The Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE) announced its intent to acquire the broadcast license for KVHS 90.5 FM from the Mt. Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD), marking a new chapter for the noncommercial educational FM station. KVHS has served the central Contra Costa County community since its founding at Clayton Valley High School in 1966.
“KVHS has a rich legacy of serving the local community and empowering young people through radio, and we are excited to be part of the next chapter in that legacy,” Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools Lynn Mackey said.
Last week, the MDUSD Board of Education unanimously approved a purchase agreement to transfer the KVHS license to CCCOE for $1. “We are thrilled to work with the Contra Costa County Office of Education on preserving the radio station,” MDUSD Superintendent Dr. Adam Clark said. “The station is in good hands.”
The transfer is pending approval by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), a process that typically takes approximately three months. In the meantime, CCCOE is working to secure a temporary home for the station’s antenna and will apply for a Special Temporary Authority (STA) from the FCC to resume over-the-air broadcasting.
Until the antenna is relocated and the STA is approved, KVHS will continue to broadcast online at kvhs.com, ensuring continued access to community content.
KVHS started as a project at Clayton Valley High School more than 50 years ago and has undergone significant change since it first began broadcasting. The initiative aligns with CCCOE’s broader goals of expanding career technical education (CTE) pathways and ensuring equitable access to innovative learning experiences across the county.
Great News! Hope they continue playing the A and B sides of Blue Cheer, Jefferson Airplane, Blue Oyster Cult, Sugar Loaf, Quick Silver Messenger, Steppen Wolf, and many more…and no more MDUSD Bored meetings.
Antenna was originally mounted to tower on roof of Music building at
Clayton Valley high school. Transmitter was housed outside door of
studio in music building.
Have discovered some really cool music on KVHS that I probably wouldn’t have discovered anywhere else…
For instance a 1972 song called “I Wish I Could” by a Dutch progressive rock band called Alquin… if you have almost 12 minutes to spare for a quick psychedelic journey..
A lot of times on the station they do not name the song playing, but they do list the last few songs to be played on their website (or Shazam probably works too)
Slasher is right, pretty listenable. 👍🏽

Shazam is a must as the album tracks go very deep. It also feels like the musical style varies depending on the hour. The variety is excellent.
Good news. I always dug the creativity even when I didn’t necessarily dig the music.
I like the tunes coming forth from KVHS, and am glad the license is being picked up by the County.
KVHS (Clayton Valley High School) has a rich history of teaching courses in broadcasting and hands on instruction of how to run a radio station.
Thanks to the CCOE for picking up the license and letting the music play on.
It’s only great news if they get back to playing music that made them what they were.
The past few yrs of KVHS music……SUCKED!!!!
Love the recent programming. Most eclectic catalog I’ve heard.
Good. Concord City Council should have bought it. They never do anything interesting. Could have created some programs connected to Concord Pavilion maybe.
I had assumed much of the ongoing value for this station came from the students. Presumably they design the programming, which people in the area seem to enjoy.
.
I’m hoping that practice will continue.
