At its meeting on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, the Mt. Diablo Unified School District Board of Education took action to pursue a provisional appointment to fill the vacancy for Trustee Area # 4. The appointee will serve the remaining term of Trustee Cherise Khaund, who stepped down from the Board effective Monday, June 16, 2025, after accepting a position on the Walnut Creek Planning Commission. Trustee Area # 4 includes Walnut Creek, Concord, and Clayton. A map of the Trustee Areas can be found on the District’s Website. To be eligible, an applicant must be a registered voter in Trustee Area Four and cannot be an employee of the Mt. Diablo Unified School District. Additional requirements for holding office can be found in Board of Education Bylaws 9220 and 9223. The person selected to fill this vacancy will serve through the end of the term, which ends on or about December 14, 2026. To fill this position for the following term, the appointed Board Member must qualify for the ballot and run as a candidate.

To learn more and to apply, all relevant information is available on the MDUSD website. The deadline to apply is 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. Finalists will be interviewed at a Special Board of Education meeting on August 4, 2025 at 5:00 P.M. Unless a petition calling for a special election is filed with the office of the County Superintendent of Schools within 30 days of the date of the provisional appointment, the appointment shall become permanent.

Hopefully someone going into the MDUSD vacancy can be a catalyst to bring much needed reform to MDUSD in general …. it’s way too much of a clique …. for that reason unless the new candidate is a “yes-person” they may not even get in

The endless revolving door of no new ideas marches on.

Leave it vacant. Odds are too great the next person will be even worse than Cherise. Can you imagine another trustee like Nzewi? MDUSD is already a laughingstock, another liberal would be the death knell.

The MDUSD school board really needs some common sense and reform. Electing Trustee Thomas McDougall was a step in the right direction, now let’s continue the momentum.

What a Tool!, bye bye Cherise you won’t be missed.

Unfortunately, the MDUSD Board will choose the person who will fill the vacancy, so, we can expect someone who thinks just like the current board members. More of the same!!!
