Details are thin, but we are hearing scattered reports regarding a possible mass “injury” incident on the football field at DVC, in Pleasant Hill. Apparently, a tree fell onto a group of people who are attending a graduation. At least five people are injured, no fatalities and nobody is trapped.
UPDATE from DVC: Earlier this evening at approximately 6:54 p.m. toward the end of the Diablo Valley College commencement ceremony, a tree adjacent to the football field fell. Bystanders who were watching the commencement ceremony were hit by the tree. Approximately 12 people were injured. Two people were transported to local hospitals for treatment. EMT and police services were on site per DVC’s standard event protocols, and additional emergency services arrived within minutes to treat the injured individuals. Following the emergency response, DVC’s maintenance and operations team began removing the tree. An evaluation of the circumstances surrounding this incident will take place in the days to come. The safety of our students and visitors to our campus is our top priority. We deeply regret that this incident occurred during this milestone occasion. We congratulate all of our graduates and hope they are able to celebrate with their loved ones this evening.

If a tree falls on graduates does it make a sound?
I was there and said the same thing🤣🤣🤣 I didn’t hear it…
😂😂 Even the tree didnt want to see anyone graduate.
and it was so terrible that bystanders were helping hold the tree up and getting the people stuck around the tree out. DVC employees were just standing around and flustered instead of getting the police involved in a timely manner. The campus should be required to routine maintenance on their trees, this specific tree had dry root rot.
First, they removed the tree– before an arborist (or an injured party’s attorney) could evaluate its condition and causes.
Then, they had the “Director of Marketing” give the formal statement.
The Director of Marketing? Really? —- No faults to Ms Howard, but somehow…when a dozen people are injured, sending your Marketing guru to say “oops.” just seems shoddy to me.
I see some big law suits coming primarily due to the “deferred maintenance” that schools, cities, counties are so quick to postpone. The tree obviously had rot of some kind and should have been removed long ago ….. there are plenty of examples of this in WC specifically.
If the tree fell in a natural fashion normal people should have had plenty of time to get out of the way, and the timing of such a “natural” occurrence (while surrounded by people) could not have been worse.
Unless these 12 injured were all afflicted with such low reaction time they’d be likely to be run over by a steamroller or trampled by tortoises….I believe there are details not being reported.
I wonder if any graduates had climbed up the old rotted tree for a better view?
Nah! College graduates are too smart than to have done that.
I was there, on of the ones that got hit by the tree trust me the tree did NOT take its time to fall. All you could hear was the tree snap then the weight of it on your head and back.
The woman looking over my shoulder just informed me that the injured were not students, only visitors watching the graduation and that it was a windy day….
so, never mind.
My sister was also there and was one of the ones taken to the hospital, maybe wait on commenting
Look up ! I already corrected my original post at 8:37 AM.
She was a student. Smh
You don’t need to correct anything for the keyboard police they can deal with it!
She was a student.
Yes, she was a student… she was a student.
I wish her a speedy recovery.
But this tragedy is over & it’s time to leaf it behind us.
I for one intend to log off now and branch out to explore other interests that do not involve poorly managed arboriculture.Smh
