Brook Street Park Reopened With The Help Of Assemblywoman Rebecca Bauer-Kahan

Lafayette’s Brook Street Park looked more like Brook Street Airport on Monday.

The city on Monday reopened the newly-renovated park, with Assembly member Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, D-Orinda, Lafayette Mayor Teresa Gerringer and members of the Lafayette Parks, Trails and Recreation Commission attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The celebration of the cozy community park had an airport theme. Attendees got pretzels and “Lafayette Airlines” pins.

The improvements were finished in March and included a new wood chip surface along with synthetic turf and new asphalt concrete pathways, with an ADA ramp.

The city replaced the old pirate ship with new aeronautical-themed play equipment, adding four toddler swings, two of which are paired with traditional strap swings for a shared intergenerational experience. Workers also replaced benches, a picnic table, drinking fountain–which now includes a bottle filler–and trash receptacles.

“These improvements both updated this neighborhood park and made it more accessible for users with physical disabilities,” Gerringer said.

Bauer-Kahan secured $291,000 in state grant funds toward the much-needed improvements. Brook Street Park is located at 3562 Brook St. in downtown Lafayette.

Now if only we could get a playground and washroom facilities at Leigh Creekside Park. Local parents are willing to pay for the installation.

Lafayette seriously lags peer communities in quality playgrounds.
