Trash continues to pile up in Bay Area municipalities served by Republic Services, a waste management company that saw many of its workers go on strike around the nation last week. The strikes began on July 8 amidst ongoing national contract negotiations between the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union and Republic Services, the second-largest waste management company in the U.S. Regionally, the strikes began due to contract negotiations between the company and Teamsters members working at Forward Landfill in Manteca, according to the Republic Services website. Teamsters members have since expanded picketing locations to include Republic Services facilities at Ox Mountain Landfill in Half Moon Bay and Newby Island Resource Recovery Park in Milpitas. The facilities remain operational with longer entry wait times. Teamsters represents around 8,000 of Republic Services’ 42,000 employees. Many Republic Services employees in the Bay Area are refusing to cross picket lines, Republic Services shared on its website. “We respect the rights of our employees to engage in collective bargaining and are committed to meeting the service needs of our customers,” the company said. The company has mobilized additional employees from other areas to assist with waste collections and is prioritizing waste collection over yard waste and recycling. Waste pickup continues at essential businesses, including hospitals, nursing homes and apartment complexes.

Get back to work you lazy bastards.. if you are concerned about the pay then pick a different profession. It pays what it pays so if you don’t like it then pick differently.
Residents will just dump it along quiet streets at night.
I’m curious to see if we’ll be able to get refunds if our trash isn’t picked up for weeks. I don’t want to be paying for a service that is not being offered. Luckily the trash in my neighborhood got picked up a few days ago. My yard waste and recycling bins are completely packed full at this point though.
I used to work at a place where the dumpster was NEVER full…. barely got 1/2 way full before pickup day, ever. I got in the habit of bringing my garbage 5 days a week and cancelled my home service. Within a few weeks I was getting notices saying I had to have garbage service! They were threatening some kind of action if I didn’t start paying for garbage service that I didn’t need! What a racket!
Thank goodness the City of Concord avoided this problem by giving no-compete contracts to the local family-owned Italian business!
