Just when you thought Concord might finally be caffeinated enough, Starbucks is back at it again, this time with plans to build yet another location, right across the street from the (somewhat) recently opened Dutch Bros. Because nothing screams “strategic planning” like a coffee turf war at the corner of Clayton and Bailey.
Recently, the Concord Design Review Board gave a thumbs-up to a proposal for a 2,200-square-foot Starbucks drive-thru with an outdoor patio at 4691 Clayton Road. If approved by the Planning Commission, this will be the city’s 10th Starbucks. That’s right, 10. At this point, we may need a separate zoning category for espresso density. The new location will take over a 0.69-acre site, with drive-thru access, a smattering of shrubs to shield your eyes from car headlights, and a few bicycle racks. The project was revised after feedback from the city, with tweaks including hidden downspouts, motion-sensor lights for the trash enclosure, and landscaping tall enough to block the glare of drive-thru brake lights. The monument sign has also been repositioned so you can safely read it while desperately trying to merge with Dutch Bros traffic. According to the plans, it appears the building that currently stands at Clayton and Bailey will be demolished.
While there’s no official construction timeline, one thing’s for sure: Clayton Road is rapidly becoming the Caffeine Corridor of Concord. Within a few miles, you’ll soon be able to choose from Starbucks (Clayton & Bailey), Dutch Bros., Starbucks (Clayton & Treat), Starbucks (Clayton & Denkinger, Safeway), Peet’s, Dunkin’, Starbucks (Clayton & Kirker) and Starbucks (Clayton & Kirker, Safeway). And just in case you think we’re joking (which we only do on April 1), here’s a link to the staff report.

No! Too many accidents at that intersection. Yesterday, around noon, a suv ( it made protected left turn ) hit a black Honda civic (it ran a red light).
Mr. Mayor, there is no way I would enjoy a cup of Starbucks coffee nearly as much as I enjoy your narrative.
It’s not that I dislike their coffee, but I am unwilling to buy my coffee by the cup.
Hmm, this is very unusual, a starbucks plan that might actually work.
An Cowellian is correct.
If you sneeze in Concord you’ll get it on a Starbucks … .enough!
I was going to say there’s way too many starbucks! I’ve actually stopped going to them as have several friends because her coffee really is nasty. And now expensive too. I could have coffee for a week + at home for the price of one of their coffees.
Let the coffee wars begin. Why does Concord need 10 Starbucks? The coffee is trash. You can wake up everyday for a week and go to a different Starbucks and still have 3 more locations open. Thats embarrassing. I knew someone who would only drink starbucks coffee, i quit talking to him since i couldnt stand their coffee and hearing about his boring life.
0.6 miles away there is another at Denkinger and Clayton. seems stupid
…. Clayton at Treat …. the saturation of stores is as bad as SF was … now they’re closing stores in the city … crazy!
I don’t support Starbucks, their coffee ain’t that good. Don’t they have enough locations already?!!
Starbux coffee is nasty & bitter, like an ex wife.
Headline made me laugh and I have no idea what why. 👍🏽
This is so petty and stupid. Theres one like a block away lol. Coffee is cool and all but Jesus.
They will close it down after starving out Dutch bros. That’s what they did to torrefazzione in SF, open unneeded location right across the street, eventually bought them out and later shut it down again.
The high quality option of torrefazzione disappeared and all we get is mediocre Starbucks coffee.
yes I am still bitter about this.
I’m not sure if they make their employees work unreasonably long hours or mistreat them either.
I don’t think it’s going to be another drove thru.
Article says it includes a drive-thru.
Exactly how many Starbucks do we need in a 1.5-mile area? Including Safeways, we already have five!
