Congressman DeSaulnier Issues Statement On Trump Administration “Gutting The Department Of Education”

Congressman Mark DeSaulnier (CA-10) made the following statement after the Trump Administration announced it is reducing the Department of Education’s workforce by nearly 50%.

“Education is the single-most important investment we can make in the future of our nation. President Trump’s reckless, shortsighted decision to severely cut public education and eliminate half of the workers at the Department of Education is unconscionable and puts our students and our nation at risk, all so the Trump Administration can give billions of dollars to its ultrawealthy donors through tax cuts,” said Congressman DeSaulnier. “As a senior member of the House Committee on Education and Workforce, I am angered and saddened for the tens of millions of students, including those with disabilities, children in underserved schools, and those who need help to pay for college, whose lives will be upended by the President’s misguided action. I will do everything I can to fight on their behalf as the President attempts to destroy public education in this country.”

Single biggest mistake of jimmy THE WIMP carter’ administration.
States are fully competent in administrating education.

Original G,
.
I think President Carter giving the Panama Canal away was a much bigger mistake than the creation of the Department of Education.
.
At different times “Education” has continuously existed as a Federal Agency, Bureau, Department, and Office for over 150 years, I don’t remember the exact year but I believe it began under President Grant. Under President Carter the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, which was created under President Eisenhower, was split into the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Education, and the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare was eliminated.

Maybe some states are competent. NOT California. Test scores here are near the bottom nationally. I’ve heard more about changing mascot names at schools than improving test scores. What does the school superintendent do in Sacramento?

Three greatest detriments to education in CA,
democrats, tenure and teachers union.

Effective Education. Unfortunately, the congressman seldom has any measurable accomplishments for his views. It’s mostly just a narrative with attitude.

Please Mark, sit this one out. First, good on them removing the federal payroll chaff, yes, worthless employees. Should’ve happened years ago. Second, I suspect few giving a flying clap what you think. I do wonder, are you angered because the intent is to put the responsibility of education back on each state (where it should be), and you know that in this state, and you can see the quality of the California education department? Perhaps you and cortez can take up a meaningful discussion.

To create a huge vacuum where matter and people
used to exist is almost childlike in it’s optimism
and disregard of consequences.
Something we will have to get used too until
It’s too much for even the craven to bear.

Blah blah blah there said the same thing you did…

Marky’s defense is the promotion of a profound failure.

Nothing throwing good money after bad.

Tell us if you can, Mr De Saulnier, the primary cause(s) of the dive-bombing failure of the entire education system from USA being in the TOP 5% internationally, and California specifically going from the very top to the very bottom state~~~ from the day Carter pulled it out of HEW and gave Education its very own Department and its very own Billions and Billions of $$$ annually.

Beginning right then, the new Department, the Teacher’s Unions, the Univ’s began to be taken over by the FAR Left! (think Angela Davis, et al)

Between 1980 and 1990 there were FIVE Secretaries of the D.O.Ed. FIVE!

They held a Conference including all 5 in 1991, in an attempt to determine why student achievement was going downhill so rapidly. Of the 5… the ONLY thing they agreed on was THAT fact. Education in American public schools was in the toilet…and swirling.
It was Lack of Money,
It was old Schools,
It was Lack of student testing
it was Desegregation,
it was Lack of Faith,
it was Lack of School Choice,
it was Student Hunger,
it was Uninvolved Parents/.
………. But it was never THEM or the UNIONS, or Poorly Prepared Un-tested TEACHERS… or…..

So please, Mr.D…..?

Mark,

I 100% agree and you know me, the pro gun one. I really need to be involved in this one. I will send you an email.

I can tell you many times I contacted them to assist with my disabled daughter and many other disabled children. We brought together information of fraud happening all through the state which ultimately created the sase system. This takes away parental power in a major way and no way to control when there are big problems with compliance in the state. We cannot just get rid of this, if you need a voice I will volunteer and bring you my previous boss as well from one of the districts and a forensic accountant who can testify. Without them so much will get out of control. I even went to the DA and some hit the grand jury but nothing came of those. In combo with the FBI they put together the report and assigned the auditors and compliance departments starting at the US down. If people like me could make money doing this so we could continue much more could be controlled when there is problems. Without those who get paid for oversight we will be on major problems.

Question to AI: Which state pays the most federal taxes?

“… California was, by far, the biggest “donor state” in 2022. The Rockefeller Institute dataset shows that California and its residents and businesses paid $692 billion in taxes to the federal government in 2022 and received $609 billion in federal funding.”

We do not need the FED GOVT to dictate how we use California taxes that are sent to DC and then re-distributed back to CA with DC rules and regs telling us how we can spend the money!

