvation, correct? Therefore, clearly they have been eating. So, when the free food was unavailable, the parents found a way to feed their kids, like parents have fed their children since the dawn of man.
WHY IN THE HELL do we have to reimburse the parents for feeding their own children?
Also, note the majority of CalFresh recipients are ADULTS (18-59), not children or the elderly.
The insanity in this state never ends.
And we wonder why there is a plague of illegal aliens.
I’m not against food aid for the needy – not at all. I’m against the public school system acting as the all powerful Borg. If closing schools causes multiple crises in every direction, from keeping nurses at home taking care of their kids to putting strain on family food budgets … maybe we shouldn’t have let the public school system shut itself down? But of course we don’t really have a say, do we? That’s just between the politicians and the teacher’s unions.
Have you seen the size of some of these kids and their parents? I’d say that the fast food outlets have gotten a lot of their business!
Dude, now there’s a good point. Childhood obesity is out of control, and the poorer the kid, the more likely they are to be obese! The richer the child, the less likely they are to be obese. Funny, that.
Wil the children actually receive these benefits? I think not. The same mom and dad who fail to feed their children will fail to feed their children. This money will go to “other priorities”, no doubt.
Schools have been providing breakfast & lunch to all children during the closure. They plan to continue throughout the summer. Anyone can drive or walk up and say they need food and no proof of children is needed. I know people who don’t qualify for free or reduced meals but get the meals every day for their children. Their attitude is why should we pay to feed our children when we can get it for free.
