Ham and pinto beans with sweet cornbread. I have a serving bowl in the fridge at all times for a quick winter meal, just now finished a bowl. Cooked Jello tapioca pudding in the box. Fried okra ranks pretty high on my list too. Thanks to Granny for teaching me the basic southern dishes as a kid, you’re sorely missed…,oh oh oh…apricot fried pies, mmmmm.

port wine. Is that considered a food?

Hanne Jeppesen December 22, 2022 - 12:18 PM - 12:18 PM

I love a good port, which unfortunately is very expensive, some medium prized ones are also good. Ones at a Christmas party I had a really good glass of port, and years ago when my friends and I use to go into the City on Friday nights, we were at Perry’s on Union Street, and met some guys who were in town because of a convention for a liquer company, they bought us some really nice port, since they were on an expense account. That was it, no dates no party afterwards, just chatted at Perry’s.

@Hanne I am good with TJs Ruby port, just $6.50. I probably have not had what most consider a good port, but to be honest, my palate is not tremendously discerning, and I could not tell a $7 from a $50 bottle, other than it cost me more money. I would assume a much more expensive one must have something I could tell is different.

@Cowellian: I have. My wife bought one of those 375 mL bottles. I enjoyed, but it did not seem much different to me than TJs version. I guess I am just a simple man with simple tastes (and a simple mind, some would say….).

Cowellian December 22, 2022 - 1:44 PM - 1:44 PM

If you like port wine, give V. Sattui’s Madeira a try.

My granny’s homemade old-fashioned donuts, fried in lard. Oh, and her fried chicken. Also, five-cheese mac’n cheese, which I make in a casserole dish. Merry Christmas, all!

Hanne Jeppesen December 22, 2022 - 12:22 PM - 12:22 PM

I guess I will have to say mashed potatoes, since my Dad grew potatoes. Here I buy the white sweet potatoes, sometimes mix with russet potatoes. Try to not use too much butter, but some, then a little sour cream. Soup is also a comfort soup, I grew up on all kinds of homemade soup, chicken with dumplings, yellow pea soup, others. I rarely make my own soup, although I buy the Knorr vegetable soup, then add fresh veggies, parsnip, leeks, potatoes, carrots, so that get close to homemade.
