Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday declared a state of emergency for seven Northern California counties after a series of atmospheric river storms earlier this year caused widespread damage, including flooding, landslides, and road closures. The declaration covers Sonoma, Mendocino, Modoc, Napa, Shasta, and Trinity counties, which were hit hard by the so-called “2025 February Storms” between Jan. 31 and Feb. 17. “These 2025 February Storms resulted in excessive rainfall, landslides, and widespread flooding affecting roads and waterways,” Newsom said in the emergency declaration signed Tuesday. “I find that conditions of extreme peril to the safety of persons and property exist.” The governor cited Government Code section 8558(b), stating that the magnitude of the damage is “likely to be beyond the control of the services, personnel, equipment, and facilities of any single local government” and requires regional mutual aid. He also found that “local authority is inadequate to cope with the magnitude of the extreme peril.” Newsom ordered state agencies to assist with response efforts and calls for the use of state resources under the coordination of the Office of Emergency Services. It also authorizes Caltrans to seek immediate federal highway aid, and suspends certain restrictions from the state’s price gouging law. The Cal OES is also instructed to provide financial assistance to Modoc, Shasta, and Trinity counties under the California Disaster Assistance Act. Northern California endured major impacts during the February storms, with rainfall totals ranging from 1 to 3 inches, and North Bay areas receiving as much as 4 inches, according to the National Weather Service. In Sonoma County alone, two fatalities were reported within 24 hours as floodwaters surged. Many communities saw evacuations, and major highways such as U.S. Highway 101 and Interstate Highway 5 were temporarily closed due to flooding. Throughout Napa County, the atmospheric river dumped heavy rain and caused flooding, landslides, fallen trees and damaged roads and bridges. Mendocino County residents also faced widespread disruptions during the atmospheric river event. Heavy rainfall and saturated soils contributed to landslides and flooding along key roadways, leading Caltrans to close sections of Highway 101, state Highway 128, and Highway 175.
How fortunate for those affected, he was able to take time away from his
2026 campaigning.
Funny how Trump’s never mentioned about the same issue 🤔
Maybe because he actually went to LA on January 24th to see for himself what the fires had done, and to assess what was needed. duhhhh
… He inspected areas of Northern California fires on November 17, 2018, when he toured areas devastated by the Camp Fire.
He also visited California on September 14, 2020, to survey the damage from wildfires and receive a briefing in Sacramento.
The NEXT four years belonged to the Socialist Democrats…. Ya
know?
Aren’t you a little late here? I am sure those effected could have used that support a long time ago.
Just guessing here but it may be that those areas were dealing with these issues on the county level and are just over their heads now. Newsome was also dealing with the L.A. fires at that time. The state has still not gotten any relief from Trump for those fires! Newsome is probably just issuing the State of Emergency for the No. Cal. issues now because he hasn’t gotten help from the Federal government and this will open up funds for the No.Cal. areas that need the help.
I am quite sure it has nothing to do with his campaigning.
Is this sarcasm? Over their heads????? “That is their f#^king job” Boo-hoo…you have to work, that is what you get that huge paycheck for. no sympathy
Not aloud to post emojis anymore… but that’s ok because there is no emoji for LMFAO anyway!
…allowed…. eyeroll 😉
Newsom has spent zero energy dealing with the fires with one exception:
Making sure the $100M raised from the benefit concerts was funneled to his 38 favorite NGO’s rather than to the fire victims.
Money Laundering yet again.
Why, Gavin was very busy! He was going around the country bashing president Trump selling himself for the next presidential election. Now we guess he comes back to show some concern cuz he knows his lack of concern will hurt him if he tries to run for president. That man and his supporters are living in a bubble. The rest of the country does not want what Gavin Newsom has done to California! He wants to Californicate the nation.
The guy’s a flippin’ blivet!
He’s too busy with his podcast.
These are heavily conservative areas. Why now? Color me suspicious – this “storm event” was six months ago…
Garvin was probably waiting until after his hair stylist appointment.