37 States receive MORE money [back] than they send in. CA and 12 others are OVER TAXED to supplement the other 37.

What we would like to see is California spending its own taxes on its own students. SASE is an agreement between CA DOE and WestEd…. We can provide MORE funds to Special ED and disabled and lower income students if we are not giving $80-Billion-Plus to other states.

In 2021-22, California ranked 18th in per-pupil spending among states, including Washington, DC, but drops to 34th when labor costs are factored in. We pay our Teachers and Janitors more than just about anywhere else, but education standards lack far behind… and then send what’s left to pay for education in other states.
It’s almost like generational welfare…to Other States that could stand firmer on their own two feet if they absolutely had to.

Laney, I fully understand how you feel (please believe me, I do know) about skin-of-the-teeth funding for special Ed…. But you simply cannot depend on those who are slurping the cream off the top, to tell you the truth about the bottom line.🤗

Shut up, Mark. This is what we voted for. Hopefully they destroy teacher’s unions too.

Please go away Mark. Education is not the responsibility of the Federal Government, and the Department of Education should be eliminated and the responsibility go fully to state and local government where it belongs. The great President Reagan tried to do it; hopefully President Trump will get it done.

I’m confused as to why politicians aren’t understanding the moment and how people are tired of the obvious falsehoods they put out in statements like this. He can disagree with Trump’s plan, but it’s very clear the administration is trying to dismantle the Department of Education to help the tens of millions of students. If the congressman cared so much, he’d stop spending his time making empty statements and come up with better ideas than the policies he has supported for decades that have clearly failed.

Education is the single-most important investment
we can make in the future of our nation.”
.
Pat Brown 32nd Governor of California 1959 – 1967 had the right idea,
the best possible education for every CA child. He realized educated
and prepared individuals were able to make a living independent of
government aid programs.
.
Level of education or lack there of has an effect on prison populations.
Governor Brown understood educated citizens are more likely to
become productive members of society.
Historically California prisons were repositories of state’s educational
failures ended up. Until state legislature started putting convicted felons
back out on our streets.
.
2023 – 2024 school year statewide there were 44,859 dropouts.
In a decade that’s 448,590.

*
That is quite a claim! How will the State of California taking charge of education in our state “upend” the lives of all these kids? You did not mention “how” or are you just assuming that because the state is run by Democrats?
*
Trump is attempting to “destroy public education in this country” Really?!!!
Who is he, Doctor Evil?
*
You sir, are full of bovine excrement.

Yet, schools have enough money to change their mascots ……

we need less administrator telling teacher what to do and let teacher teach.

Mark has done zero for his constituents so his opinion means squat.

I wish Mark D would get permanent laryngitis. ( my polite way of saying shut up!)
….I think the Dept of Education has dorel anything to improve education in the country.

Not quite the doomsday scenario that Mark describes.

Nothing hurt this generation of kids more than the lock-downs and coerced vaccines. The amount of children with learning disabilities is staggering.

Reality – Mark is reading the 100% all negative, non-supportive comments here and he doesn’t give one bit of a care. His voting base consists of emotionally brainwashed, regurgitating parrots of whatever they are fed via MSNBC. “Constitutional Crisis” types. They are uneducated, know nothing of the Constitution, economics, nor civics. All laughs, all day long. I think the last phrase was “Political Puppet Show” describing the last stand of the democrats.

Mark knows (they all do) that there is a new America brewing, one where we no longer tolerate “mediocre”. His base will continue to shrink, then disappear.

Game over.

As a multi-decade teacher.. I’M SO THANKFUL HE”S DOING THIS! The Federal DOE is a waste of money. They make up 90% of the rules that cost money and give the states 10% of their budgets. It is a place of kickbacks and unelected administration. Use all the money, time and effort to hire and retain good teachers. Folks.. yes, there are bad teachers out there.. but there are MANY more bad administrators out there. “if you can’t teach, become is a principal.” So thankful the Federal DOE is being gutted and stop the waste and fraud of all the administrators that fill that building

17

Thank you for your insightful comment.

Let teachers teach! Great concept! Thank you.

Oh, Mark, here you go again. More fearmongering from the insane left! He’s chopping the department at the national level and returning control to the individual states. Not a bad idea at all since we are paying the most for the lowest-performing students! Results don’t matter, do they?

And he’s not doing this to “give billions of dollars to its ultrawealthy donors through tax cuts.” He plans
to balance the budget (I know – you’ve never seen such a thing) and get to the point where most of the middle class will be tax-free. He has said that very clearly. And, unlike the career politicians on the left, who routinely spew the same thing but never intend on following through, Trump does what he says! Keep it up, Mark. We want the democrats to keep this behaviour going. The midterms are going to be so cool this time around!! You go, Mark! Keep hating!

What’s he worried about?
They have guys giving exam answers to Air Traffic Control students of color.
That’s a Democrats dream……..
