Contra Costa Animal Services is opening its doors Saturday for a day of free pet adoptions, activities, and community fun as part of the second-annual California Adopt-A-Pet Day, a statewide effort involving more than 150 shelters. While the pets are the main draw, the day is shaping up to be more like a block party for animal lovers. Local rescue groups like CalPaws, Contra Costa Humane Society, Rhodie’s Rescue, and Hugs for Harry will be on hand at the county shelter in Martinez with adoptable animals. There will be free dog nail trims, live dog training demos, face painting for kids, and even an ice cream truck. Pet vendors and trainers will also be around to answer questions and hand out goodies.

“Adopting a pet is not just about bringing home an animal into your family — it’s about giving them a second chance at life filled with love and care,” Contra Costa Animal Services director Ben Winkleblack said in a statement. “We’re excited to invite the community to our Adopt-A-Pet Day event on June 7th and join us for a day of fun, learning, and of course, finding a forever friend.” While the adoptions are free, a $25 fee may apply for some pets. According to the county, the shelter is currently full of animals waiting for someone to take a chance on them. People can take a look of adoptable pets at www.ccasd.org, or just come by during the event. The Contra Costa Animal Services Adopt-A-Pet Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the shelter at 4800 Imhoff Place, Martinez.

Our best cat who liked everyone and was gentle was from a shelter.
Well worth a visit.

We adopted our pup from a shelter. He was emaciated (and apparently covered in fleas when they found him). Always have loved dogs, and this boy is a joy and a half. Something so special when petting him and he lifts his head with that puppy smile. Repeating, this little guy has brought so much joy and happiness into this house. So, if you know you can take on a pup, I’d recommend.

The place on Imhoff is never honest about what’s going on with an animal, they will say anything to get you to take it.Ive had 8 years of the worst animal. They will lie and day its a senior when its young but in bad shape ,so it looks old.but its not
