President Donald Trump announced Sunday he is directing federal authorities to reopen the famous prison at Alcatraz Island off the coast of San Francisco that has been shuttered for more than 60 years. Trump, posting on the social media platform he founded, Truth Social, said he is “directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ, to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders.”
U.S. Penitentiary Alcatraz closed in 1963 after opening 29 years earlier on the island in San Francisco Bay. Known as “The Rock,” and made famous to future generations by a 1996 movie with the same name, some of the famous criminals of their time like Al Capone were housed there during the prison’s operation. After its closure and a period of occupation by American Indians, Alcatraz has since turned into a tourist attraction with more than a million visitors a year to the public museum about the history of the island and its prison, according to the National Park Service. Trump did not get into specifics in his social media post about how and when Alcatraz can host prisoners again rather than tourists, but said it “will serve as a symbol of Law, Order, and JUSTICE.” The Federal Bureau of Prisons, one of the agencies Trump said he is directing to reopen Alcatraz, notes on its website that the closure 60-plus years ago was because of high costs. Alcatraz’s daily costs were nearly three times as much as any other federal prison because of the necessity to ship everything there by boat, including nearly a million gallons of water barged to the island each week, according to the Bureau of Prisons.

My father took me and my sister there for a “tour” of the prison when we were young. The minute we entered the building I became nauseated and overcome with chills. The feeling did not leave me until we exited the facility.

I watched that movie “The Rock” and Sean Connery showed us that there is already a roller coaster ride beneath the prison and he also showed us the only means of escape thru an underwater passage way and the giant crankshaft of an enormous furnace, so I think we can dismantle all that & clean up the VX residue and get serious (if necessary) about upgrading this ancient relic into a dandy federal penitentiary for only a few billion dollars more than new practical construction in a desert would cost.
We could rename it “Prison of America” and rename the SF Bay “Bay of America!”

it was closed because you could take a regular ole spoon and dig thru concrete in mere minutes.It could never be reused unless demolished and rebuilt.
Well feces would be huge part of the issue. Back in the day they simply dumped the sewage into the bay. Today its ground up into slurry and stored in holding tanks to be transported off the island, kinda like giant porta potty. That’s why there are limited toilet facilities there today. Now imagine the cost, practicality and security risk of that for 100s if not 1000s of inmates and guards. And that’s just the waste. The island also lacks direct freshwater connections. The topography of the bay makes it impossible. Here’s an idea, try pooping and peeing into a tank for a month and paying to cart it away, let us all know how cheap that runs ya. Someone is flinging s**t around with this idea, but it isn’t anyone posting here.

Part of the reason for closure was cost of transporting goods, staff and inmates by boat.
Also rebuilding due to deterioration of structure would cost more than building a new facility elsewhere.
