.
Oakland leaders and its residents should be celebrating the clearing and razing of the Wood Street Encampment.
.
All that blight was plowed under today.

Book report: The Green Hills of Earth, Robert A Heinlein, 1941to 1949.This is a collection of 10 short stories. I think I enjoyed “It’s Great To Be Back” the most. For a twisty story, “…We Also Walk Dogs.” While all of them are aimed at older teen to young adult I thing older adults would enjoy them too.

They have been cleaning up the homeless camps along 242 this week. It’s nice not to see all the garbage piled up. I hope it stays that way!

“Cocaine Bear” is a surprisingly good movie!

It was pretty funny.

The first two episodes of the scifi series “Silo” on AppleTV+ are also good. Also for those into wine the “Drops of God” drama is good on there too (en Francais avec subtitles).

Driving back to Concord from Rancho Cordova yesterday(near Sacramento), I decided to avoid all the traffic around Davis, and Fairfield, and most every where, and take I-5 to the backroads of the Delta, through Elk Grove, along Twin Cities road to Walnut Grove, detouring briefly through Locke. Sure enough, in Locke, the ancient restaurant now known as Al’s, formerly Al The Wop’s, is still operating. Officially the name has been changed to Al’s, but the sign outside still says Al The Wop’s. From Walnut Grove, over the bridge to Ryde, where we were detoured along a lot of narrow country roads, seeing more vineyards than I ever knew existed, in addition to all the vineyards we saw along the Twin Cities road.
Grapes as far as one could see. Where are all these grapes going? More wine, I guess. That peaceful drive through the Delta sure beat the heck out of fighting mid-day traffic.

Back in the day, if I needed to go to Sacramento, and I wasn’t in a hurry, I’d take Highway 160 up through the Delta. It was a more enjoyable trip than taking the Interstate, unless it was rainy or foggy, when there were always serious accidents along the route.

MikeT May 6, 2023 - 8:15 AM - 8:15 AM

Spent alot of time at Al’s the Wop’s back in the 80’s. Always had a great meal and a great time. Remember sticking dollar bills to the ceiling via paper pins thru the bill, a silver dollar under that, throwing it up, and hopefully it drove the pin into the ceiling!

Jeff (the other one) May 6, 2023 - 3:06 PM - 3:06 PM

Sounds quite pleasant The OG…I like driving around the Delta, love seeing the water.

nytemuvr May 6, 2023 - 3:22 PM - 3:22 PM

@THE OLD GOAT….Had many a steak sandwich with peanut butter back in the 70s/80s, a short putt for a good meal. The Ryde Hotel was a great spot for an adult libation too…good times.

nytemuvr May 6, 2023 - 3:33 PM - 3:33 PM

Those steak sandwiches with peanut butter were Al the WOP’s specialties and “WOP” was what Italian people “WithOut Papers” meant.

The Old Goat May 6, 2023 - 4:50 PM - 4:50 PM

Remember when the Ryde Hotel was said to be haunted? I stayed there one night, but saw no sign of any ghosts or such.

nytemuvr May 7, 2023 - 10:19 AM - 10:19 AM

@THE OLD GOAT….I do remember that, but after a couple of fresh fruit daiquiris made with 151 rum you might see most anything.

Mark May 6, 2023 - 12:03 AM - 12:03 AM

Went to the Safeway on Treat and Clayton, there was this woman passed out on the trash can near the shopping carts. I tried to get a shopping cart without waking this person up. As I’m getting the shopping cart, this woman starts cussing me out and accusing me of trying to steal her backpack. I’m just trying to do my grocery shopping and have no interest in stealing anyone’s backpack. Thinking it’s time to start doing online shopping.

Bob May 6, 2023 - 1:24 AM - 1:24 AM

I just want to tell you both, good luck, we’re all counting on you.

The plot is getting thicker….

Dr. Jellyfinger May 6, 2023 - 7:37 AM - 7:37 AM

Ladies and gentlemen, this is your stewardess speaking… We regret any inconvenience the sudden cabin movement might have caused, this is due to periodic air pockets we encountered, there’s no reason to become alarmed, and we hope you enjoy the rest of your flight… By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?

