A body found in the water at Pier 39 on Wednesday was identified as missing San Francisco radio host Jeffrey Vandergrift, according to the San Francisco medical examiner’s office.

San Francisco police first responded to reports of a person in the water at Pier 39 shortly before 5 p.m.

On Thursday, the San Francisco medical examiner confirmed that the body was Vandergrift, 54, who was last seen in late February at his home on King Street.

His employer, Wild 94.9, said there was no trackable activity on his phone, credit cards or bank accounts since he was reported missing.

His wife announced on his radio station’s social media channels that Vandergrift will likely “not be coming back”, due to personal information discovered in early March.

Police do not suspect foul play in Vandergrift’s death.

It’s a wonder the seals or something didn’t eat him. He has been down there a long time. Good they found him.

We call that a “floater”.
.
Bummer to the M.E. techs who had to do the recovery. Roulette!

I saw CG crew put a drowned guy on the launch dock at Benicia Marina once.
The four of them looked ill. Victim had been missing a couple weeks.
I was on my boat maybe 30 yards away and thankfully did not see too much detail.

I have pulled a floater before. It’s terrible to say the least. I still get images of the divers mask in my dreams

One of his first assignments was diving to retrieve bodies from Hurricane Catrina.

I feel so sad, I listened to JV in the morning all of my days going to Nursing school, my daughter’s listened to 94.9 religiously. They pretty much grew up listening to JV…he always had great music and made morning commutes so much better, when we lived in the Bay area but moved 2 years ago for military purposes! Fly high JV.. u got ur angel wings n a golden halo! Condolences to his wife and family from the East Coast

Our whole community is heartbroken and want to let Natasha and his family know that now we have closure. Now can start the healing process and lay him to rest! JV has been apart of my morning commute for over 20 years. When I would get up in the morning and take my kids to school, my radio station was locked in to 94.9. My girls with tried to change it and I slap their hands and they reminded me of just how much fun we had in the mornings listening to the JV morning show, not that I needed any reminding. When I moved away from San Jose to Stockton, the radio station in my car had a lot of static but I did not care because I only listen to 94.9 in the morning on my way to work JV you will always be remembered and never forgotten. Please send Natasha some signs that you are with her. She loved you to the moon and back.

RIP. The symbolic death of terrestrial radio as well. Hard to find a non lame DJ on the FM dial these days.

Yes me too had that dial sell to 94.9, I even had the wild colorfull sticker on my car back in the day. ( I’ve been gone for 20 yrs). You made the commute of the San Mateo bridge tolerable. JV we loved you guy. Enjoy the party in heaven.

I find you comment somewhat inappropriate. Apparently he was dealing with serious health issues. I do not listen to that station, but have followed the story. He was diagnosed with Lime disease some years ago I think. However, before he went missing, he told his listerners that some symtoms were back, and worse than the pain, he said it was doing things to his brain he couldn’t even describe. Show a little respect, apparently he was suffering in more ways than one.

JV was my favorite part of the Dog House !!! After high school I joined the military and I never every came across any radio show at like wild 94.9’s dog house. Many imitators and biters of his style. I always wondered what happened to all of them. JV will be missed, my condolences to his family, God takes the good ones when they are way too young. 🙏🙏🙏❤️
