Spirit Halloween Claims Squatter’s Rights In Former Concord Kmart For 5th Consecutive Year

Once again, the massive 90,000-square-foot former Kmart at 5298 Clayton Rd. has been taken over by Spirit Halloween for the spooky season, marking its yearly pop-up return to Concord’s retail ghost town.

The old Kmart doors closed in early 2020, and except for these annual haunting events, it’s remained vacant, amid ongoing talks for redevelopment. Retailers like Target and Harbor Freight have reportedly been eyed for permanent tenancy, though grocery restrictions and lease hurdles tied to the nearby Lucky store have stalled any deal.

Probably would have a Target or WalMart by now but Lucky(SaveMart) won’t let them.

Yup the building owners gave them that option in the contract when they went signed it. If i was Lucky Store I wouldnt want competitiors in same shopping center either. Harbor Freight may be best option, other than homeless shelter would be nice with al the homeless in Newhall park close by.

Hey, you all are forgetting about the possibility of an Olive Garden! 🫒 🤪

Hell no to the homeless shelter!

Fed Up,
.
The Concord City Council won’t approve a Walmart in Concord. Walmart has made several attempts to open a store in Concord over the last 30-35 years and each time the Concord City Council has told them “NO.”
.
Nothing is stopping Target from opening a store in this Concord shopping center, without a grocery section, except for Target itself. Target doesn’t have to have a grocery section if they were to open a store in this location, but they’ve chosen to not open a store here without a grocery section.
.
It’s pretty much an industry standard for grocery stores to be an exclusive grocery seller in a shopping center and have that provision in their contracts with the property owner. Why would or should Lucky change their contract when the change would only hurt their business? You shouldn’t be blaming Lucky, you should be placing blame on the property owner. Target is also free to buyout the lease that Lucky has with the property owner.

Who on earth is shopping at this store for Halloween stuff?!?🤦🏻‍♀️
It’s a total rip off and Amazon is kicking their butts.

If TJ Maxx was smart, they’d rent this building asap!!
They can move the TJ Maxx on Clayton Rd. to this location.
It’s a huge store and has plenty of space for parking and it won’t need to be in that trashy, dumpy parking lot with the dollar tree.
It also complies with the Lucky rule about selling food because the housewares section isn’t considered grocery.

They could even combine it as a TJ Maxx/Home Goods, like other states have done or even make it a Marshalls.

We need something permanent in this lot and this is the perfect company.

The location of the former Kmart at Clayton and Ayers is one of several locations being considered for multi housing.

Another potential location for construction of multi-housing is the parcel next to Sloate Garden Center on Kirker Pass Road.

Davilo,
.
The two locations that you mentioned are undergoing an overlay zoning change because the owners of these properties told the City of Concord that they wanted these overlay high-density zoning changes in addition to the current low-density and commercial zoning these properties currently have.
