Tide-poolers and beachgoers should keep an eye out for King Tides, the highest tides of the year, which are expected to cause minor flooding in some low-lying areas through Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
King Tides occur when tidal forces maximize as the moon, earth, and sun come into alignment, with the moon nearest to earth and the earth nearest to the sun.
Historically, the tides have brought flooding to low-lying areas around San Francisco Bay and some sites along the Pacific coast, such as near Elkhorn Slough near Moss Landing.
The King Tides will be followed later in the afternoons by the lowest low tides of the season, which could mean trouble for boaters in shallow waterways, forecasters said.
The King Tides are forecast to peak on Sunday and a coastal flood advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. Monday.
Local tidal data forecasts are available for several coastal and San Francisco Bay locations at www.tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov.
Some claim such forces increase chances for earth quakes.
Again, it’s climate change caused by man. Come on everyone, stop living so you can protect Mother Earth.
A bit dramatic no? 😝
Yes climate change has been happening off and on for billions of years..exactly as it’s happening now..
Who did the dinosaurs blame?
Why must the name of something always change to a PC or a feel good title?
When common sense was in vogue, we called this a ‘Plus Tide or a Minus Tide’ and that was the end of it.
Happy New Year…
When a full moon and high tide coincide, then the result is called a King Tide.
In North Carolina, where I was born and raised, the worst possible scenario is to be anywhere near the part of the coast where a HURRICANE “makes land” at the same time as a King Tide. Mandatory evacuation warnings go out as soon as the hurricane’s path starts seriously heading anywhere within 250 or so miles of the Outer Banks or the other barrier islands to the south/southwest of them.
Experienced beach-property owners start filling vehicle tanks and putting all outdoor items into contained spaces as soon as the hurricane’s tracking path seems set. They’ll also be boarding up the windows and doors so that their families can leave ahead of the deniers’ and procrastinating tourists’ rush (and then completely stalled) traffic on coastal highway #17 and I-95 until they can cut farther inland to their city homes or to stay with friends and relatives.
The Governor, the Highway Patrol, the Coast Guard. and all public communication outlets co-operate so as to give advance notice of when the causeway bridges across the salt marsh and backwater sides of the islands will become inland-bound ONLY. Then come mandatory evacuations orders; next, door-to-door human contact to make sure everyone is out (you’ve seen TV footage of these teams marking each “entered and searched to be clear of humans and animals” by marking the door with. large “X”; some elderly people resist leaving (and some ignorant showoff tourists, too). Finally, comes an announcement that after x more hours NO emergency responders will be allowed to go out and try to save people.
If I lived on a headlands cliff on the California coast, I would voluntarily come inland if a King Tide were forecast to coincide with high winds and/or a rainstorm.
Absolutely Jose, I’ve been on the bay most of my life and it was always called + or – tides. Just had to be more conscious of depth charts and obstructions in certain areas.
The local TV station this morning was interviewing people on the embarcadero about the king tide and they were indicating such fear that this was going to start flooding all our cities because of global warming.
Well how do you explain that 70 years ago that same seawall in San Francisco was built and water left over it then during high tides?
I remember the embarcadero flooding 50 years ago when I was a boy!
The news also reported recently that the St Lawrence seaway has so much ice melting that ships can now go through it in the winter……….. for the first time in 300 years!
What does that tell you? We are in a climate cycle that’s been going on for eons. And let me tell you a few degrees of global warming is far better than a few degrees of global cooling which would mean the death of millions with the glaciers probably coming through Canada to the US.
I’m not going to panic. I
The earth comes closest to the sun in winter.
During the “new” moon phase, moon and sun are aligned on one side of earth, causing a strong gravitational force. You have higher than normal tides and lower than normal “minus” tides. Check your tide table for the new moons during winter.
Our king tide tomorrow is an 8.8, with a low of -1.8.
One more reason to wear a mask…?
