Police in Walnut Creek are investigating a fatal collision that occurred early Saturday morning.

Police responded to Ygnacio Valley Road between North Main Street and North California Boulevard at about 2:40 a.m., according to Lt. Holley Connors, the Walnut Creek Police Department’s public information officer.

Connors said the collision involved a Tesla that was driving eastbound, but declined to release further details until the victim’s next of kin was notified. She said further updates would be provided Saturday evening.

It was a solo vehicle accident. The car went head on into a tree, caught fire, the driver was stuck inside the car and died.

Another local blog posted a bit more info than what was posted here. I linked to it, but I doubt that post will get approved with it being a competing site.

I’m wondering if the driver would have fared better in a conventional internal combustion car. A Tesla has four strikes. 1) It has extraordinary acceleration. 2) It is an extremely heavy car with all of the batteries which makes it harder to slow down or to steer away from a hazard. 3) A Tesla frunk is empty space. That tree sliced the car in half up into the passenger compartment. 4) That slice into the passenger compartment seems to have caused the batteries to short out. That starts a fire and also instantly disables the electronic door locks, trapping passengers inside. I’m going to call if four strikes rather than five as I thought Teslas had a safety battery in the right rear of the frunk that allows the door locks to work. It’s possible the damage from the tree also knocked out the safety battery.

While heading east,a simple seat belt and he would have been able to get out.No pic of the driver needed, they are the “smarter than the man” type.Nobody’s going to tell them what to do.

Got caught up in the detour trying to get on to 24 west but was blocked N Main. Slight delay. Wondered what had happened.

How about s possible medical emergency?? Or poss. fell asleep at the wheel coming from work??? Or just a Tesla doing was a tesla can do??? Probably didn’t cross your mind. This was my family member. People are so effin insensitive!!!!

There was a similar accident a year or so ago on ygnacio by buttercup, she hit a utility pole and knocked it over and killed the young female driver. It was early morning hours also, sounds like alcohol involved, it’s the dui’s not a tesla out of control!

If fate finds you driving Bay Area roads at 2:40 am,
it’s safe to assume everyone you see is trying to kill you.

Unfortunately, I was the one who saw and reported the crash. I couldn’t tell what happened to cause him to veer into the tree. There were no other cars or obstructions on the road. I was waiting to turn left from N. California to Ygnacio Valley Rd when he went by and I heard the high impact crash to my right @100 feet down the road and immediately called it in and then tried to smash a window to help get him out. Another person pulled up and tried to get him out, too, but the door wouldn’t open and he was jammed in pretty good. I don’t think he was conscious. First responders got there within minutes but couldn’t get him out on time. So sad.

Thank you for stopping and for trying to help!!! So sad!!
