Shout out to Governor Newsom for another great idea to help cut the budget deficit by closing another prison. Cutting people’s access to preventative heakthcare costs more in the long run. It leads to more emergency room visits that we all cover.
So it’s not really a cut to spending. Its a guarantee that more money will be spent in the long run.
Maybe avoid the costly lack of due process with the deportations? Or maybe fire all of DOGE since they have no idea what they are doing. Or don’t have the military birthday parade? That would actually save money.

Regarding the MDUSD vs MDEA negotiations. . .
Currently they’re at impasse, deadlock, progress is not being made, next step is mediation. MDEA has an enormous list of requests, MDUSD will not discuss. I’m not defending MDUSD, but this list is overwhelming. Here’s an idea–MDEA surveys teachers to list their top 3 concerns, puts all effort into negotiating for these, tables the rest. I’m confident that both sides could reach an agreement and move forward.
I am a parent of children in MDUSD and will defend MDUSD. The list of ‘demands’ from the little group at MDEA is ridiculous. You are already failing our kids; check test scores, attendance issues and more … and yet you have the audacity to ask for a raise and more prep periods? You are like our gas tax, we give and give and give, yet still see no real benefits-my kids excel because of the effort we put in with them. I don’t want the teacher to be a babysitter, though for many of them that is all they do, I want them to TEACH a subject!
MDEA just redid their contract a couple of years ago, and now they want to change it again! They want to change 23 of the 29 current articles and add 4 more, for a total of over 200 changes! They want to add social justice crap and surprise surprise, they want more money again. I am still waiting for them to do what they said they would do last set of demands.
My favorite (sarcasm) is the “Racially Just Professional Evaluation Process” to get away from the white dominant norms. I am so sick and tired of these people who are stuck in this part of their life. I feel bad for them that all they can see is white dominance and they use that as an excuse for why they are where they are in life. Suck it up! I have a solution to the fear porners that are mostly targeting Walmart….Anyone ever notice the quality of China stuff in Walmart is so poor,they beg you to buy a”protection plan” on anything over $20,and when you dont you wish you had.It’s like buying power tools from Harbor Freight,you know it’s never gonna last.Don’t shop at Walmart.Problem solved.
I couldn’t care less about Walmart and their customers. Went there once and never returned. However, as a photographer, I DO care about the price of camera accessories – lights, flash units, screens, supports, tripods, lenses software, etc. Other than the cameras, most camera “stuff” is made in China. Almost everything I bought over the last year (90-95%) is more expensive post-tariff than they were when I bought them.
Most clothing is made in China, India, Vietnam and a handful of other countries. Clothing prices are going up as well. So are utility prices (at least in Oregon and California). So are prices for kitchenware. And furniture.
I worked in manufacturing early in my career and tariffs aren’t the way to bring manufacturing back to the USA. We need to build up infrastructure (factories), supply chains, manufacturing machinery, and most importantly people who can fill the jobs. I do not see a population with the necessary expertise in purchasing, production and material planning, design, engineering, quality control and assurance, warehouse management. These are all good non-college jobs, but they still require knowledge, expertise and experience.

So most decent video and camera and lenses are subject to either the Japanese or Australian tariffs. Manfrotto makes good tripods. They are Italian and subject to tariffs. Most companies that make batteries, chargers, drones, video lights, flash units, gimbals, sliders, backdrop frames, light and microphone stands are Chinese.
I get my photographic doodads the same places most photographers and videographers get their stuff: Amazon, and two online American photo\video stores.
