Two Bay Area state senators introduced legislation on Monday that would prohibit law enforcement officers from covering their faces during operations in California. Senate Bill 627, the No Secret Police Act, would cover all levels of law enforcement, and would also require officers’ uniforms to show their name or some other identifier. Senators Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, and Jesse Arreguin, D-Berkeley, said the legislation is a response to recent immigration raids in California and is needed to provide transparency and bolster public trust in law enforcement.
“The recent federal operations in California have created an environment of profound terror. If we want the public to trust law enforcement, we cannot allow them to behave like secret police in an authoritarian state,” Wiener said. The bill would exempt SWAT teams, medical grade masks and masks designed to protect against exposure to smoke during a state of emergency related to wildfires. Federal law enforcement officers have conducted raids in recent months, in California and around the country, while covering their faces and, at times, badges, names, and other identifying information. “They sometimes wear jackets stating ‘Police’ — effectively impersonating local law enforcement,” the senators said in a news release on Monday. The bill defines law enforcement officers as any officer of a local, state, or federal law enforcement agency, or any person acting on behalf of a local, state, or federal law enforcement agency. A violation of the bill’s prohibition is punishable as a misdemeanor.
Translation: Wiener wants to dox law enforcement personnel under the guise of transparency and put them at risk, hoping to control their behavior and gain back the authoritarian state control he preaches against but treasures so much. If he really wants to “provide transparency and bolster public trust” he can start with a list of all of his donors so that the public knows whose payroll he is on and who’s pulling his strings.
Wiener(and his supporters) is the best friend a criminal could have. He supports and enables criminals, and promotes crime in many ways.
Is Wiener going to make it illegal for his terrorist friends like ANTIFA members to wear masks?
Many Trust Law enforcement..and many do NOT trust state senators to protect citizens over their personal “Agendas”.
Wiener is one of the worst people ever elected to public office.
He shows he is bereft of all good character values whenever he speaks.
someone put a bag and tape over wieners head,i will do it for free, yes this is a threat.
@ WWTL – I know what you are proposing is a non-violent prophylactic solution to stop Wiener from spreading his left wing craziness, but they way you’ve expressed it makes it sound as if your intent is to rub him out!
Please be clear because I’d hate to see you get in any trouble for making a threat that could be misconstrued as violent.
As tempting as it would be to literally beat and pound Wiener… or strangle him, that kind of behavior would be illegal and contrary to the political process…. and messy.
Also, who would ever enforce it?the police would arrest the police?would never fly even if it did on paper and it wont.Theres no threat of harm by wearing a mask and theres no benefit from them not wearing. There is no reason other than cry babies wanting harm done to law enforcement.Lillte kids thinking this will be a law:your thumb is cold wet and lonely from it not being in your mouth for the last 2 minutes.
Federal law enforcement is exempt from state rules so nice try…. Hey Wait! maybe make a law that protesters can’t ware masks????? “Hear my voice but don’t see my face” dumb a$$
Boy did they name him right, we have masked criminals doing smash and grab all over the bay area. And of course he is worried about the police.
Wiener,
I am no legal constitutional expert but I have heard of the Supremacy Clause, not sure even IF you could pass this stupid law of the Feds would abide. They are FEDERAL! That outranks a tiny little state. Of course the leadership in this state thinks that Federal Law does not apply to them … SURPRISE it does!
You are no better than the LA council person/thing who wanted the police chief to develop a system to warn illegal aliens that ICE was in town.
You two are off your rockers!!!!
Do you realize that they wear a mask to protect themselves, their families, friends and more! Your illegals and those that support them are hunting these law enforcement personnel down at their homes and personal spaces. And you want to make it easier to be found?
When you were elected for the people, we assumed it was for legal immigrants and citizens, you might want to check your oath!
135 years ago the SCOTUS decided a case ironically from California, that Federal law enforcement is exempt from State prosecution from incidents that occur during the performance of their official duties – In re Neagle, 135 U.S. 1 (1890).
I tend to agree but it’s got to work both ways.
You want to protest, put your face on it.
Your face or the body part of your choice.
Regarding the L.A. protester that took a rubber bullet to the testicles, it’s a safe assumption his voice has been heard.
Probably took at least two rubber bullets….
I mean a two for one shot is possible but not likely.
He will probably be talking like Mickey Mouse for awhile.
So you don’t care if they are stalked because some idiot feels their emotions trump the law?
Masks are for Halloween. That goes for both cops and robbers.
When has hiding one’s identity ever brought their best behavior.
This runaway mask trend in another consequence of the Covid scam.
The leather chaps brigade strikes again.
He just wants to know which ones are the cute ones.
No self respecting gay person would ever associate with this guy.
“self respecting”? thats an oxymoron..they hate themselves and anyone that notices them.Always mad, squabbling, and the most infidelity in any relationships, and usually the only requirement in their world to start that relationship is just to be on the team, not who you are. Thier entire existence is anger that is acted out all day long.Anyone that is gay or ever knew anyone thats gay, knows it’s impossible to be around these people for any period of time without them doing something that draws attention to them in all the wrong ways. Its a mental illness ,not a lifestyle, and with that illness comes a package of unsolvable problems that the spectator has to experience at least once before walking away from that self centered narcissistic person.JMO.
Yeah those coward paid soros protesters! Hiding behind their masks! Wtf!
Protect our Law Enforcement folks Identity on Duty.
Rioters wear mask to hide Identity, … but for the wrong reason.
This is no longer the land of the free. It’s the land of laws. I love the red white and blue. I am proud to be from the United States. These Democrats are trying to ruin our country to get rich. It’s not even worth my time talking about it. To many brainwashed morons voting these idiots in. How could you honestly live in this country and think any of this is ok? The government makes the laws. The cops enforce them. Seems as though certin people want the police gone so they can have free run. This country is becoming a disgrace and an embarrassment. The Dems should be proud.
You shouldn’t use the word exposer and weiner in the same title. 🤪
( cause this joker might just do that )
… and did anyone wonder why all these protesters have their faces covered? Maybe there should be a law require them to be exposed.
antifa first ! ! ! ! ! !
It should be a federal law that masked protesting is illegal.
You are defeating your purpose by not showing who you are and that youre serious and you mean it loud and proud. Its an excuse for thieves and hoodlums and paid and fed rioters to get some work in.Oh,and trying to make a law to get cops to not wear masks will never happen.Maybe stop doing stuff that would make cops show up masked.THERE’S YOUR SOLUTION.Easy too.But not for emotional children or paid agitators.
Dumb idea, but Weiner has watched how many retail smash and grabs and hasn’t done anything about saying he’ll increase charges on those robbers wearing masks.
what’s it like to want?
The SCOTUS decided 135 years ago in the case of In re Neagle, 135 U.S. 1 (1890) – that Federal Law Enforcement officials are exempt from State prosecution from incidents that occur while preforming their official law enforcement duties. This is based on the Supremacy Clause of the US Constitution.
This law would only apply to state law enforcement who routinely do not wear face coverings.
This is a “solution” in desperate need of a problem.
In addition, California penal code section 883.10 requires all uniform peace officers to wear a badge, nameplate or other device which clearly bears on its face the name or number of the officer.
This allows the public to positively identify an officer.
Perhaps Wiener is not aware of the Penal code……….
