The pedestrian killed by a vehicle Monday afternoon in Walnut Creek has been identified by the Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office.

Cornelio Tovar Sanchez, 54, of Antioch, died after a vehicle jumped a curb at around 1:21 p.m. on Ygnacio Valley Road east of Lennon Lane.

Walnut Creek police said Sanchez was conscious when they arrived but had significant injuries. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Police said it appeared the car drifted to the right on Ygnacio Valley, hopped the curb and hit the man while he was doing maintenance at the location.

Was he a maintenance employee or was he a pedestrian just out there fixing a sprinkler?

You must be proud of yourself by asking that question.

I ask because that enters into the possible criminal charges and sentencing. By way of comparison, the woman who ran over a school crossing guard in Lafayette was charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and got probation. Generally you can look at other cases that are similar in nature to see how this one might play out.

Yeah I am sure that’s why you asked.

Yes, Pap Smurf, I’m sure you know the real reason I asked. Please do share.

Apparently I upset some people. So, first let me say this was a tragic event. No one deserves to get mowed down like that, and I’m sure his family is suffering. So, condolences to the bereaved. Second, considering how other “death by vehicle” cases have been handled in this county, unless the driver was impaired (drugs and/or alcohol) it is unlikely that they will be charged with anything serious. As I pointed out, the woman in Lafayette who ran over a crossing guard was charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and got probation. Thirdly, whether this man was an employee performing a job or whether he was pedestrian who stopped to fix a sprinkler will factor into liability. If he was an employee, there will be questions about whether adequate precautions were taken (high viz clothing, cones on the road to divert traffic away from work area, etc..) and his employer will certainly be liable for damages to the family. If this was a pedestrian acting on his own volition, then the only option would be to go after the driver for damages. None of my comments had anything to do with the victim, and the fact that so many of your took it that way is puzzling.

Yeah like what did that rich kid get for killing the man and his child at Oak Grove and Treat? Nada as I recall. The driving while rich and stupid killer was moved away by his parents wasn’t he?

He went to jail and did time. Not enough time but he was prosecuted.

Damn. RIP homie.

It says he was a maintenance worker. Does anyone know if he worked for the city? If so, I’m sure there will be a big payout for having been killed on the job. If he was independent, hopefully, the driver has a lot of liability insurance.

Brightview does maintenance on YV. Work they do there is super dangerous, especially on the medians with no traffic control.

It does not matter if he was a maintenance worker or not, a person lost his life.
