California’s COVID-19 rent relief program has surpassed $3 billion in dispersed funding to more than 275,000 households, state officials said this week.
The state has distributed $3.1 billion in rent and utility assistance payments to households across the state that have lost income due to the COVID pandemic, more than any other state in the country, according to state Business, Consumer Services and Housing Secretary Lourdes Castro Ramirez.
Funding for the program came from the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act. The state closed applications for the program March 31, with statewide eviction protections remaining in place for those with unfulfilled applications.
“The state’s rent relief program has been a critical component of California’s COVID-19 response and would not have been possible without the federal funding we have received and the close partnership with local jurisdictions and community-based organizations,” Castro Ramirez said in a statement.
According to Castro Ramirez, hundreds of local organizations helped the program reach underserved areas and assisted with the completion of more than 178,000 applications.
Both landlords and renters were eligible for the program. Relief funds are paid directly to the person or organization to whom the outstanding payment is owed.
In total, nearly 475,000 households applied to the program, according to data from the rent relief program.
“This program has been a vital resource for Californians impacted by COVID-19 and we know there is more work to be done to address the housing instability impacting many Californians,” Castro Ramirez said.
Where do I submit my mortgage relief application?
WC, I was thinking the same thing.
I would also like some assistance with my property taxes as well!
another EDD debacle? All illegals eligible?
$3 billion’s chump change compared to the $33 billion they are planning to give to Ukraine. Think of it is our downpaymenrt on WWIII.
But look at the bright side, when Ukraine loses nearly a generation of men due to US/NATO propped up and prolonged fighting – they can import more men from war torn countries in Africa or the Mid-East
So they needed a state of emergency to usher in and normalize socialism. Nice.
Goodie more freebees so I have to pay more taxes.I paid my own rent and bills through the pandemic. There are plenty of jobs to make money and pay it back.No incentive to to that.
When the federal funding ends , the state tax payers will be funding this because you know Newsom won’t end it.
If I got the decimals correct, the $3 billion divided by the population of California of 40 million leads to $75 dollars per man, woman, and child in California. It’s so easy for the government of California to spend other people’s money. Let’s see how much money of ours they spend to subsidize citizens of other states to come to California for abortions if the Supreme Court decides as expected.
And if under subpoena they were asked exactly where and to whom the funds were dispersed, they would have no answer.

Can you say “BAILOUT”?

PAY UP OR MOVE OUT.
Political Money Laundering 101: Take from YOU and give to their corporate buddies.
Look at where all of the money went and you’ll see that NONE of it went to help out those who were told that they Could Not work.
The government subsidizing people’s rent is simply wrong.
Pandemic or no.
The government should have helped the owners but in a far more limited way.
The landlords are ultimately responsible for their businesses.
The renters are not responsible for the business.
Like everything else, the government got it backwards and fails again.
You know what Cello the tenancy situation has nothing to do with responsibility and has everything to do with solutions.
We had new neighbors move in 15 months ago. They paid their deposit and 1st months rent. Haven’t paid anything since. And they both work. Landlord can’t evict them because of the covid law.
