Walnut Creek Police on Wednesday presented the case from Sunday’s hit-and-run accident to the District Attorney’s office, and the DA filed significant charges against a 33-year-old man from Vallejo, Jose Chavez. Chavez is charged with two counts each of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing serious bodily injury, hit and run causing serious bodily injury or death, and an enhancement for inflicting great bodily injury or death during the commission of a felony. Chavez remains in the Contra Costa County Jail with bail set at $260,000.
The charges stem from an incident on Sunday, June 2, prior to the regular opening of the Farmers Market in downtown Walnut Creek. Around 5:15 that morning, Walnut Creek Police received a call of a vehicle versus pedestrian accident in the area of Locust St. near Cole Avenue. When officers arrived on scene, they located the two people who had been struck by an SUV and sustained major injuries. They were transported to the hospital, where they remain in critical condition.
The suspect vehicle was located by an officer, and Chavez was arrested at the scene. This case continues to be under investigation, and the names of the victims are not being released at this time.

” during the Commission of a felony” what felony? Jose Chavez, your a POS.
He is being charged with four felonies. DUI causing serious bodily injury–2 counts, and hit and run causing serious bodily injury or death–2 counts.
Drunk at 5am? wth.
Takes body one hour to metabolize one ounce of alcohol.
.
Charged and convicted of same in this county, . . . . . . not likely.
I don’t understand anyone who drinks and drives. Hope the victims survive.
They should change it to an automatic murder charge if you kill someone while drunk driving. People KNOW what can happen and choose to be irresponsible, KNOWING they can very well kill someone.
Another senseless and totally preventable tragedy. Throw the book at him.
Seems to be another screwed up individual. I used to have a little compassion for such people…. as they were always out there. But what is scary is that they are everywhere now!
I think a big percentage of the population now is dysfunctional and irresponsible. Where this is going to lead society and the social fabric of our communities really concerns me!
I think some of these ”dysfunctional and irresponsible” should be back in jail. Seems 90% of the time when something like this or other crimes occur the perp has been arrested multiple times. Why are they out on the streets?
I think about this every day.
Where does it lead when a good percentage of the population have no conscience.
I could have a little compassion for him, just a bit….. but he did not stay at the scene, he drove away with those people laying there critically injured.
I’d leave a rope in his cell.
DUI could also be a charge for driving under the influence of a drug (e.g. meth, Marijuana, etc.
There was another DUI incident at 2 am on Buena Vista Avenue in Walnut Creek June 6th. The guy struck one car at the corner of San Luis & then kept on going a few more blocks until he crashed a parked car near Buena Vista at Alvarado. That stopped him and finally a few police cars showed up.
