The Walnut Creek Bomb Squad and Police in Pleasant Hill shut down gas pumps at a local service station late Saturday after two people were found with an explosive device in their car.
Officers on the graveyard shift arrested two suspects after finding the device in a car at a Chevron station at 1705 Contra Costa Boulevard.
The Walnut Creek police bomb squad responded and rendered the device safe, according to Pleasant Hill police.
“Making and possessing explosive devices is not safe,” police said on social media. “It puts the fabricator and the entire community at risk.”
Last week, Pleasant Hill police arrested a suspect for allegedly setting off illegal fireworks at an ARCO gas in the area of Pleasant Hill Road and Devon Avenue.
The explosion, about 11:15 p.m. on Dec. 28, caused moderate damage to a vehicle. The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, was booked into jail on suspicion of multiple offenses, police said. No injuries were reported.
They must have had a tip. Wonder why they looked into the car. Glad they did but we need details.

Since speculation is the name of the game here, my theory is that officers in patrolling squad cars noticed an occupied vehicle parked at the pump island after the station’s business hours. And then……etc..
Every squad car should be out on patrol during every single shift. Just seeing one can tamp down a potential law-breaker’s “plans”.
I have the utmost respect for bomb squad officers’ skill and bravery, and I always wonder whether they received training in the military.

If you mean that attendants were on duty, then do you guess that an attendant observed suspicious behavior or items and called 911?
It may have been expired tags or head light out, etc., that warranted the initial contact. Did this story say they ran a warrant check and there was a warrant out for one of them? Kind of stupid to be driving around with a homemade fire cracker and hey, let’s stop for gas in PH. I thought everyone knew that PHPD patrols and pulls over people. Same in Walnut Creek. Don’t drive with expired tags In either city.
