Happy father’s day to all the dads out there! What is your idea of the best father’s day ever?

Are you retired or getting ready to retire? Is there something that surprises you about retirement? What are some of the things you wish you had better planned (especially pertaining to financial matters)?

great question. I am less than a couple years from planned retirement. I know there are some of our posters who are retired, and I always care to hear any wisdom they could impart.

  1. Consulting with at least five certified fee based financial planners by age 20.
  2. Have at least 6 months gross income in savings you do not touch.
  3. Max out yearly contributions to retirement savings.
  4. Starting retirement savings plan EARLY, to take advantage of compounding.
  5. Acquire a skill set that is in demand, in my case union industrial electrician

which paid a living wage.

Thanks, Original G. I will also look into finding a financial planner (or few). I haven’t consulted one before (only discussed investing with the retirement account person).

Jeff, I will be curious to hear how things go once you’re fully in retirement mode.

sounds good. For our younger readers, Original G provided very good steps to help build your portfolio in prep for retiring. Prep for retiring takes (generally) 30-40 years; it is not an overnight deal. I was fortunate that my FiL provided advice similar to OGs, which we followed (along with a lot of sacrifice, no vacations, brewed my own coffee, drank water instead of pop, beer or wine), and now I just need to reach that 6 months post birthday date.

Hubby retired just over a year ago.
Before he had been putting into the 401K, which helped tax wise.
We are able to get by pretty well on SSI alone.
You have to start transferring $$$ out of investments by certain age, …. 73?
Tax amount on all, was a bit of a surprise, … at least for us.
Now paying quarterly to easy the blow.
Did this info help?

Thanks, Roz (and everyone else who replied)! I didn’t know that you need to start taking $$$ out of your investments by a certain age, and also didn’t know that paying on a quarterly basis was an option. I’ll have to look into it.

my understanding is, your AGI determines your premiums for Medicare, and if you delay signing up for medicare, you get penalties in those premiums. gotta love government nanny state, telling you how we as free citizens have to fund our healthcare to the point of penalizing if we do not follow their mandates.

Start planning for retirement NLT age 25 and start putting $$ away & don’t touch it

Effect of compounding, URL might be of use . . . .
https://tinyurl.com/56763ctt
.
Gave new employees in our shop a one page example of compounding.
Two people get same rate of return, first one puts $2,000 a year into
retirement account and continues for 6 years then stops.
Second person starts saving $2,000 a year into retirement account
and continues until retirement.
They both end up with almost identical sums of money due to
compounding upon retirement.
.
One other thing not mentioned, my former employer would once
or twice a year invite in retirement planners or investment firms.
If you are in HR at your company do the same thing.
.
Retirement is one of the few things in life,
YOU NEED TO GET RIGHT ! ! !

Pick your favorite. I have to choose one to tell at a funeral. Just kidding.

1)A driver picks up a fare, and he notices an accent. “Are you 3 ladies from England?”
“It’s WALES, you idiot” comes the reply.
“Oh I’m so sorry. Are you 3 whales from England?”

2) I yelled “Pig!” at a girl on a bike and she gave me the finger. Then she hit the pig. Should’ve listened.

Been awhile since I posted ‘Friday Open Road’
From an excellent website I visit daily.

Used to be you’d buy a car based on, did look like it was moving fast
while standing still, especially wagons.

All of this is excellent advice. In economics class, we do a unit on retirement. Social Security v. pensions, etc. The students are interested in it. We bring in financial advisors to guest speak and educate students. The compounding interest activity is always revealing.

If you like good things you’ll probably like this.

I did like it!
It was like a country version of “Leader of the Pack” but with oodles more musical talent & angelic voices.
