The East Bay Municipal Utility District is proposing rate increases for drinking water and wastewater as part of a $3.2 billion budget for fiscal years 2025–2027. If approved, water rates would rise 6.5% each year, and wastewater rates would increase 8.5%. For a typical household using 125 gallons daily, water bills would go up about $3.77 per month in year one and $4.30 in year two. Wastewater charges would rise by about $2.31 per month. The budget includes $1.2 billion for water system upgrades and $171 million for wastewater improvements over the next two years. A public hearing is scheduled for June 10 at 1:15 p.m. More details are available at ebmud.com/rates.

How do they get away with this? It’s OUR water already on this earth. They come in and treat it with chemicals and overcharge for it. It’s like charging to breathe our air. Should be against the law.

Aunt Barbara…don’t give them any ideas.
Actually, now that I think of it… I think they already charge us for the air…and give it to EPA.

Gee, I notice that I use the same number of gallons each month. It also seems a bit much for a single person. So what does the meter reader doing? The utility has some splainin’ to do!

This how they make thier money, the old fashion”read your meter” that all other utilities have stopped and use smart meters. This purely to keep these high paid slow workers in work, and it justifies a high water bill.SCAM…..Im going to dig a well.

You can back out of Smart Meters… call the utility and tell them you want a meter back – that way you can monitor your usage if you would like… there was a class action suit that removed any charging for having a meter vs smart Meter

I would think the gallons would fluctuate a lot more. It’s like they’ve got tiers instead. I’ll have to see if they explain it online.
.
As for smart meters, just like AI, the general public is clueless. They aren’t watching you all day. They just ping your smart meter ever couple of days to download usage. That part is innocuous. It’s the rates they are charging that are crazy because they should be trying to keep rates down. Instead they serve their investors as they’re customers.
.
And we know the water utility should have kept improvements up over the years (when it cost less to do so) and instead went lax.

Look at the parking lot and see the cars these guys drive that work there.Everyone working there makes 6 figures.

They have to continuously raise their rates to offset theose huge salaries and fat pension plans. Many staff are still working from home.

I don’t know what the “rates” are at EBMUD… but…
CCWD now charges a minimum of $65.13 every second month… JUST to be connected to the pipe at the street… AND they charge that whether you use a drop of water or not!!! That “fee” goes up several times a year. THEN, if you want to actually USE any water…that’s extra (actually the water is fairly cheap…it’s the salaries and Board Pay that’ll sink ya.
Try to guess their “read” dates in order to control your own usage… LOL… and good luck. This month 58 days, next read, 61 days, next read 59 days, next ……………

Don’t get me started again on the sporadic bully-billing from PG&E! They also have a “use any or not” fee, but it’s a reasonable minimum amount… unlike their abusive usage rates.

Ever notice that the bill always shows you used more this year than the same period last year?
