The Contra Costa Board of Supervisors on Tuesday will discuss oversight of the county sheriff’s office and a recommendation from the county’s public protection committee to create a regular reporting structure to the board from the sheriff’s office.
Assembly Bill 1185, which became law Jan. 1, 2021, authorizes the county to establish a sheriff oversight board and/or an inspector general to assist in its oversight duty. Doing either requires action on the board’s part or a public vote.
The law also authorizes an oversight board and/or an inspector general to issue a subpoena when deemed necessary to investigate a matter within that jurisdiction. It also says exercising that power can’t obstruct the sheriff’s office’s ability to conduct investigations.
The staff report for Tuesday’s meeting says four out of nine Bay Area counties have established an inspector general or a sheriff oversight board, with two other counties in the process of doing so.
The county administrator’s office and the sheriff’s office have developed the framework for a quarterly oversight report to present to the board, updating it on sheriff’s office activities and allowing the board to ask questions about operational issues. The report would cover custody services, field operations, support services, and administration.
Custody services include total number of bookings, number of participants in custody alternatives, in-custody deaths, and medical data overseen by the county health department.
The department would also report on coroner cases, internal affairs investigations, use of force events, assaults on staff, interactions with immigration officials, racial data, evictions, and other significant events.
The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors meets at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the board chamber at the county administration building, at 1025 Escobar Street in Martinez.

How about a oversight committee for the DA
It is always something to do with “people of color” issues!! If they list the authors of this bill, it will probably reveal the usual suspects as in other bills that hamstring LEs.
How about we forget the color card and concentrate on prosecuting “People of Crime”.
Or a better idea, we create a new gender called “Criminal”.
The criminals will just identify as non-criminals because that is how these delusions work.
Probably trying to make sure they don’t issue any CCW permits, lol. Can’t let that pesky Constitution get in the way of the liberal agenda.
I’m all for accountability, but let’s start with the Board of Supervisors…

At least Karen is on her way out and to be fair I know several in her district that called her with issues and she got on it. Best of the bunch is Candace but she reps the rich folks but I know she is a real fact and figure person. And the new county CAO they hired left San Joaquin County in a hot mess
So, if people want accountability, show up at the ballot box
It would be a good idea to have an oversight for the sheriff office to keep the personnel on theirs toes and maybe prevent them doing things off the book, which could prevent lawsuits.
Let me tell you where the woke are taking us.
Two days ago in Oakland 6 men broke into a pot shop in the early morning hours. The alarm went off but the robbers took three hours to clean the place of its stash and safe. The police showed up an hour after the robbers left. They said no one was available to take the call. I think no one wanted to take the call. Why risk your life for ingrates?
What!? They (the police) don’t do the job but get paid. Outrageous and cowardice. Is the police union turning the blind eyes? Time to disband the Oakland pd and start fresh. I would hire trump to fire the officers due to his catchphrase
It is way more than just the police not showing up. It is the whole criminal justice system.
@Paul not defending inaction from the police, but there are businesses around Oakland displaying signs stating that they refuse service to police officers in uniform.
Another bureaucracy created, and guess who will be paying for it.

The supervisors recommended to themselves that they should have more oversight of the sheriff’s office. The sheriff is an elected position. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.
The Sheriff’s office has been busy patrolling the streets of Walnut Creek, since the smash and grab creeps. Looks like when they let their guard down they hit again
The Board of Supervisors needs to monitor City Hall in Walnut Creek. Noone seems to be doing their jobs and I am not talking about the Police/
