On Wednesday, April 30th, 2025, at approximately 12:18 a.m., officers assigned to the California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Contra Costa Area office responded to a broadcast of a wrong-way driver traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 680 (I-680), south of Lake Herman Road, in Solano County. The vehicle, described as a dark-colored Toyota RAV4, was initially reported heading toward the Contra Costa Area. Multiple subsequent callers reported the same vehicle at various locations already within the Contra Costa Area on I-680.
As officers were responding and attempting to intercept, the Toyota crashed head-on with a white Dodge Challenger on the transition ramp of eastbound State Route 24 (SR-24) to northbound I-680 . The crash resulted in major damage to both vehicles. Tragically, the driver of the Dodge sustained fatal injuries during the crash and was pronounced deceased on scene. Consulting an experienced accident attorney can help victims and their families understand their legal rights. This is especially important for those injured while driving a rental, as liability and insurance coverage can become complex.
The driver of the Toyota sustained major injuries and was later transported to the hospital for treatment. While on scene, officers conducted a DUI investigation and determined the driver to be driving under the influence (DUI). The driver was subsequently arrested and will be booked on felony charges of DUI and vehicular manslaughter once medically cleared, and the victims can get help from sites like theobrienfirm.com for injuries as well. What is there to investigate!? It’s open and shut!
What needs to be investigated is why police presence is very much absent from traffic enforcement. I frequently see people running through a red light, and I do not mean when is going from yellow to red. I have also seen, many many times, how drivers will drive on the wrong side of the road — coming close to having a head-on collision — in order to pass another car.
If this is an illegal, he or she should be made to complete the whole sentence instead of a fraction of it. This is another case of an illegal given special treatment: https://www.foxla.com/news/undocumented-immigrant-orange-county-teens-killed-early-release
Dang, you’re super excited to talk about illegals!
signs point to it as they don’t say the perps name. and no one is excited about talking about someones death
Throw the book at ’em! Name? Picture? better not be out on bail!
just how plastered do you have to be to not notice driving the wrong way from Lake Herman road to the junction at 24/680????? you crossed the bridge the opposite direction???? went thru the toll booth backwards???? and finally stopped unfortunately at the expense of another human being…. what a stupid useless son of a b!t@h.
I have to agree, how do you not notice as soon as someone is coming towards you? Then you pull over and call a Taxi or Uber and go and get your car the next day when you are sober. Waiting for the rest of the story. Too bad the wrong person died!
Let’s say you see them coming and they are 1/4 mile away. You are both going 70 mph.
You notice the headlights in the distance and think what is that? 1 sec.
You process this for another 2 or 3 sec. “Are those lights on the frontage road?”
You formulate a plan 2-3 sec. “Dude is going the wrong way! I need to get over.
Bang, you are dead! Under this scenario, you only have 6.5 seconds to avoid the oncoming vehicle. If either of you are going faster, then you have less time. If you are plastered then it will take longer to process everything.
My heart goes out to the victim and the families. The survivor should get a nice, long stay in Jail.
agreed, 70+70 is 140mph….that’s 102 feet per second each car. sad
this guy got hit because thats a curved transition and the guy that got hit was it the fast lane against the wall and didnt see the guy till they were 1 car length apart,he didnt even have time to be scared or react,it was over.He doesn’t know he’s gone.
He wasnt drunk,it was worse than that.
So what was it, could you let us know.
The cop was confused because the guy was acting so loopy and would not stop talking pointlessly. After they gave him some FST’s and then put then cuffs on him,he protested and said they never tried any FST’s on him..(field sobriety tests). The cop and I both noticed he did not smell like alcohol but was very high. This article says this time he was arrested for DUI but doesnt mention alcohol and the title of this article using ” drunk” is incorrect.DUI doesnt always mean alcohol. This is a guy driving on mushrooms or LSD.He was maybe 25-30 years old.His perception of what he did and what was going on around him was greatly confused. The police told me “he’s under arrest for DUI of something”
Mushrooms or LSD would explain not noticing the surroundings. The lane markers near an off or on ramp are reflected bright red to alert wrong way drivers. Check your rear view mirrors at night.
2 weeks ago a guy in a dark colored Rav4 crashed his car through my fence and through my front yard when he veered off the road at 2AM with no explanation and got arrested for DUI.This is going to be the same person. They also told me that it may not be alcohol that he was under the influence of,They weren’t sure what this guys problem was.The description of the car and bizarreness and randomness of events sounds way too similar.
When the police report is ready(2 weeks is not enough time for lacky Concord) I will let you know the name, and by then they should say who caused this crash, they should be the same person.
And sadly, once again the innocent driver dies.
If I had been mowing my lawn like I had planned (yes I mow at 2 am)I would not be here.
Now I need to install parking poles that you put deep into the ground to stop cars.and maybe a few large boulders.Next time it will wreck their car.The people that put up a small wooden fence at Clayton and Cape Cod way to comply with Concords 3 ft fence law and to stop cars from crashing into their house did not do anything to stop another car from going into their house like has happened twice before.Get poles.
Alcohol is a great solvent it removes,
relationships
families
friends
marriages
doors
jobs
lives . . . . . . . .
.
person with alcohol dependency has to hit a bottom,
a point at which they become sick-n-tired of being sick-n-tired
and come to the realization they never want to be that way again.
What if CALTRANS puts one-way spike strips on the exit ramps. The wrong way drivers get 4 flat tires before making it to the highway and stops (hopefully).
If you are too stupid to notice you are going the wrong way on the freeway chances are you are too stupid to notice you are driving on rims.
