If you wanted a pure-bred puppy in 1974, you had to look no further than the Sunvalley Pet Shop in the Sunvalley Mall in Concord.
They had American Eskimo and Brittany puppies for $50 & $60, and also had full-bred Dobermans, Beagles, Irish Setters, German Shepherds, and Cocker Spaniels.
They claimed to have been able to get any AKC breed.
They eventually closed in the early 1990s.
The pet store was on the lower level. Bonus points to those who can tell us exactly where it was located.

I would go into that store all of the time. I believe it was located near Sears on the left.
Next to Macy’s where the video store eventually was for years.
My dad used to take us to the mall when we were kids, and that was one of our favorite stores. Now I know better. Please adopt a homeless pet before considering a puppy mill. My dog adoption through ARF was the best thing I ever did…he is smart and sweet, and my best friend.
Across from the Kress store. And if my memory is intact that place was shut down for selling sick “registered” puppies among other things.
I also recall the same reason why the store was shut down.
Use to visit the shop once in a while and was kind of sad to see the puppies locked up.
But one time I couldn’t help myself, and our daughter & I asked to see & pet the Akita pup.
We had a friend, who had an Akita, and our daughter loved it.
We brought her home and you could tell she was happy to be with us.
The Vet said we were lucky that this pup was in pretty good health.
At one point, Keiko Chan, the Akita, weighed more than our daughter, LOL!!
The only dog we ever had and really miss her.
I don’t remember a pet shot at all. Particularly up until the 90s!
We got our first Boston Terror from the pet store inside a Knoxville Sears store. She was a sweetheart and was absolutely wonderful with the kids. She also lived longer than any dog we’ve had since. We later decided AKC papers didn’t mean that much.
Before leaving California, we adopted two dogs from Wonder Dog Rescue in San Francisco. They are an amazing organization! All of our current dogs are shelter rescues who love being with us.
I remember the store, but I also remember they were accused of being a part of a puppy breeding mill.
Bottom level closer to McDonald’s then JCPenney’s. Very near my Sanrio store I believe. Thinking it’s where GameStop is now.
I give up Mayor – where was the location? Inquiring minds want to know.
It was on the lower level on the right side heading towards Sears, just past where Macys is. It used to be mg favorite thing to go do as a little girl until my grandma bought a sick puppy from there. Of course they were puppy mill pups. They were $50 😳
@KIM….Exactly, across from the Kress store. Kress store was a 5¢ and 10¢ store similar to Woolworth’s in ’74, not sure how long it was there.
@KIM….Orange Julius was underneath the escalators across from the pet shop also back then.
We got a purebred beagle puppy here in early 1976. Sweet girl, we named her Angel. Poor girl – she developed diabetes and we had to put her down at age 7 1/2.
We rescued our current dog, a fox terrier. He’s blind but is now 15.