Taking a break from packing up kitchen for remodel to check happy people into the wine walk. And after check-in will partake with a few friends. Neither rain nor snow or dark of night will keep the wine walker inside. Only heavy smoke detour wine walkers

Does anyone know where the Concord Road Repair and Repaving crews are working?

I know they are not working on the roads I travel!

Bob May 6, 2023 - 1:36 PM - 1:36 PM

Think they blew through about five years budget redoing Dekinger.

The Fearless Spectator May 6, 2023 - 1:15 PM - 1:15 PM

I saw a very peculiar thing this morning. On a street corner near Heather Farm there was a person in a poncho and mask standing in the rain. They had a large billboard sign tied around their neck with thick rope. The sign said something along the lines of, “I lied to my mother and stole from Chevron.” They we’re still standing there an hour later.
I’ve been around a while and I’ve never seen anything like this. Quite sad really.

Juryisout May 6, 2023 - 5:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Why is it sad? I fail to even see the need to even notice the individual.

The Fearless Spectator May 6, 2023 - 6:36 PM - 6:36 PM

Being aware of your surroundings is adaptive behavior. Especially these days.
Sad because it was obviously psychologically purging for a failed parent. It won’t fix the problem. And if they pull stunts like this in public, life at home is probably a lot more severe.

Anyone else agree that concord completely ruined the intersections at Cowell and San Miguel and also cowell, Galindo, and monument?

Bomber May 7, 2023 - 11:11 AM - 11:11 AM

Totally agree! Don’t know what the city was thinking at those two intersections. That money should’ve been spent to repair our roads.

The Fearless Spectator May 9, 2023 - 6:13 PM - 6:13 PM

Finally, a very minor amount of reporting from KTVU on that guy that was beaten up in the Concord Costco parking lot mid-day on Sunday.
The bad guy fled the scene and no announcement of an arrest has been made.
KTVU provided a detailed, specific, excellent description of the criminal:
“Gray scraggly beard driving a White Toyota.”

The Fearless Spectator May 10, 2023 - 10:08 PM - 10:08 PM

Becton refuses to file charges. The lack of description tells this story. Groundhog Day.

Dr. Jellyfinger May 11, 2023 - 7:51 AM - 7:51 AM

Wow! that KTVU description describes my brother perfectly… well, except for the beard and gray hair… plus he doesn’t live near Concord or belong to Costco. He does have a white Toyota tho, but he was at home all day Sunday. Other than that, it all adds up.

I enjoyed that…..thanks. I rode the Skunk in Fort Bragg a couple of weeks ago. Fun stuff.

nytemuvr May 11, 2023 - 4:45 PM - 4:45 PM

@CYN.…..I rode it about 60 years ago, it was fun stuff then too.

Cyn May 11, 2023 - 6:12 PM - 6:12 PM

@Nytemuvr
Probably a lot longer ride for you back then. We traveled 3.5 miles, stopped for approx. 30 minutes and then backed up for 3.5 miles. A little over an hour. Couldn’t travel to Willits from Ft. Bragg due to a tunnel collapse. I’m guessing that’s the trip you got to make 60 years ago?

nytemuvr May 11, 2023 - 9:25 PM - 9:25 PM

@CYN….It seemed longer but I was just a whippersnapper, memory is getting iffy lately.

The Fearless Spectator May 11, 2023 - 6:04 PM - 6:04 PM

Did you ride the longer tour from Willits or the shorter one from Fort Bragg? We’ll be up there shortly so any advice you have will be most appreciated. Thank you.

Cyn May 11, 2023 - 7:43 PM - 7:43 PM

@The Fearless Spectator
We were staying in Fort Bragg and that’s where we rode. 7 miles roundtrip with a stop for people to get off, walk around, take photos, get some snacks, and even Skunk beer…….a little over an hour. The ride out of Willits is over two hours….haven’t done that one. You used to be able to go from Willits to Fort Bragg and vice versa but a tunnel collapse stopped that. It’s still a fun ride, and I highly recommend buying the Skunk bucket of popcorn…….free refills during the ride and the bucket (comlete with handle and lid) makes a terrific souvenir.
