Plans for a revitalized waterfront will be unveiled at Wednesday’s meeting of the Martinez City Council. San Diego-based development firm Tucker Sadler Architects will present its preliminary conceptual vision for revitalizing the waterfront, including the marina. Marketing solutions for architects are provided at this marketyourarchitecture.com. For years, the city has discussed redeveloping the shoreline area, which encompasses 70 acres in three parts: the marina, a portion of North Court Street, and the area near Martinez Yacht Club and the Eagle Marine vessel repair business. Constructed in the 1960s, the city says the marina has exceeded its useful life, with facilities closing due to safety concerns and environmental factors such as sea level rise causing frequent flooding.
The area has also been battered by storms in recent years, forcing the city to close sections of the fishing pier. The city assumed direct management of the marina in August 2024 after the previous operator’s contract ended and decided the area needs a rebuild rather than costly repairs. The city said in a statement this week that the marina has been a financial challenge and subsidizing it is no longer sustainable. “Our city’s marina is a vital community asset that has faced decades of infrastructure deterioration and increasing financial strain on the city,” Mayor Brianne Zorn said in a statement. “An investment in Martinez by a private developer may offer a transformational opportunity to fund a comprehensive plan for our marina and waterfront.” The marina includes 332 boat slips, a park, open space and a few marine-related businesses. After Wednesday’s presentation, the council and the community will have the opportunity to discuss the plan.
The council can authorize the city to enter into exclusive negotiations with Tucker Sadler on Wednesday, which would enable the parties to develop an agreement on terms. The city said if the council agrees to begin negotiations Wednesday, the plan would come back for community comment in the fall. The Martinez City Council meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Martinez City Hall, 525 E. Henrietta St. in Martinez. To watch or participate on Zoom, go to www.cityofmartinez.org/meetings.

Gotta make it all nice so the bums can destroy it with tents and litter.Great plan. They should take a giant spoon and scoop all of Martinez out in the water and just start over.
I find Martinez charming and prefer to visit their downtown over the craziness that is downtown Walnut Creek. That said, I rarely visit the marina. It is old, run down, and unless you are a boater, it doesn’t have much to offer. It’s also very disconnected from the downtown. Hopefully they come up with a good plan that will give people a reason to visit the marina and connect with the water and shoreline.
Maybe a “Jack London Square” approach – boats, trains, shopping and dining, all in one location?
Sounds good to me.
Yes, probably not many people visit the “marina” part of the waterfront. Of course there is much more there including sports facilities and fields, amphitheater and the city park. Along with that there is the regional park too. Quite a bit of possibilities there which has been squabbling over for years. And don’t forget the train tracks kind messes with access at times.
I get where you are coming from. Downtown Walnut Creek has all the culture and charm of Orange County.
That said, the Martinez Marina area is going to take a serious effort to clean up let alone revitalize. Hopefully their plan includes adding attractions and activities that will draw visitors. That’s the only way to take care of the money problem. Plus it has to be safe, and that may be the biggest challenge.
People that live here dont really understand that when something has all the charm of Orange county, that is not a compliment.I found it impossible to live there. You are either very wealthy,or you live somewhere awful. The middle class has gone missing.I lived there 14 years and couldn’t take another minute.
What I learned living and driving in Walnut Creek was the person with the most expensive car has the right-of-way. 😄
I hope it works out – plans are always great – but is it funded?
This is a necessary Negotiation.
The first thing that needs doing is strictly enforce loitering and vagrancy laws!
Get the druggies and drunkards the hell out of there and keep them out.
No parking after 9 pm without a marina resident window tag.
Take charge!
And dredge the marina so that the boats float instead of listing to one side stuck in the mud at low tide!
It looks like hell when that happens.
Then begin rebuilding it into a new marina.
