The CHP has closed the eastbound hwy.24 connector to northbound I-680 due to a pedestrian on the freeway.
Walnut Creek Police are closing on-ramps and some surface streets in the area.
UPDATE: The pedestrian appears to be suicidal. They have a police negotiator talking with the man.
Traffic is backed up to Oakland.
UPDATE #2: The road is back open and the man has been taken into custody.

Unfortunately, for the sake of everyone involved, it isn’t that easy. Most of the time, the person is over the edge ready to jump. The police had to shut down all the surrounding streets in case the person jumped to protect those underneath. Sad the person felt that was the only option. 😢
@ Cristina…..unfortunately this person is an attention seeker. There are plenty of ways to commit suicide without making a scene about it.

Commuter from concord here left oakland at 2:07 and got back at 4:45 just so you know what your in for. Everyone is being diverted to the mt diable exit before WC. All of 680 is closed. Take pleasant hill rd if you can. Cheers all drive safe. Leave room for each other.

I took Happy Valley Rd to Bear Creek Rd to Alhambra to Reliez Valley Rd to get to Pleasant Hill. What a mess this was.
If he tried that on the LA freeway a citizen would get him off the freeway pretty quickly.
Came up on him at about 1:45 directly across from Ygnacio off ramp leaning against K-rail in the fast lane. If I did not move over I would have clipped him with my mirror at 65+ mph. Young adult white male in a black beanie cap blue mask around his chin.

I drove by this going the opposite way at 3:30pm. It sent chills through my body to see the guy looking as if he was ready to jump. The traffic on that side was dead stopped from there all the was past the Caldecot Tunnel! I sure hope they were able to talk him down! Prayers……

Wow! I’m lucky because I left Oakland right after lunch for a Kaiser appointment in Walnut Creek so I missed it all.
I pity all the thousands stuck in traffic, and the thousands of gallons of extra gas being unnecessarily burned. I know this sounds mean, but this guy needs to be chased down and caught, and if he jumps so be it. We’ve gotten to the crazy point in this country -and a traveler from Holland this past month pointed out to me- that we will inconvenience 999 people for one oddball.
Yes, for sure. People are too coddled. I think we need options for people who want to painlessly end their lives. That helps keeps others safe too. Like the suicide booths from futurama, for example. Or, just do what Holland does. We cannot keep letting the 1 selfish a hole out of 1,000 ruin everything for everyone else.

I’m totally surprised at some of the negativity to someone who is suicidal.
What if it was a family member of yours or someone you know? The police handled it correctly and talked the person to get help.
It’s not always about “you” to those of you who thinks he should have been left to kill himself.
But it is always about the 1% of those who ruin it for everyone else. It is never about what is good for the most. That is the problem with our society and why we are in such an awful place right now.
This “cry for help,” this exercise in melodrama, probably cost the state hundreds of thousands of dollars, and cost I don’t even know how many thousands of people several hours apiece.

@ Annalisa…were you caught up in this mess? You might have a different opinion if you were. This attention seeker should be given two choices…1.) Live out his days in a mental hospital, or 2.) Work the rest of his days paying off the debt he owes to society for causing such a mess.

How long do you negotiate with someone when they are going to go on a legal hold anyway? I drove by the opposite way at 5:30 and saw a man sitting on the overpass with at least 8 officers in the area right around him, then a dozen CHP, then the ambulance, then a few unmarked blacked out police trucks. A while later there were multiple helicopters in the area. Did they call the crisis team out too late or do we need to reevaluate our approach to keep order in our community? I was shocked to hear the incident was first reported around 1:45pm. For transparency, my profession is directly related to legal psychiatric holds.
Someone ready to kill themselves does not stop traffic on a freeway for 3 freaking hours and also where was he jumping? Onto a freeway below with regular flow of moving traffic? I highly doubt jumping from that overpass would even kill someone. Sounds like someone wanting attention or just another mental illness case that, sadly, have become everyday encounters here in Claycord.

30 year paramedic here. If you stop him from suicide now, he will try again. The selfish jerk caused a traffic nightmare due to his own needs. Let him do whatever he does and nature will take its course. Stop him and he will try this again next month.
